Issues connecting to Box and other websites Friday Oct 21st
Beginning early this morning, there has been a widespread denial of service attack against one of the Internet domain name providers. This attack has been affecting many sites and services on the east coast and throughout the US. We have noticed services being disrupted or unavailable to many sites including Box.com, Twitter, Spotify, Paypal, Netflix, CNN and various others.
The company is working to get access to these and other affected sites restored as quickly as possible. I've included an excerpt from the company, DYN, that is being attacked.

Brian V. Jones photographs, Special Collections highlight
Street Scenes & African American Churches of the D.C. area
The Special Collections at the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is very pleased to announce that our
Brian V. Jones photographs have been described and the
finding aid* is now available online!
Brian V. Jones is a local documentary style photographer, born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1952. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Howard University and a Master’s degree from Illinois Institute of Technology. He has been a professor of photography since the late 1980s and his photographs are in the collections of the National Museum of American Art, the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, Colgate University, and in numerous private collections. Since 1980, he has focused on diverse large scale projects. He currently serves as Professor of Photography and Coordinator of the Media Arts & Technologies Dept. at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD.
This collection consists of 165 gelatin silver prints (black-and-white) and chromogenic color prints by photographer Brian V. Jones and is comprised of three series**: Series I: Street Scenes; Series II: African American Churches in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., 1981-1989; and Series III: Connecticut Avenue Series. The Brian V. Jones photographs have also been added to our
Researching African-American Photographers research guide.

Below is a sampling from this collection:
From Series I we have Crowd at DuPont Circle fountain (Box 1, item P2010-25-019) and Park benches and bird on water fountain (Box 8, item P2010-25-155).
From Series II there is Shiloh Baptist Church (Box 2, item P2010-25-040) and St. Paul’s Community Church (P2010-25-047).
From Series III we have Anchorage (Box 6, item P2010-25-126) and Saw Player (Box7, item P2010-25-140)
There are currently plans underway to digitize the entire collection. Any students interested in interning on this project should contact
Special Collections.
* A finding aid is a description of materials that assists users to gain access to and understand the materials. They provide context about the collection and consolidate information about the collection, often including administrative history or biographical note of the creator; scope of the collection, including size, subjects, media; organization and arrangement; and a container list with box, folder, and sometimes item listing.
** A series is a mid-level organizational concept used by archivists to organize a collection. In general, items in archives, and here in Special Collections, are organized by collection, series, box, folder, and finally item. However, this is highly dependent upon the size of a collection; some collections consist of a single box, others span many boxes such as the Brian V. Jones photographs which are housed in 8 boxes (and take up 10.25 linear feet!). Linear feet is a measurement used by archives to estimate the amount of space a collection will take up, the Brian V. Graduate Student Writing for Professional Development
PROMISE
will be hosting their annual graduate writing seminar, sponsored by GSA and
PROMISE AGEP! Their guest speakers will discuss writing topics for professional
development. Susan Hindle, Assistant Director of Internships and Employment at
the Career Center, will be talking about writing to acquire employment -
personal statements, cover letters, resume. Susan will also likely touch on
other resources available through the career center. Dr. Kevin Omland,
Professor in the Biological Sciences Department, will discuss writing for
publications: how to choose journals to submit to, how to evaluate
those journals to curtail one's own writing, how to improve one's chances at
finally acquiring publication. Dr. Christine Mallinson will touch on
topics like writing for Theses, Dissertations and other
academia-facing projects. Please come to listen to seminars on writing for

Lunch and Learn With Request Tracker Features Huge Turnout
Users group learns of new features and effective practices
In early October, the Request Tracker (RT) users group met in the
newly renovated Engineering Room 023 for an informative session on RT’s upcoming features and overall integration within UMBC. Over 35 people from various departments attended the lunch and learn and an effective practices interactive panel provided key insight into RT’s best uses.
Starting off the session, Joe Kirby, Assistant VP of DoIT, gave a brief overview of upcoming features for RT version 4.4. The new version will offer selectable multiple files, drag and drop attachments, and inline previews for certain file types like images. For a complete list of upcoming changes, check out the

Andrea Mocko then gave a presentation on campus use of RT based on the FY 16 User Support. In short, the department of Academic Affairs has the highest use of RT by division and the top referring sites and the volume of TSC phone calls has gone down significantly. The panel then went through what it was like implementing RT into their respective departments, starting with what the initial problem was before implementing RT.
Jackson described life before RT as challenging and the inability to keep track of everything was not ideal with their goal of providing excellent customer service. “There would be people stopping at the desk for on the cuff technical support.” said Jackson.

Shahid had similar problems to Jackson. Schreihofer ran into workflow problems, and wanted to be consistent and automated every time when responding to a ticket. Thompson had no central way of receiving or tracking incoming tickets.
These were all major issues the panelists described, until they remedied it by implementing RT into their departments.
RT will be 8 years old on February 23, 2017. Kirby said “I have realized over the years it was not me getting [users] to buy in, but rather [users] sharing their needs and willingness to work with us.”
“RT does all the heavy lifting, and gets it done.”
You can see this type of collaboration with all of the panelists who attended the lunch and learn. Each one of them found ways to integrate RT into their department, and customize it to suit their needs.
Schreihofer for example looked into canned responses for web forms, which would then go on to be implemented in the Technology Support Center (TSC). “RT does all the heavy lifting, and gets it done.” said Schreihofer
“Other universities point to what we have and say ‘I want that’”
Thompson implemented RT as a way to replace paper processes within his department as well as improving workflow within the OGC. You can check out more about
Thompson’s implementations here. After implementing RT, Thompson says he gets several questions from institutions outside of UMBC. “Other Universities point to what we have and say ‘I want that’” said Thompson.
One of Kirby’s favorite quotes that describes RT and implementing it at UMBC comes from computer scientist and
Navy Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, who said “The most dangerous phrase in our language is ‘We’ve always done it that way.’”

Laptop Loans Location Has Moved Within AOK Library & Gallery
Available at Circulation desk on 1st floor of AOK
With support from DoIT in
Fall 2015, the AOK Library & Gallery expanded its equipment loan program to include laptops. The location to request these laptops has moved to the 1st floor Circulation desk. Any UMBC faculty, staff, and students with a current UMBC ID may borrow the laptops.
For this semester, DoIT has expanded the program to include twice number of available laptops at checkout. There is a choice of requesting a Macbook Pro or a Dell Latitude. Included with the laptops are their respective chargers and carrying bag.
Mac and Dell laptops that are available to borrow and their listed specs.
It’s important to note that the laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis and may be checked out until the library closes the next day. You can find more information regarding the laptop loan

RLC/Gallery remain closed following Library water leak
Writing Center/Math Lab to reopen Weds Oct 5
UPDATE: The Writing Center and Math Lab will reopen on Weds Oct 5 in the Library.
The RLC and Library Gallery will remain closed today due to a water leak on Sunday night. The Writing Center is operating from Sherman Hall room 354. The Math Lab is operating in the Library, near the Print/Copy station on the 1st floor. All other Library services are open and operating normally.
