Dissertation House Application Procedures

Both the on-campus setting and the retreat setting provide Dissertation House participants with productive and rewarding scholastic engagement. Students who participate in this program will spend each day thinking, writing, and sharing ideas about their doctoral dissertations. Students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them completing their degrees.

The Dissertation House period can span either a Tuesday – Friday (9 a.m. – 5 p.m., non-residential) or a Friday – Sunday weekend (includes evening sessions) commitment to focus on the doctoral dissertation. The Dissertation House activities focus on areas where students typically have difficulty: conceptualizing a topic, writing a literature review, transitioning from a proposal to a dissertation, analyzing data, writing the last chapter, and editing. Students may apply to attend the next Dissertation House during open application enrollment, by submitting two parts of an application.

PART I:

I. Submit a brief description (maximum 2 pages, font size 11-12 point 1-inch margins) that describes the project that you wish to accomplish during the Dissertation House period. Applications will neither be reviewed nor accepted outside of the application enrollment period.

PART II:

II. Please use the following guidelines for the application:

(1) Summary of the project, including research question(s), data or texts, and method

(2) Amount completed on the project to date

(3) Any obstacles that you are encountering that hinder completion of the dissertation.

(4) Include the following header information with the description:

Name

Address

Telephone numbers (home, office, and fax)

E-mail address

Academic Program and Year in the program

Dates/Location: July 9 to 12 (Tuesday – Friday), 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Dissertation House will be held in COMM 329 (for Dissertation House) and COMM 328 (for one-on-one sessions).

Application Enrollment Period: Application can be submitted within a designated 2-week period, usually scheduled 1-2 months prior to the next Dissertation House session. Email applications to promisestaff@gmail.com. Please use the words “Dissertation House” in the subject line of your email.

Selection Process: 12-15 participants will be selected for participation in the Dissertation House. The following applicants will have priority: (1) Applicants who plan to finish the Ph.D. within the next 6 months; (2) Individuals who are working on dissertations and theses rather than a proposal; (3) Applicants who submit earliest; and (4) Individuals who appear most able to benefit from the services offered at the Dissertation House.

If your application is accepted, you will receive an acceptance notice via email and additional details about the Dissertation House. All students, including those who have not applied or those who are not selected, have the option to participate in the next online challenge, a virtual version of the Dissertation House.

Remembering Sam McCready, emeritus professor of theatre

Sam McCready, well-beloved former professor of theatre who mentored the careers of dozens of UMBC students, passed away on February 10 at the age of 82.

During his years at the university, Mr. McCready directed thirty productions, beginning with The Boys from Syracuse by Rodgers and Hart in 1984, and ending with Shakespeare’s Macbeth in 2001. He helped foster the growing Theatre Department’s reputation for exceptionally high-quality, imaginative performances. Three of his productions — The Importance of Being Oscar by Micheal Mac Liammóir (1986), Spring’s Awakening by Frank Wedekind (1987), and The Diary of a Scoundrel by Alexander Ostrovsky (1996) — were invited to the finals of the American College Theater Festival at Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. As an actor with the Maryland Stage Company, he was particularly noted for his interpretation of roles by Samuel Beckett, which he performed internationally. Born in 1932 in Ireland, Mr. McCready was a founding member of the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, and also taught at University College of North Wales, and Stranmillis Training College.

Last month, many of Mr. McCready's former UMBC students, colleagues, and friends traveled to Baltimore from around the country to visit him in hospice, sharing stories and reminiscences. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and son, Richard. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 1:30 p.m., at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 10689 Owen Brown Road, Columbia, MD.

“In lieu of flowers, we are asking that people make a contribution to the Arbor Day Foundation,” says Richard. “My father adored nature, and planting trees in his honour would be the most appropriate way to remember him.”

Launching new branding for UMBC

Dear Colleagues,

After nearly two years of brand message and logo development with campus partners and generous input from students, faculty, staff, and alumni, I am excited to share that we are making final preparations to launch new branding for UMBC. We will introduce the new branding from the inside out, first informing campus colleagues about the new elements available for telling our stories before we go public on April 3.

During the next month, Office of Institutional Advancement staff and others will meet with campus leaders, departments, offices, and other groups to introduce the branding guide, including guidelines and downloadable graphics to empower our work and share our achievements more effectively.

If you would like to have someone come speak to your unit, please contact Miriam Tillman at mir@umbc.edu.

We will also share the same presentation at noontime brown-bag sessions open to all (options are March 8, 15, 22, and 29 in Commons 328 and March 25 in Commons 318).

You’ll also start to see the branding on campus and in advertising in the D.C. and Baltimore areas and in national media such as Inside Higher Education and The Chronicle of Higher Education. In addition, the UMBC Bookstore will carry items with our new logo beginning in April.

Starting Friday, March 4, you will be able to order updated letterhead and business cards in the same way you have done in the past (see our instructions for ordering stationery). Letterhead and other items will also be available for download online.

Thank you for your feedback throughout the process to help create branding tools that reflect the UMBC experience. Brand identity is more than a logo or marketing tool. It is who we are, what we say, and how we act. It is how we describe ourselves, and what we want others to think about us. Our culture, and the experiences others have with our campus, define our brand far more than any marketing campaign.

Thank you for all you do to make UMBC an exceptional community of inquiring minds.

Lisa Akchin, Associate Vice President for Engagement

Sherman Center 2019 Faculty Research Award Recipients

The Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities is pleased to announce its 2018-19 research fellows, lead investigator, Dr. Susan Sonnenschein, Professor of Psychology, and co-investigator, Dr. Claudia Galindo, Associate Professor of Education, University of Maryland, College Park.

In a multi-year study, Improving Outcomes for Underserved Populations: An Examination of the Literacy Fellows Program, Dr. Sonnenschein and Dr. Galindo will investigate the implementation and effects of the Sherman Center/Shriver Center Literacy Fellows Program (LFP). The LFP is a volunteer program that places UMBC undergraduate students in early childhood classrooms to support young children’s literacy and language development. The mixed methods study will address the following research questions:

How is the LFP implemented? Does implementation vary across classrooms and/or schools? And, if so, why?

What are the challenges faced by the teachers and volunteers in implementing the LFP?

What are the literacy outcomes for children who participated in the LFP?

Are the potential benefits from the LFP comparable across different groups of children (e.g., English learners, children who start school "not ready" in reading) or do certain groups benefit more than others?

The Sherman Center award will allow Drs. Sonnenschein and Galindo to advance the Center’s work while also contributing to existing research on the role of community volunteers and school-university partnerships in improving young students’ educational experiences and outcomes. Please join us in congratulating them.

The Sherman Center request for proposals for the 2019-20 funding cycle will be announced in September 2019 and proposals will be due in January 2020.
