The NASA Postdoctoral Program offers U.S. and international scientists the opportunity to advance their research while contributing to NASA’s scientific goals. The NPP supports fundamental science; explores the undiscovered; promotes intellectual growth; and encourages scientific connections.

Selected by a competitive peer-review process, NPP Fellows complete one- to three-year Fellowship appointments that advance NASA’s missions in earth science, heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics, space bioscience, aeronautics and engineering, human exploration and space operations, and astrobiology.

Current research opportunities can be viewed on-line: https://npp.usra.edu/opportunities/

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in hand before beginning the fellowship, but may apply while completing the degree requirements. U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, and foreign nationals eligible for J-1 status as a Research Scholar, may apply.

Stipends start at $60,000 per year, with supplements for high cost-of-living areas and for certain academic specialties. Financial assistance is available for relocation as well as subsidized health insurance, and $10,000 per year is provided for professional and programmatic travel.

Applications are accepted three times each year:

• March 1
• July1
• November 1

Are you or do you know a “Rising Star”?

Drs. Cynthia Leifer and Hector Aguilar-Carreno in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University have been awarded an NIH NIAID Research Education Program grant entitled “Cornell Program to Increase Faculty Diversity and Promote Research Excellence”.

Several departments within Cornell University have successfully employed targeted pre-interviews on an ad hoc basis to increase the diversity of their applicant pool for faculty positions. This has led to an increase in diverse hires.

An exciting part of our program is that it will allow us to expand what has been done on a small ad hoc basis. We are looking for these “Rising Stars”: URM postdoctoral scientists doing high quality NIAID-mission related research getting ready to apply for faculty positions, to invite them to take part in a pre-interview at Cornell University. The pre-interview will include guidance on how to complete the application and formal interview process at Cornell. While taking part in the Rising Star program cannot guarantee a faculty position at Cornell, we can alert participants to upcoming openings. Any participant offered a position will be paired up with a mentor ambassador who can assist them in their decision. Once hired, the Rising Star will become a participant in the career development portions of the overall grant, which includes courses for skill development, research experience enhancement and mentoring.

To be considered for the Rising Star program, please send a copy of your updated cv, a one page research statement and the contact information for 3 professional references to us at pace@cornell.edu.

Ongoing electrical work in Data Centers today and Saturday

Throughout the day today (Tuesday June 18th) electricians will be conducting maintenance in our backup data center located just off campus in the research park. During this work we do not expect to see any interruption of services. All of the equipment has multiple power supplies, and we are cutting power to only part of the room at a time so the electricians can work safely. There is always the potential for something to fail unexpectedly and I wanted to make sure the campus was aware of the on going work. We expect work to be completed later this afternoon in that data center and I'll send out another notice once full service is restored to that space.

We will also be finishing the work that started two weeks ago in our primary data center this coming Saturday. While we again do not expect any outage, we moved the work to the weekend with the gracious help from our facilities management group to avoid any potential interruptions of service with orientation.

I wanted to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we perform this work to service the power conditioners and clean up the wiring in these spaces.

If you have any questions about this work or would like more information, please email me directly.

Thank You,

UMBC Leaders Share Insights, Forge Connections at CLDE19

The UMBC delegation to last week's 2019 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Meeting in Fort Lauderdale shared insights and forged connections with colleagues from across the U.S. 20 members of the UMBC community participated, including Provost Philip Rous and leaders from the Shriver Center, Honors College, Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program, Student Affairs, SGA, and other student organizations (full list at the end of this post).

Throughout the conference, the organizers ran a survey asking participants to share a one-word definition of civic learning and democratic engagement. Here's a word cloud of the participants' responses.

10 of the UMBC participants led a session entitled "Change the Meanings, Change the Culture," about how UMBC has developed a robust civic culture that bridges academic affairs and student affairs.

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life's David Hoffman and Romy Hübler led a session called "Engaged Pedagogy and Civic Learning: Promoting Civic Agency" with Erica Kohl-Arenas, Faculty Director of Imagining America, and Robin Bachin, Assistant Provost for Civic and Community Engagement at the University of Miami. David and Romy also led "Thrive Your Pedagogy: Creating Mutual and Reciprocal Environments for Student Learning" with Craig Berger, a former UMBC colleague now at Kent State University.

David also spoke at the opening plenary session about the Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Theory of Change, a forward-looking document around which the past three national CLDE meetings have been organized. The CLDE Theory of Change draws heavily on UMBC experiences and examples. In addition, Romy and David worked with colleagues from Grand Valley State University and Kent State University to launch a process of developing new tools to promote civic courage, one of the CLDE Theory of Change learning outcomes. Their work on those tools is supported by a grant from Bringing Theory to Practice.

Interruption to Campus Services around 3:20pm today

This afternoon, at around 3:20pm, we suffered a power outage to one of the racks in the computer room in Engineering. This rack holds key equipment that provides data storage for a good number of servers in our infrastructure, including the the main campus website, the central UMBC sites web environment, Peoplesoft Campus Solutions and the Peoplesoft HR system. Power was restored within a minute, and we have been working to restore connectivity as the equipment comes back online.

Service to the main website and other public facing services was restored around 4:00pm.

Service to the HR system was restored at 4:50pm, and we are finishing restoring service to the CS system which we expect to have operational by 5:30pm.

We will send another message when service has been fully restored later this afternoon.

We appreciate everyone's patience as we work to restore connectivity, if you have any questions about this outage or would like more information, please feel free to email me at damian@umbc.edu

DoIT to Auto-enroll all New Employees in Duo 2-factor Login

<Tagline>Reminder: Faculty Deadline Updated to 9/30/19</Tagline>

As part of the recent initiative to convert all staff to Duo (umbc.edu/go/duo), the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) will be automatically requiring Duo for new employees, starting Wednesday, June 5, 2019. This does not affect any current staff, who should already be enrolled, albeit manually by DoIT this past year. However, it does assure all future employees will be using an effective IT security practice.

Generally, this year’s rollout of Duo to all current staff went very smoothly, and our Technology Support Center (TSC) fielded fewer calls or tickets than expected. Similarly, while UMBC was the first to purchase Duo in the USM, both UMB and UMCP now require all faculty and staff to use Duo and experienced minimal issues. Accordingly, DoIT’s goal is for all current and future UMBC employees to be enrolled in Duo, which we’re close to having now.

Finally, DoIT wants to remind all faculty with PeopleSoft access (virtually all faculty) that they will be required to use Duo by Monday, September 30, 2019. Note: The original 9/1/19 deadline was revised to get past the hectic start of term and 10th day add/drop date.

Again, more information about Duo is available at umbc.edu/go/duo. If you have further questions, please contact the Technology Support Center by either submitting a support request atmy.umbc.edu/help or calling (410) 455-3838.
