The successful candidate is expected to provide a wide range of reference, instructional, and outreach services to students, faculty, and staff. This position will work closely with the Instruction Coordinator to design and deliver library curriculum and instruction activities for first-year courses, including English 100 and Introduction to an Honors University seminars. Review of applications will begin on December 15, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled.<br><br><strong>RESPONSIBILITIES:</strong><br>This position serves as subject librarian to a number of academic departments in the humanities. Duties include providing library instruction, outreach, collection development, and research support to students, faculty and staff. As part of a department of six faculty librarians and one support staff, this position provides general reference service to the campus community (including shared evening and weekend hours) and participates in the planning and implementation of departmental operations. As an instruction librarian, this position designs and delivers library curriculum and instruction activities and contributes to the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Library’s information literacy and instructional program.<br><br><strong>REQUIREMENTS:</strong><br><ul><li>    Master of Library &amp; Information Science degree (or equivalent ALA accredited degree)</li><li>    Demonstrated ability and interest in providing dynamic library instruction and contributing to a team-based information literacy program</li><li>    Demonstrated ability and interest in the areas of library public services and outreach</li><li>    Demonstrated high-quality written and verbal communication</li><li>    Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team</li><li>    Ability to initiate and lead projects to completion</li><li>    Interest and/or experience working with diverse populations, particularly students</li><li>    Undergraduate or advanced degree in a humanities discipline preferred</li><li>    Reference experience in an academic library setting preferred</li><li>    Direct teaching or library instruction experience preferred</li></ul><br><strong>SALARY AND BENEFITS:  </strong><br>Position is a ¾ time (30 hours/week), 12-month library faculty appointment at anticipated rank of Librarian I. <Title>Reminder: Open Enrollment Ends November 15</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span>The annual <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/77nmv/nwtbnbb/z58uzf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Open Enrollment</a> period for faculty and staff health benefits ends on<span><span>November 15</span></span>. Employees who need to make changes to their health benefits OR those who wish to enroll or keep their Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for 2018 should <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/77nmv/nwtbnbb/fy9uzf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">take action now</a>. If there are no changes in coverage, current elections will roll over into the 2018 plan year and no action is required.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>As a reminder, we are hosting a second <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/77nmv/nwtbnbb/vqavzf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">information session</a> in UC 312 from <span><span>12 – 1 p.m.</span></span>on <span><span>Monday, November 13</span></span>.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong>Important Updates:</strong></span></div><div><ul><li><span><a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/77nmv/nwtbnbb/bjbvzf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Healthcare FSA Limit Increase</strong></a>: IRS has recently increased the maximum annual election for the Healthcare Flexible Spending to $2,650 (from $2,600) for 2018. The maximum biweekly amount will now be $110.41. Please note:<strong>employees currently enrolled in an FSA must re-enroll by calling the </strong><strong>Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system</strong> at <a rel="nofollow external" class="bo">410-669-3893</a> prior to <span><span>November 15</span></span> in order to keep coverage for 2018.</span></li><li><span><strong>New Prescription Cards</strong>: CVS Caremark will replace Express Scripts effective <span><span>January 1, 2018</span></span>. Employees currently enrolled in prescription drug coverage will automatically be enrolled with Caremark and will receive new cards prior to the new year.     <div class="html-content">to donate to Retriever Essentials.  Not only do we provide bags of free, non-perishable foods to students facing food insufficiency, we also provide toiletries.<br><br>Right now we are low on soap, toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, etc.<br><br>Many of our colleagues travel frequently.  Donating hotel toiletries is a great way to help our students.<br><br>We are also in need of single serving pop top type foods as we have at least one student living in their car.<br><br>Thanks for passing the word and encouraging others to join Retriever Essentials.<br></div>

    <div class="html-content"><strong>Job no:</strong> 492566<br><strong>Work type:</strong> Temporary/Contingent I<br><strong>Location:</strong> UMBC Campus<br><strong>Categories:</strong> Library<br><br><strong>Responsibilities:</strong>     <br>The incumbent will be responsible for general maintenance of the print serials collection, assisting with planning and implementation of shifts.  Using various library automated systems, the incumbent will perform searches to help identify items for deselection. The incumbent is expected to assist users, shelve, maintain all equipment as well as perform other duties as assigned.  This position reports to the Chief Serials Technician.<br><br><strong>Required Minimum Qualifications: </strong>    <br>Requires a High School Diploma or GED; Library or clerical experience desirable.<br><br><strong>Preferred Qualifications:</strong>      <br>Must have good organization and communication skills; detail oriented, self-motivated, flexible; demonstrate the ability to work independently; proficient with word processing applications. Familiarity with Excel spreadsheets would be preferable.  This position requires physical labor—lifting and pushing loaded book trucks.<br><br><strong>Background Screening Statement: </strong>    <br>A background check may be required.  <br><br><strong>Screening of Applications Begins:</strong><br>For best consideration, submit application by November 10, 2017 (resumes will be accepted until position is filled).<br><br><strong>Salary:</strong> $16.10 per hour, 30-40 hours per week<br><br><strong>Hours:</strong> M-F 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. subject to change depending on the needs of the Library.<br><br><strong>Additional Information:</strong> This is a temporary position.  Initial contract is for (6-Months) with the possibility of renewal. <br><br><strong>FLSA Status:</strong> Nonexempt <br><br><strong>Equal Opportunity Statement: </strong><br>UMBC is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. <Title>Sad news for the UMBC community</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Dear Members of the UMBC Community, </div><div><br></div><div>I write with regret to inform our community of the sad news that our dear friend and colleague <a href="http://www.marchfh.com/obituaries/Lula-Caldwell/#!/Obituary" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Lu Caldwell</a>, administrative assistant in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017.</div><div><br></div><div>Ms. Caldwell came to UMBC from the Maryland Higher Education Commission in 1998. In her 19 years with UMBC, she served the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships in many capacities. She was office manager and provided administrative support to the office’s director, as well as to the office’s merit scholarships unit. She also assisted in the processing of need-based aid documentation. Ms. Caldwell touched many lives during her 42 years of service to the State of Maryland, and we are thankful to have had the opportunity to work with such a kind, passionate, and dedicated colleague.</div><div><br></div><div>A viewing service for Ms. Caldwell will take place on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at March Funeral Homes - West Baltimore, 4300 Wabash Ave., Baltimore, MD, 21215.     <div class="html-content"><div>The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at UMBC is an on-campus organization providing free financial services for the Baltimore community. </div><div><br></div><div>Our students get professionally certified as tax preparers and financial navigators before volunteering with clients once a week, on campus, from February to April. <span>VITA volunteers provide clients, usually students people with low income, with free tax preparation services and basic financial education. </span></div><span><div><br></div><div>No experience is necessary to volunteer with VITA, and training is free.</div><div><br></div></span><div>To volunteer during this upcoming Spring tax season just attend a Fall information session, where you will learn more about the program and the volunteering process. <span>If you have any questions just email <a href="mailto:Vita@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Vita@umbc.edu</a>.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Info Session Dates:</span></div><div><ul><li>November 9th, 12:00pm in Commons 332</li><li>November 13th, 7:00pm in Commons 327</li><li>November 20th, 4:00pm in Commons 328</li></ul></div></div>
