Emergency Preparedness Resources

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

The following are resources for our campus community to use in the event of an emergency situation on or near campus. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with these items.

E2Campus Emergency Text Alert System
UMBC uses the E2Campus emergency text alert system. The system allows rapid dissemination of information to the campus community in the event of an emergency through all text-enabled devices. If you have not yet done so, we strongly encourage all members of the campus community to sign up for these alerts.

Police Emergencies
If you are the victim of or a witness to criminal activity on campus, or if you observe suspicious activity or behavior, please contact UMBC Police immediately at 410-455-5555. If a situation arises that warrants a campus shelter-in-place or other campus-wide safety measures, UMBC Police will alert the campus through the emergency alert text-messaging system. If such a situation happens, please follow all instructions provided by UMBC Police.

Weather Emergencies
UMBC receives real-time warnings about critical weather events in our area, such as tornadoes, from a national weather information and monitoring system. We use this system to alert the campus immediately through our emergency alert text-messaging system, as well as to issue the all clear when danger has passed. Due to the nature of these storms, there is often little warning before severe weather strikes. If you hear local emergency sirens or in the event of a severe weather alert, please seek shelter immediately in the nearest building and, if available, follow signs to designated shelter areas. Move to the lowest level of the building and shelter in place in interior rooms, corridors, or stairways. Stay away from windows. If you are in a vehicle and unable to safely leave to seek shelter, keep your head below window level and leave the vehicle running so that safety systems such as airbags remain active. Wait for the all clear before returning to normal activity.

Fire Emergencies
If there is a fire in your classroom, workspace, or living area, leave the area immediately and pull the fire alarm. If a fire alarm sounds in your building, evacuate the building immediately. From a safe location, call UMBC Police at 410-455-5555. UMBC Police will contact our partners at the Baltimore County Fire Department for assistance. Do not re-enter the building until instructed to do so.

General Safety Tips
UMBC Police provides an escort service for anyone who feels unsafe when walking on or near campus. If you would like an escort, please call 410-455-5555. If you observe suspicious activity or behavior, contact the police immediately.

The UMBC Counseling Center provides free confidential services for UMBC students. If you are in need of counseling services or would like to learn more about available services, please call 410-455-2472 or visit the Counseling Center’s website.

The UMBC Police wish all members of our community a safe and productive semester.

Paul Dillon, UMBC Chief of Police

Reduction in off-campus network speeds due to cable cut

Monday 9/23 at around noon a contractor working just outside of UMBC cut through a set of fiber optic networking cables that provide network service to UMBC's main campus, and to our IMET facility in downtown Baltimore.

Until service is restored, the campus is operating without our 100gbit/s high speed link to the Internet 2 research and education network, and one of our 10gbit/s links to the Internet. We still have a full 10gbit/s link to the Internet and can reach all of the Internet 2 connected sites through this remaining connection.

At this point we are working to have the cable repaired, and hope to have news on that front as the week progresses. During this time the campus does have adequate bandwidth for all normal activities and should not see a noticeable difference in network performance, but we no longer have a redundant link outside until this cable is repaired.

We have patched through a temporary connection to the IMET facility downtown and have restored service to that building as of late Tuesday afternoon.

We will continue to update the campus as we have additional information.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about this issue, please feel free to email me and I'll be happy to discuss it in more detail.

This online exhibit accompanies an exhibition presented at UMBC’s Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery from August 28–December 18, 2019. The exhibition represents the first retrospective of the artist’s career in over thirty years.

Created between 1962 and 2006, the works reproduced online are drawn entirely from the Robert W. Fichter Archive at UMBC. The selection highlights the artist’s experimental approach to examining the human condition. Employing shifting moods and mediums as well as wit, humor, and satire, Fichter delivers trenchant critiques of war, nuclear proliferation, and environmental disaster. Firmly rooting his expressive compositions in a strong sense of place—the surreal landscapes of his native Florida—he presents a singular vision of humanity on the brink.
