We seek an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented individual to work as subject librarian in the humanities and to provide general reference assistance to the UMBC community. The successful candidate is expected to provide a wide range of reference, instructional, and outreach services to students, faculty, and staff. This position will work closely with the Instruction Coordinator to design and deliver library curriculum and instruction activities for first-year courses, including English 100 and Introduction to an Honors University seminars. RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position serves as subject librarian to a number of academic departments in the humanities. Duties include providing library instruction, outreach, collection development, and research support to students, faculty and staff. As part of a department of six faculty librarians and one support staff, this position provides general reference service to the campus community (including shared evening and weekend hours) and participates in the planning and implementation of departmental operations. As an instruction librarian, this position designs and delivers library curriculum and instruction activities and contributes to the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Library’s information literacy and instructional program.

REQUIREMENTS:

SALARY AND BENEFITS: 
Position is a ¾ time (30 hours/week), 12-month library faculty appointment at anticipated rank of Librarian I. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Minimum salary $35,000. The annual Open Enrollment period for faculty and staff health benefits ends onNovember 15. Employees who need to make changes to their health benefits OR those who wish to enroll or keep their Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for 2018 should take action now. If there are no changes in coverage, current elections will roll over into the 2018 plan year and no action is required.

As a reminder, we are hosting a second information session in UC 312 from 12 – 1 p.m.on Monday, November 13.

Important Updates:
  • Healthcare FSA Limit Increase: IRS has recently increased the maximum annual election for the Healthcare Flexible Spending to $2,650 (from $2,600) for 2018. The maximum biweekly amount will now be $110.41. Please note:employees currently enrolled in an FSA must re-enroll by calling the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system at 410-669-3893 prior to November 15 in order to keep coverage for 2018.
  • New Prescription Cards: CVS Caremark will replace Express Scripts effective January 1, 2018. Employees currently enrolled in prescription drug coverage will automatically be enrolled with Caremark and will receive new cards prior to the new year. Please use the pharmacy locator tool on the CVS Caremark website to check your pharmacy to see if it participates in the CVS Caremark network.
  • Don’t forget to complete your State Wellness Program activities to get free copays to your Primary Doctor and reduced copays to specialist.

Many of our colleagues travel frequently.  Donating hotel toiletries is a great way to help our students.

Responsibilities:     
The incumbent will be responsible for general maintenance of the print serials collection, assisting with planning and implementation of shifts.  Using various library automated systems, the incumbent will perform searches to help identify items for deselection. The incumbent is expected to assist users, shelve, maintain all equipment as well as perform other duties as assigned.  This position reports to the Chief Serials Technician.

Required Minimum Qualifications:     
Requires a High School Diploma or GED; Library or clerical experience desirable.

Preferred Qualifications:      
Must have good organization and communication skills; detail oriented, self-motivated, flexible; demonstrate the ability to work independently; proficient with word processing applications. Familiarity with Excel spreadsheets would be preferable.  This position requires physical labor—lifting and pushing loaded book trucks.

Dear Members of the UMBC Community, 

I write with regret to inform our community of the sad news that our dear friend and colleague Lu Caldwell, administrative assistant in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017.

Ms. Caldwell came to UMBC from the Maryland Higher Education Commission in 1998. In her 19 years with UMBC, she served the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships in many capacities. She was office manager and provided administrative support to the office’s director, as well as to the office’s merit scholarships unit. She also assisted in the processing of need-based aid documentation. Ms. Caldwell touched many lives during her 42 years of service to the State of Maryland, and we are thankful to have had the opportunity to work with such a kind, passionate, and dedicated colleague.

A viewing service for Ms. Caldwell will take place on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at March Funeral Homes - West Baltimore, 4300 Wabash Ave., Baltimore, MD, 21215. Visitation begins at 2 p.m., followed by a service at 2:30 p.m.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at UMBC is an on-campus organization providing free financial services for the Baltimore community. 

Our students get professionally certified as tax preparers and financial navigators before volunteering with clients once a week, on campus, from February to April. VITA volunteers provide clients, usually students people with low income, with free tax preparation services and basic financial education. 

No experience is necessary to volunteer with VITA, and training is free.

To volunteer during this upcoming Spring tax season just attend a Fall information session, where you will learn more about the program and the volunteering process. If you have any questions just email Vita@umbc.edu.
