Dear Colleagues,

The completion of UMBC’s annual promotion and tenure process provides us with an opportunity to recognize members of our community who have been promoted in rank based on the excellence they have demonstrated. This rigorous review process serves to uphold our ideals as a scholarly community focused on supporting our students, advancing knowledge, and serving the broader community. Individuals who are promoted have demonstrated wide-ranging commitment to our mission as a research university while reaching significant milestones in their roles as teachers, scholars, and mentors.

This year, we recognize the success of 47 colleagues: teachers and mentors who have found new ways to reach and inspire students; scholars committed to deepening our understanding of humanity and the natural world that surrounds us; and those whose work advances community-engaged scholarship and learning.
USM Statement on Injustice

Dear UMBC Community,

We want to share with our campus this statement released today by the leadership of the University System of Maryland on deeply disturbing events that remind us of the structural racism that underlies our society. UMBC is proud to join our USM colleagues in this statement.

In addition to these acts of violence, the current pandemic has exacerbated many other systemic inequalities that persist in our society. Low-income families and communities of color are disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 virus and also face barriers to treatment and prevention resources. As the financial aspect of this crisis deepens, these families also struggle more than other groups with economic disenfranchisement, including job loss and resource scarcity.

As we reflect on current events, we deeply appreciate our UMBC community and its commitment to inclusive excellence. We also understand that this commitment requires all of us to do more to confront injustice in the world. We know that many in our communities are struggling right now. Even if we cannot be physically together to process this loss and the challenges that seem to surround us, we believe that our UMBC is uniquely situated to address these issues -- together.

If you feel you have been affected by racism or discrimination, please know that the Office of Equity and Inclusion is available to support you. The philosophy of civic engagement embodied in this approach located democracy and community in everyday settings, not only in government, elections, and off-campus service projects.”
