<Title>Quarterly patching downtime on 5/25 &amp; 6/2</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Friday, May 25th and Saturday, June 2nd.  While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.</span></p><p><span>Friday, 5/25/2018 between 5pm and 8pm (most systems will only be down for a short period during this time): </span></p><ul><li><span>The web hosting environments (virthost and jabba) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)</span></li><li><span>Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)</span></li><ul><li><span>All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched</span></li><li><span>Expected to be unreachable from 5pm to 7pm</span></li></ul><li><span>All HFS (user) servers will be offline</span></li><li><span>Certain software licenses will be unavailable (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)</span></li></ul><p><span>Saturday, 6/2/2018 between 9am and 11am(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):</span></p><ul><li><span>myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality</span></li><li><span>Wiki will be unavailable</span></li><li><span>The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable</span></li></ul><p><br></p><p><span>Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions.</span></p><p><span>Thanks!</span></p><p><span>Tim Champ</span></p><p><span>Manager of Unix Infrastructure</span></p><p><span>UMBC DoIT</span></p></div>

Kuhn Library &amp; Gallery at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County seeks an experienced manager to become a key member of the Library Executive Team and to provide future vision, oversight, leadership and strategic direction for the library's information technology infrastructure including the exploration, integration and implementation of new and emerging technologies.<br><br>This permanent status-eligible full-time, non-tenure track library faculty position at the rank of Librarian II reports to the Library Director. The Associate Director works closely with the UMBC Division of Information Technology (DoIT) to advise library leadership on current, new and emerging library applications and knowledge systems that will advance the library's vision, mission and strategic plan (<a href="https://library.umbc.edu/admin/StrategicPlan2018.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://library.umbc.edu/admin/StrategicPlan2018.pdf</a>) Working in a collaborative library and university environment, the Associate Director will manage a full time staff of 4 and student workers.     <p><strong>Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III </strong></p>
    <p>Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, President of UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) since 1992, is a consultant on science and math education to national agencies, universities, and school systems. He was named by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. He also chaired the National Academies’ committee that produced the report, <em>Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads</em> (2011). His 2013 TED talk highlights the “<a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/freeman_hrabowski_4_pillars_of_college_success_in_science" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Four Pillars of College Success in Science</a>.”</p>
    <p>Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by<em> TIME</em> (2012) and one of America’s Best Leaders by <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report</em> (2008), he also received TIAA-CREF’s <em>Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence</em> (2011), the Carnegie Corporation’s <em>Academic Leadership Award</em> (2011), and the <em>Heinz Award</em> (2012) for contributions to improving the “Human Condition.” UMBC has been recognized as a model for inclusive excellence by such publications as <em>U.S. News, </em>which the past eight years has recognized UMBC as a national leader in academic innovation and undergraduate teaching. <Title>On the passing of County Executive Kamenetz</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Dear Members of the UMBC Community,</span><br><br><span>The UMBC community was deeply saddened this morning to hear of the sudden passing of Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. We extend heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time.</span><br><br><span>County Executive Kamenetz made significant contributions to our region and the state during his long public service career. We are grateful for his commitment to supporting UMBC.</span><br><br><span>Condolences may be sent to the Historic Courthouse, </span>400 Washington Avenue, Towson, Maryland, 21204<span>.</span><br><br><span>The county executive was scheduled to appear tonight </span><span>at a gubernatorial candidate forum organized by the UMBC College Democrats, a student organization. That event will be rescheduled. Instead, the group will gather for a moment of reflection on County Executive Kamenetz’s public service career at 7 p.m. </span><span>in UMBC’s University Center Ballroom.
