<Tagline>Rising college costs brings challenges for students</Tagline>

A new Temple University survey found that thousands of college students today can’t afford basic needs like food and housing, and some even end up homeless.

Nationwide, a majority of students who face food insecurity are employed. They are not only working hard in classes, but also spending 20-40 hours a week working to afford their rent, with not much left for routine grocery shopping. To quote from the video: "It's sounds to me like students are coming here (to this food pantry) because they are working their butts off and this is their last hope...It's not an issue of personal responsibility."

It's no longer unusual that you go to a college campus and find a quasi- homeless shelter or food pantry supporting the campus community. Retriever Essentials aims to provide students, faculty, and staff with nonperishable food items to ease the burden of purchasing healthy staples each week. Our belief is that with less stress on how to make ends meet, students are able to focus better on their coursework and reach their fullest academic potential.

The Learning Resources Center, Office of Academic Standards and Policy Administration, and the newly created Office of Academic Advocacy will be co-located in Sherman Hall, B Wing, Room 345, as the Academic Success Center. The Center will have a unifying mission to support all undergraduate students through the delivery of a robust array of academic support services that enhance and empower students to successfully reach their educational goals. Through a coordinated approach with campus partners, the new center will provide opportunities for students to access academic skills support, tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic policy/petition information, and academic advocacy in one location. In collaboration with colleges and other campus offices, the Center will assist all students in their transition to college and help support their academic endeavors throughout their UMBC undergraduate career. The Center welcomes questions and inquiries from all students, faculty, and staff.

Under the leadership of Associate Vice Provost Amanda Knapp, Ph.D., the Division's Office of Academic Advocacy will initially provide an enhanced array of academic support services for entering freshmen and continuing students who entered UMBC as Freshmen. In collaboration with its campus partners, the Office will coordinate outreach to those undergraduate students experiencing academic challenges and provide individual support to promote undergraduate student persistence, academic progression, and timely graduation. The Office will house UMBC’s academic advocates, each of whom will be affiliated with an academic college. Together, they will work closely with the college's academic support services, advising, and departments to provide a coordinated approach to improve academic progression to graduation. The Office will also act as a campus resource for faculty and staff who wish to refer freshmen cohort students in need of additional academic support.

Katharine H. Additional base funding for UMBC includes $1.45 million to advance degree production in areas of high workforce demand, $2 million to move UMBC closer to the USM average for state funds per student, $1.8 million to open the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building, and $5 million to support investments in instructional capacity, student success initiatives, research capacity, student support services, and administrative and infrastructure improvements. Out-of-state undergraduate tuition and graduate student tuition will increase 3 percent.

We encourage members of the UMBC community to let the Governor and your state senators and delegates know how much their support means to our campus.
