The Chronicle “Great Colleges to Work For" Survey
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
Each year, The Chronicle of Higher Education asks faculty and staff at colleges and universities across the country to rate their workplaces on a host of factors, including benefits, workplace policies, and demographics, to recognize institutions that have built great workplaces.
The Chronicle has again asked UMBC to participate in its “Great Colleges to Work For” program. An important part of this program is an employee survey distributed to a random sample of UMBC’s full-time faculty and exempt and non-exempt staff. In the coming week, an invitation to take this survey will be emailed to a random sample of UMBC faculty and staff. If you receive the anonymous survey we ask that you take a few minutes to respond. Your feedback helps ensure more accurate results for the program. The deadline to complete the survey is April 6, 2018.
The Chronicle will publish a special issue this summer detailing the program findings and recognizing those institutions that are leading the way in their commitment to creating great workplaces.
In 2017, for the eighth consecutive year, UMBC was named one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, and earned its sixth consecutive spot on the list’s “Honor Roll.” The campus received high ratings in key areas such as teaching, senior leadership, and shared governance.

UMBC vs. Vermont in the America East Championship Title Game
UMBC's Men's Basketball team will be advancing to the America East Championship Game following the 75-60 victory over Hartford at home in the new Event Center yesterday. The team is just one game away from winning the Conference title and earning a spot to compete against 67 other teams in NCAA March Madness!
The second-seed Retrievers will face the first-seed Catamounts at the University of Vermont Roy L. Patrick Gymnasium on Saturday, March 10. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
We invite you to join us in cheering on our Retrievers at a special viewing party on campus in the Commons Sports Zone. The party begins at 10:30 a.m. and includes a free breakfast buffet for all attendees and a chance to win some fun prizes!
If you are interested in attending the game in Vermont, tickets can be purchased from the UMBC University Tickets website.

Thank you for making the 2017 MD Charity Campaign a success
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
As co-chairs of the 2017 Maryland Charity Campaign, we wanted to take this time to share with the campus the amazing results of our campaign. With your help, we were able to raise more than $237,000 toward the campaign from over 900 pledges across campus, surpassing our ambitious goal of 50% participation—way to go!
We are moved by this demonstration of caring and commitment by the UMBC community. Our campus is one of the most generous in the state, and our generosity speaks volumes about who we are and our values. Despite our size relative to many of the larger departments across the state, the funds raised by our mid-sized institution accounted for nearly 8% of the total amount of $2.98M raised for the 2017 Maryland Charity Campaign. This truly is a remarkable achievement and serves as a testament to our culture of caring for others less fortunate than ourselves.
This year, we have once again won the campaign's Participation Award for the percentage of UMBC community members who contributed to MCC. We also received the 2017 Schaefer Cares Award, which acknowledges the state department with the most improved participation rate over the prior year's campaign results.
Every year, hundreds of UMBC colleagues make a difference with their charitable giving through this campaign. There are few illustrations of our community's generosity and commitment more powerful than our collective participation in the Maryland Charity Campaign.

LDAP-Master and Webadmin downtime on 3/15 at 2pm
On Thursday, March 15th starting at 2pm LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance. During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable. Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.
The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates. The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Thursday, March 15th.
During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.

Campus Visits for Finalists for Dean of The Erickson School
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
I am writing to update you on the progress of UMBC’s search for the Dean of The Erickson School and to thank you for the valuable input we have received so far.
After a round of off-site interviews, the search committee has narrowed the candidates to three finalists. Each of those finalists will visit the campus over the next two weeks. As a part of each visit, the search committee will host a candidate forum open to all members of the community. The forums will be held on the following dates and times:
- Wednesday, March 7, 12–1 p.m. – Performing Arts & Humanities Building, Room 234
- Thursday, March 8, 12–1 p.m. – Albin O. Kuhn Library, 7th Floor
- Wednesday, March 14, 12–1 p.m. – Performing Arts & Humanities Building, Room 229
The search committee will provide opportunities for input after each forum. The committee hopes that you will meet with each of the candidates, ask questions, and share your feedback. Your input will be helpful for the search committee as it prepares its final recommendations for the position.
Each candidate’s curriculum vitae will be made available on The Erickson School Dean search website, typically one day in advance of each visit. Any additional details about the forums also will be posted on the search website as they become available.
