<Title>Latest grants from the Hrabowski Fund for Innovation</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><table border="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><div><div><span>UMBC is proud to announce the projects selected to receive grants in the fall 2016 round of the</span><span> </span><em>Hrabowski Fund for Innovation</em><span> </span><span>competition.</span></div><div><div><br><span><strong>ADAPTATION AWARD</strong></span></div><div><br></div><div><span><strong>Intercultural Tales: Learning With Baltimore's Immigrant Communities</strong> – Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication assistant professors Tania Lizarazo and Thania Munoz Diaz will promote one-on-one collaboration between UMBC students and members of immigrant communities in Baltimore using digital stories. The goal of the project is to enhance the communication and cultural competence of students, while elevating the visibility of immigrant populations in the region and highlighting the positive contributions they make as members in their communities.</span></div><div><br></div><div><span><strong>SEED GRANT</strong></span></div><div><br></div><div><span><strong>From Service to Study: Creating a Better Environment for UMBC's Student Veterans</strong> – Meredith Oyen, Associate Professor of History and Asian Studies, will lead a team to address the unique needs of students transitioning from military service to college life. This work will involve developing interdisciplinary programs to educate faculty, staff, and students on how to assist veterans as they enroll in classes, seek out advising, and adjust to campus life. Specifically, the project will create a complementary new oral history course that captures student veteran experiences to be shared with the broader community. The project also includes "Green Zone Training," which will create a visible network of faculty and staff on campus who are aware of veteran issues and qualified to offer assistance, if needed.</span></div><div><br></div></div><div><span>Winners from the spring 2017 submission will be notified in early May. Proposals for the next round of Innovation Fund grants are due by <span><span>October 20, 2017</span></span>. <Title>Stanley B. Burns, M.D. Donates Collection to UMBC</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Stanley B. Burns, M.D., historian, collector, and physician, recently donated a part of his daguerreotype collection to the Photography Collections of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).  The gift of 252 <a href="http://graphicsatlas.org/identification/?process_id=366" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">daguerreotypes</a> continues Dr. Burns’ long relationship with UMBC.</div><div><br></div><div>As an historian, Dr. Burns has written over 1,100 articles and over forty books on subjects ranging from Victorian funeral portraits to early oncology.  His books <em>Sleeping Beauty: Memorial Photography In America</em>, and <em>Forgotten Marriage:  The Painted Tintype &amp; The Decorative Frame, 1860-1910</em>, <em>A Lost Chapter in American Portraiture</em> both received American Photographic Historical Society awards for best publications.</div><div><br></div><div>Among the donated works are both signed and unsigned daguerreotypes, that is, ones for which the photographer is identified and ones for which the photographer is anonymous.  The anonymous ones are valued for the uniqueness of the imagery, the interesting representations of nineteenth century people, and the material culture characteristics.  The identified ones are valued for these same qualities as well as having information about the photographers.  More than seventy different photographers are represented among the signed works, including daguerreotypists such as Charles Deforest Fredericks, Rufus Anson, John Plumbe, Jr., Samuel Broadbent, and Jessie Whitehurst.</div><div><br></div><div>The gift substantially increases the holdings of daguerreotypes at UMBC.</div><div><br></div><div><img src="http://library.umbc.edu/speccoll/img/Thumb-J.H.%20Young.jpg" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></div><div><br></div><div>Visit <a href="http://library.umbc.edu/speccoll/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Special Collections</a> to see our growing collection of daguerreotypes.</div><div><br></div></div>

<Title>Information about myUMBC outage on Monday February 20th</Title>

    <div class="html-content">This morning around 9:10am we experienced a failure of several disk arrays on our central storage system. The arrays that failed affected several critical systems, including myUMBC and parts of the webmail environment. Service was restored to myUMBC around 10:30. There were some lingering issues affecting certain webmail users that were not resolved until 11:45. <div><br></div><div>We are working to investigate exactly why this failure resulted in the type of outage it did and how we can prevent this type of outage in the future.</div><div><br></div><div>If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me for additional information. </div><div><br></div><div>Damian Doyle</div><div>Senior Director of Enterprise Infrastructure</div><div>DoIT - UMBC</div></div>

<Title>Open Access at UMBC</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span>UMBC understands the importance of sharing research and scholarship to create a more educated, knowledgeable society in the state, the nation, and throughout the world. By supporting the open dissemination of the work of our colleagues, the institution embraces greater recognition of the expertise and advancement in the disciplines by our faculty, and it precipitates a more thorough review, consideration, and critique of their scholarly work.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>After careful consideration, the university, with guidance from the Faculty Senate, has established an official <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/jlysl/nwtbnbb/rbsz5c" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Academic Open Access Resolution</a> in an effort to support and encourage faculty and staff across the campus to openly share their work through repositories and venues that endorse open access and collaboration.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>This announcement comes at a time when support for open access journal publication is growing. Most recently, the University System of Maryland Council of University System Faculty passed a similar resolution.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>As always, faculty members are welcome to continue to publish their work wherever they are most comfortable, including national journals.     <div class="html-content"><table border="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><div><div><span>Dear members of the campus community,</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>It is with tremendous sadness that we share with the campus community the passing of UMBC alumna and former assistant director in the Office for Academic and Pre-professional Advising Paula Ashby ‘76, psychology, an exceptional friend, family member, and colleague who dedicated her life to academic advising and student success.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Ms. Ashby began her journey in academic advising as a student assistant in the Learning Resources Center during her junior year at UMBC in 1974. After completing her undergraduate degree, she returned to UMBC several years later as a professional academic advisor in the former Allied Health Advisement Center. Ms. Ashby’s gift for advising enabled her to serve in an exemplary fashion as Graduate and Professional School Coordinator, where she supported the Meyerhoff Scholarship Program for nearly a decade, from its inception in 1989 until 1997. <span><span>One year later</span></span> she assumed the role of assistant director in the Office for Academic and Pre-professional Advising, where she remained until her retirement in 2016</span>.</div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Over her 36-year career, Ms. Ashby has counseled and mentored thousands of students across UMBC's undergraduate advising system, and her impact on the foundation of professional academic advising at the university is significant and laudable. She steadfastly and nobly served as an academic advisor, student advocate, heath professions expert, and new student orientation guru. She will be remembered as an academic advising pioneer who has made enormous contributions to launching and fostering the careers of countless health care professionals throughout the region, state, country, and beyond.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Viewing services for Ms. Ashby will take place on <span><span>Friday, February 17, 2017</span></span>, <span><span>5-8 p.m.</span></span> at Wylie Funeral Home, 9200 Liberty Road, Randallstown, MD, 21133. A wake will be held on <span><span>Saturday, February 18, 10:30 a.m.</span></span>, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 3317 Saint Lukes Lane, Baltimore, MD, 21207. Members of the campus community are invited to join family and friends for a Celebration of Life Service at the Epworth United Methodist Church immediately following the wake.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Contributions to the Paula O.
