<Title>Summer 2017 Classroom Technology Upgrades</Title>
<Tagline>11 Rooms in three months!</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div>During the summer of 2017, DoIT AV Services upgraded eleven classrooms and meeting rooms across campus.  Funding for these room renovations was provided by CNMS, The Commons, and DoIT.  The full list of the rooms upgraded is below.</div><div><br></div><div>Some of the highlights of these upgrades are as follows:</div><div><ul><li>80" monitors on stands with Mersive Solstice wireless collaboration devices in two Commons meeting rooms</li><li>Improved audio, projection, and sight-lines in two Public Policy and two Sondheim classrooms</li><li>Improved audio and projection in three Sherman Hall a one Meyerhoff room </li></ul><div>In addition to these highlights, the CASTLE was completely renovated from a AV technology standpoint.  The "new" CASTLE features eight larger displays, improved room audio, wireless collaboration, and new instructor controls that allow the instructor to display content or multiple sources of content on one or many displays all through the use of a touch-panel screen.</div></div><div><br></div><div>All of this work (design, installation, configuration, and training) was done in-house by AV Services.  Special kudos to Danielle Brown and Jack Malone. </div><div><br></div><div>List of rooms upgraded:</div><div><ul><li>CASTLE</li><li>Commons 327 and 328</li><li>Meyerhoff 256</li><li>Public Policy 206 and 208</li><li>Sherman Hall 013, 014, 015</li><li>Sondheim 103 and 105</li></ul></div></div>

<Title>Quarterly system patching on 8/18 &amp; 8/19</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Friday August 18th and Saturday August 19th.  While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are several systems which require the downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.</span><div><span><br></span></div><div><div>Friday, 8/18/2017 between 5pm and 9pm <span>(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):</span><span> </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><ul><li>The web hosting environments (virthost and jabba) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)</li><li>Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)<br></li><ul><li>All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched</li><li>Expected to be unreachable from 5pm to 7pm</li></ul><li>All HFS (user) servers will be offline</li><li>License5 will be down (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)</li></ul><div>Saturday, 8/19/2017 between 9am and 11am<span>(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time)</span><span>:</span></div><div><ul><li>myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality</li><li>Wiki will be unavailable</li><li>The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable</li></ul><div>Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions.<br><br>Thanks.<br>Tim Champ</div></div><div>Manager of Unix Infrastructure</div><div>UMBC DoIT</div></div></div></div>

<Title>Commons Roof Maintenance Project</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span>Commons Roof Maintenance Project</span><br></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Starting early this week, crews will begin replacing portions of the Commons Building roof. The repair work is estimated to be completed by the beginning of November, 2017.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Contractors will access the building from the Commons Circle, which will temporarily impact several pedestrian paths around the Commons Building. Please follow appropriate signage for alternate routes around the construction area. On behalf of the UMBC community, we offer our prayers and our deepest condolences to the families and communities of those directly affected by these appalling acts of terror and intimidation.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>We strongly condemn the racist, hate-filled ideology used by white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups to attack and instill fear in our fellow citizens. This is a time for our leaders and for each of us to speak out against racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, discrimination against our LGBTQ and immigrant communities, religious intolerance, and bigotry of any kind. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>While respecting the Constitutional rights to free speech and assembly, we have a moral responsibility to safeguard these freedoms from abusive inflammatory rhetoric and acts of hate, intimidation, and violence.  </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Our University community is dedicated to open inquiry and by welcoming minds from all backgrounds and perspectives we know that our diversity is our strength. <Title>LDAP-Master and Webadmin downtime on 8/17 at 2pm</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>On Thursday, August 17th starting at 2pm LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance.  During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable.  Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.  </span><div><br></div><div>The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates.  The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Thursday, August 17th.<div><br></div><div>During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.</div></div></div>

<Title>AOK Library closing early Friday, August 11</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Facilities Management has engaged an electrical contractor to 
    repair the transformer that feeds the AOK Library &amp; Gallery 
    building.  To undertake the repair, all power to the building will be 
    shut off.</div><div><br>Because the power is going off at <span><span>5:00 pm</span></span> on Friday, August  11th, we are closing the library at <span><span>4:00 pm</span></span>.  All staff and patrons should be out of the building by <span><span>4:00 pm</span></span> on Friday the 11th.<br><br></div><div>The RLC will also close at 4:00 pm due to lack of power.  We anticipate that the RLC will be available again at <span><span>8am</span></span> <span><span>on Saturday the 12th.</span></span></div></div>
