DoIT Offers Start of Semester Student Technology Sprints

<Tagline>Make sure you're tech "self-sufficient" to learn online</Tagline>

The start of semester is always busy, but especially during a global pandemic. We got through Spring 20, but since every student will likely have at least one online or hybrid Fall 20 course, the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) strongly recommends that all students check they have the necessary technology setup to be successful. To help, DoIT is hosting 12 Sprint sessions for 10-minute, virtual walk-in consults or pop-up support groups on key topics that include the following:

Getting Online*

Getting A Computer*

Checking Your Blackboard Collaborate Audio Connection (essential)

Using Virtual Computing Lab & Software (recommended)

Using myUMBC Groups & Webex Teams for Student Clubs & Organizations (8/26, 8/31, 9/2 and 9/9 only).

The Sprints will occur across four weeks from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates:

Tues., 8/18 & Thurs., 8/20

Tues. 8/25, Wed., 8/26, Thurs., 8/27 (1st day of classes)

And from 11 a.m. to noon on the following dates:

Mon., 8/31, Tues., 9/1, Wed., 9/2, Thurs., 9/3, Fri., 9/4

Tues., 9/8 & Wed., 9/9

Due to the short format, these virtual support sessions are designed for quick consults, not deep dives or customized training sessions. Also, you will likely be in a virtual room with several people who also are interested in the same topic, and being helped by a DoIT support staff member. Often, you can learn by listening to this Q&A, but if you want a personalized consult, please use my.umbc.edu/help to open a Request Tracker (RT) ticket.

About the Sprint

The sprints will take place in a Blackboard Collaborate virtual conference room. Use the link for each event up to 15 minutes before the start time. While you can just “show up,” advance registration -- by indicating you are “Going” through the myUMBC event link above -- is appreciated and can help DoIT gauge how many support staff are needed in each breakout room. However, if you require live closed captioning, advance registration is required.

Prior to the session

If this is your first time joining one of our live sessions, please review the Getting Started Guide. You will also find additional helpful information for using Blackboard Collaborate at our extensive FAQs.

For the best experience, we recommend using Google Chrome or a recent browser update. Closing any unnecessary browser tabs will help conserve your bandwidth. After joining the session, please configure your audio.

* Note: As announced to all incoming students on 7/22/20, since UMBC requires all students to have a computer and Internet access, financial aid may be used to meet this requirement. To learn more, students should contact their financial aid counselor at financialaid.umbc.edu/contact.

Guidelines for Hosting Events during the Fall 2020 Semester

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Traditionally, events have helped create a robust sense of campus life, and we anticipate that many UMBC groups plan to host events this fall. The Events and Activities Workgroup of the Fall Planning Coordinating Committee (FPCC) has worked to determine how to support events during the fall semester. As we approach the beginning of the fall semester, you will see many traditional UMBC events, including the Fall Opening Meeting and Convocation, conducted virtually. During the semester, most UMBC events are expected to be conducted virtually.

The Fall Planning Coordinating Committee (FPCC) has adopted Guidelines for Hosting Events for the fall 2020 semester. This document provides the framework and guiding principles for in-person event planning, as well as resources and tools to help ensure online events are dynamic, interesting, and engaging. These guidelines may change on short notice depending on external circumstances.

Virtual Events

The FPCC’s Events and Community Engagement Work Group has curated resources to support campus stakeholders with planning virtual events, and in the near future will roll out a series of brown bag sessions and other resources to help our community with the transition to virtual event planning.

In-Person and Hybrid Events

If an event cannot be hosted virtually, and campus stakeholders wish to seek authorization to host an in-person or hybrid event, they can submit an event exception request. The exception process, which will require about ten business days, is designed to determine the feasibility of hosting an in-person event, and to ensure that all possible precautions have been taken to manage risk and accessibility.

We are not encouraging in-person events, and not every event exception request application will be approved. As the semester progresses, we will actively monitor conditions and adjust the campus guidelines as needed. Even if your application is approved, you should have a back-up plan in case health and safety conditions change.

Responding to the Tragedy in Beirut

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Our hearts are heavy as we see the impact of the devastating chemical explosion in Beirut on August 4 that killed more than 200 people, injured thousands, and left as many as 300,000 homeless. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, first responders, and the Lebanese community around the world, including here at UMBC.

We are aware that this catastrophe comes at a time when many people in our communities and around the world are already suffering because of the global coronavirus pandemic and other crises, including a gas explosion in a Baltimore residential neighborhood today. This context makes the tragedy in Beirut even more challenging to process, and the journey to recovery even more fraught. However, seeking to support those who are suffering, as we are able, can generate a powerful, positive response that brings care and kindness to those most in need.

If you would like to provide material support, the Lebanese Red Cross and the United Nations’ World Food Programme are among the many groups contributing to disaster response and recovery in Lebanon.

Tragedies impact community members in different ways, and we want to be certain that students, faculty, and staff who may need support as a result of this incident have information about resources available to them. Faculty and staff can request counseling through the ComPsych Employee Assistance Program by calling 855-410-7628. Students seeking support can access the Counseling Center at 410-455-2472 or, at the Shady Grove campus, the USG Center for Counseling and Consultation at 301-738-6273.
