<Title>2018 Rhodes Scholar Naomi Mburu</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span>Dear Members of the UMBC Community,</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>We are delighted to announce that Naomi Mburu, a member of the class of 2018, has been awarded the <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/zl1vv/nwtbnbb/7vev2f" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Rhodes Scholarship</a>. Naomi is a Meyerhoff Scholar (M26) and is pursuing a major in chemical engineering and a minor in physics. She is one of thirty-two students selected from 866 applicants from across the nation to receive the Rhodes Scholarship this year. Naomi is the first UMBC student in the history of the campus to receive this prestigious honor. Upon graduation, Naomi will pursue a Ph.D. in engineering science at the University of Oxford. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Naomi’s achievement is truly a UMBC community success story. Naomi’s parents Joseph and Joyce Mburu, a UMBC employee in the financial services department, have been dedicated to her success throughout her academic years. We would also like to acknowledge all in the UMBC community who supported Naomi on her path towards the Rhodes, from faculty in biological sciences who supported Naomi’s research when she was a student at Mount Hebron High School, to the departments in the College of Engineering and Information Technology that have helped Naomi excel. UMBC faculty and staff in both the Honors College and the Meyerhoff Scholars Program have also played an important role in Naomi’s success during her collegiate career, including guidance through the rigorous Rhodes application process.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Additional information about Naomi’s involvement in research and leadership in many organizations is highlighted in <em><a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/zl1vv/nwtbnbb/nofv2f" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The Baltimore Sun</a></em>. <Title>Update on ILSB Construction Project - November 2017</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we continue work on the <a href="https://t.e2ma.net/click/zpguv/nwtbnbb/3cpb2f" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building</a>, an important construction project to expand our life sciences programs and teaching facilities and to support interdisciplinary research.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Commons Drop-off Area</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Construction of the new drop-off circle and pedestrian pathways has completed. We encourage vehicles use the new drop-off circle between the Physics building and the Commons Garage.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Commons Circle Construction</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Beginning this weekend and continuing through March 2018, construction will begin on the north side of the Commons Circle, as crews work to update walkways, lighting, plantings, and landscaping. This includes the removal of vegetation near the Physics building, which will be restored at the conclusion of this work. A temporary accessible pathway will be installed between the Physics building and gated parking lot 2 during this phase of construction to allow for ease of access to other parts of campus.</div><div><br></div><div>As always, accessibility is part of the design process with all campus construction projects to ensure support for faculty, staff, students, and visitors with disabilities. <Title>Blackboard Issues Today</Title>

    <div class="html-content">To The Campus Community<div><br></div><div>This morning around 10:44 a.m., DoIT became aware of slowness and/or intermittent downtime with our primary Blackboard instance. After some internal investigation, a case was created with Blackboard support (#02983311) at 11:04 a.m., followed by their rolling restart of our system at 11:16 a.m. We held additional phone conferences with Blackboard at 12:58 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. when issues persisted, again intermittently throughout the early afternoon.<div><br></div><div>Blackboard is still conducting a root cause analysis, but the system appeared to be stable as of 3:18 p.m.</div><div><br></div><div>In hindsight, we should have alerted the campus sooner, and apologize for the inconvenience and confusion. <Title>We are running low on food - can you help?</Title>
<Tagline>Please share with others who can donate food for students</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content">We are in great need of the following items:<br><br>Healthy non-sugar sweetened cereals (think Cheerios, Raisin Bran, Oatmeal)<br>Peanut Butter<br>Nuts<br>Spaghetti Sauce<br>Canned fruit packed in its own juice or made with Splenda<br>Jelly<br>Canned tuna packed in water<br>Canned chicken packed in water<br>Healthy snacks<br><br>Some of our students are skipping meals to pay for books or to pay their rent.  Every single non-perishable food item that is donated makes a huge difference to those who are struggling.<br><br>We are hoping departments will host food drives at their holiday parties.<br><br>We have a team of student volunteers who will pick up the food from you.<br><br>Food can also be dropped off at the RAC (to the left as you walk in), Library (to the right as you walk in), Admin (in front of elevators) and Commons (by reception desk).  Look for the bright yellow box that says Retriever Essentials.<br><br>Contact Julie Rosenthal (<a href="mailto:julier@umbc.edu">julier@umbc.edu</a>) to arrange a pick up.<br><br>Thank you for passing the word to others who may be able to assist.<br><br><br></div>

    <p><em>USM PROMISE AGEP: Maryland Transformation</em> is pleased to invite you to attend and participate in the <strong>2018 University System of Maryland PROMISE AGEP Research Symposium and Professional Development Conference on February 16, 2018.</strong> This conference replaces the former PROMISE Research Symposium and adds a professional development component that will prepare graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for faculty positions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM, which includes social sciences) disciplines. This year, PROMISE also invites undergraduate students to come to hear graduate students’ presentations, and to participate in workshops that will prepare them to be graduate students with an eye on becoming future faculty members.</p>
    <p>This conference seeks to provide a venue that will allow students to present their work at any stage, receive feedback in preparation for presenting at larger venues, and provide training that will prepare participants for faculty careers.The event is free and meals are provided. Please apply to present at the conference using the rules in the “Call for Presentations” section below and save the date.</p>

    <p>If you choose to drive on your own, you may pay to park in the <a href="https://www.admissions.umd.edu/visit/unionlanegarage.php" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Union Lane Garage</a> – located between the Adele H. Stamp Student Union Center for Campus Life and Cole Field House. Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. daily. In this garage, you park in a numbered spot, remember your number, and walk out toward the entrance to enter it into the machine, where you will pre-pay for a certain number of hours.     <li><em>Presentation slots are limited to graduate students within the <a href="http://www.usmd.edu/institutions/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">University System of Maryland.</a></em></li>
    <li>A custom webpage will be designed for each presenter. The presenter’s website will include a photo, bio, abstract, synopsis of research, and list of other relevant publications or presentations as applicable. Students who participated in 2015, 2016, and 2017 can update their current pages.</li>
    <li>Postdocs from universities and organizations outside of the University System of Maryland can participate as mentors and judges for poster sessions.</li>
    <li>All graduate students and postdocs are invited to participate as audience members and attend the professional development workshops.</li>
    <li>Undergraduate students are invited to attend to learn from the presentations and to participate in special workshops dedicated to preparing for graduate school, with a focus on thinking about becoming a professor in the future.</li>
    <li>Faculty from within the USM are invited to serve as judges to provide constructive feedback.</li>

    <p>[7 minutes presentation, 3 minutes critique, 2 minutes of questions, traditional PowerPoint presentation]</p>

    <p><strong>December 1, 2017:</strong> “Letter of Intent” to present. This very short email should include name, school, department, choice of oral category (1, 2, 3) or poster, and potential title of your presentation. Email to <a href="mailto:promisestaff@gmail.com">promisestaff@gmail.com</a> with the title, “2018 USM PROMISE AGEP Research Symposium – Intent to Present.”</p>
    <p><em>“TED-Styled” and “Lightning Round” titles must be tailored to appeal to a general audience.</em></p>
    <p>Everyone who expressed an “Intent to Present” as of Dec. 1, 2017, will be in line with the presentation style of their choice. Those who did not specify a category will be given a space for a poster.</p>
