    <p>On Saturday, May 5, 2018, PROMISE AGEP will be hosting its annual PROMISE AGEP Friends and Family Cookout! You are invited to come, bring your friends, family, and anyone who supported your journey through graduate school. This event is free! Graduate students from all schools within the University System of Maryland (USM) are invited!</p>
    <p><em>Here is a list, if your school is listed, you are invited! <a href="http://www.usmd.edu/institutions/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.usmd.edu/institutions/</a></em></p>
    <p><em>Alumni, faculty, and staff are invited as well.</em></p>
    <p><em>Friends and family members of students who have participated in PROMISE are invited. </em></p>
    <p>If you are from another school, e.g., Howard, Hopkins, GW, and have come to a PROMISE event in the past such as SSI, you are also invited to participate.</p>

    <p>UPDATE 5/5/18 – 9:15 AM: <em>There is a forecast for rain, but it is not scheduled to start until <strong>later</strong> in the afternoon. This event is under a pavilion. We will have music, games, and food until 2:30, and will start the recognition of graduates at 2:30 and likely end at 3 PM to avoid the pending rain.</em></p>

Dr. Bradley received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from UMBC, and leads an award-winning engineering team at NASA. He will be the featured artist at the cookout. </em></p>

<Title>Important Change to GSA Grants Policy</Title>
<Tagline>Please be aware of changes to GSA Grants Policy!</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Starting tomorrow, March 16th, the GSA will be transitioning to a new grants policy. This policy will be available in our <a href="https://gsa.umbc.edu/points-of-policy/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Points of Policy</a> on the GSA website.</div><div><br></div><div>We will no longer have a lottery system for grants. If you would like your grant application to be considered in the lottery system, you must submit your application by the close of business <strong>today</strong>, <strong>March 15th.</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Beginning tomorrow, grant applications will be considered through a review process. In each month, applicants will be selected based on financial and academic need by a review panel of their peers. Decisions will be made by the end of each month. Funding approved by these decisions will be available for use within the 120 days following the decision. The deadline for applications will be the 15th of each month. <strong>Therefore, if you want to use grant funds in May, you must apply by April 15th.</strong></div><div><br></div><div>More information about the new policy will be forthcoming. If you would like to serve on the review panel for grants, please look for a call for reviewers which will go out soon.</div><div><br></div><div>Thank you,</div><div>GSA</div></div>

Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of this year's campus- and system-wide award recipients. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., with lunch provided. The program will begin at 12 p.m.</span></div><br><span>During the ceremony we will honor our faculty and staff colleagues, each of whom was selected by a committee of peers. <Title>One Year Position with Retriever Essentials Food Pantry</Title>

    <div class="html-content">UMBC is delighted that we have received a CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA grant to fund a one-year position working to strengthen Retriever Essentials at UMBC.  This could be the perfect position for a recent graduate.  <br><br>The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA will be responsible for mapping and connecting
      numerous food initiatives on campus and building the capacity for, and
     implementing, a sustainable food access pantry and programming on 
    campus. Retriever Essentials at UMBC will connect the VISTA with 
    organizations,  faculty, and staff who are working to tackle food 
    instability in the campus community.  The VISTA will work to bring these
     groups together, create sustainable partnerships between these 
    stakeholders, and ensure the effectiveness of the programs being 
    offered.The VISTA will also work to support a full-time food pantry to 
    serve the community, regularly hold community dinners to increase 
    awareness about food insecurity issues on our campus and beyond, and run
     outreach programs and workshops for individuals experiencing chronic 
    food insecurity and homelessness.  The VISTA will develop and revitalize
     the campus connection to the Food Recovery Network, SWES, and Maryland 
     Food Bank.

    <div class="html-content"><div><div><div>The Women's Forum recognizes and celebrates the achievements of students, faculty and staff from across the system through award and scholarship programs. All awards and scholarships are open to any person regardless of sex, race, color, religion, age, national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status or disability. The award is open to both men and women. <strong>Application materials must be received by June 30th for consideration.</strong></div></div><div><br></div><div><strong>1. Student Scholarship: </strong>(scholarships are $500/student recipient) is open to all students attending a USM institution. In order to be eligible for the award, you must have earned a total of 48 undergraduate OR 9 graduate credits, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and have demonstrated financial need.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>2. Professional Staff Development Award: </strong>(awards range from $250-$1000) </div><div>provides funding to eligible staff members currently employed at USM institutions for a minimum of one (1) years cumulative service (with verification of employment supported by the applicant's USM institution's Human Resources Department). The USMWF wishes to encourage and enable staff to pursue training and/or professional development activities to enhance current job skills and/or seek career advancement opportunities. Funding can be used for non-credit courses and conferences.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>3. Faculty Research Award (awards range from $500-$1000) </strong>is designed to </div><div>provide a funding opportunity for faculty who are pursuing research on women's experiences: social, scientific, economic, political, and health conditions that impact women. <Title>Quarterly patching downtime on 3/16 and 3/17</Title>

    <p><span>As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Friday, March 16th and Saturday, March 17th.  While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.</span></p>
    <p><span>Friday, 3/16/2018 between 5pm and 8pm (most systems will only be down for a short period during this time): </span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><span>The web hosting environments (virthost and jabba) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)</span></li>
    <li><span>Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)</span></li>
    <ul>
    <li><span>All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched</span></li>
    <li><span>Expected to be unreachable from 5pm to 7pm</span></li>
    </ul>
    <li><span>All HFS (user) servers will be offline</span></li>
    <li><span>Certain software licenses will be unavailable (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)</span></li>
    </ul>
    <p><span>Saturday, 3/17/2018 between 10am and Noon(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):</span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><span>myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality</span></li>
    <li><span>Wiki will be unavailable</span></li>
    <li><span>The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable</span></li>
    </ul>

    <div class="html-content"><strong>Reference &amp; Instruction Librarian</strong><br><br>We seek an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented individual to work as subject librarian in the humanities and to provide general reference assistance to the UMBC community. The successful candidate is expected to provide a wide range of reference, instructional, and outreach services to students, faculty, and staff. This position will work closely with the Instruction Coordinator to design and deliver library curriculum and instruction activities for first-year courses, including English 100 and Introduction to an Honors University seminars. <br><br><strong>RESPONSIBILITIES: </strong><br>This position serves as subject librarian to a number of academic departments in the humanities. Duties include providing library instruction, outreach, collection development, and research support to students, faculty and staff. As part of a department of six faculty librarians and one support staff, this position provides general reference service to the campus community (including shared evening and weekend hours) and participates in the planning and implementation of departmental operations. As an instruction librarian, this position designs and delivers library curriculum and instruction activities and contributes to the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Library’s information literacy and instructional program.<br><br><strong>REQUIREMENTS: </strong><br><ul><li>Master of Library &amp; Information Science degree (or equivalent ALA accredited degree)</li><li>Demonstrated ability and interest in providing dynamic library instruction and contributing to a team-based information literacy program</li><li>Demonstrated ability and interest in the areas of library public services and outreach</li><li>Demonstrated high-quality written and verbal communication</li><li>Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team</li><li>Ability to initiate and lead projects to completion</li><li>Interest and/or experience working with diverse populations, particularly students</li><li>Undergraduate or advanced degree in a humanities discipline preferred</li><li>Reference experience in an academic library setting preferred</li><li>Direct teaching or library instruction experience preferred</li></ul><strong>SALARY AND BENEFITS:  </strong><br>This position is a full time (40 hours/week), 12-month library faculty appointment at anticipated rank of Librarian I. Salary commensurate with experience—minimum salary $46,000. Comprehensive benefits.
