Dear UMBC Community,

We are delighted to share news that the 2021 U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings released today reflect UMBC’s continued status as a national leader in higher education. UMBC is ranked #11 in undergraduate teaching and is the #9 most innovative university in the nation, among other prominent rankings. And UMBC is the only Maryland school represented in the top ten in innovation, positioned alongside such universities as Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, and Caltech.

Our University has long had a reputation for academic excellence and for being a welcoming community. That reputation has encouraged thousands of students to choose UMBC this year to begin their studies or continue working toward a degree, even during a time of uncertainty. 
 
Overall, 13,497 students are enrolled at UMBC this fall. At a time when many campuses across the nation are experiencing enrollment challenges, UMBC’s student body is down less than one percent compared to fall 2019. UMBC's current undergraduate population is 10,932 strong. The graduate student population has increased to 2,565.

We are particularly proud to share that more than 120 students have returned to UMBC to complete their degrees through the Finish Line initiative. UMBC is welcoming back some of these students after several years away from college, and we are so glad they are on track to finish their degree programs.

Thanks to UMBC’s dedicated enrollment management and marketing staff in Undergraduate Admissions, the Graduate School, and the Division of Professional Studies, and to faculty and staff across our colleges, schools, and International Education Services, for their work in these challenging times to engage and enroll new and returning students.

The SPS Workday system allows employees to enroll, view, and make changes to their health benefits. With the Annual Open Enrollment period approaching in October, UMBC Human Resources is encouraging employees to follow the instructions to create new login credentials using the new OneLogin process.

SPS Workday will require employees to create new login credentials using your existing SPS ID and a temporary password found in these instructions. In addition, this system will require users to verify their identity with each login. You will be able to select a method that works best for you—a one-time passcode via email or text, a mobile app, or by answering security questions.

COVID-19 Health & Safety

  • UMBC’s Public Health Dashboard provides timely data about the prevalence of COVID-19 within our main campus, based on UMBC’s on-campus testing and reported results from off-campus testing among UMBC faculty, staff, and students who are approved to be on campus this fall. UMBC’s current positivity rate is 0.7%.

New Service-Learning Opportunity: Apply for the Reach Together Program

  • Students: UMBC’s Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program, in collaboration with The Shriver Center, is seeking applicants for the Reach Together Program. This new program engages UMBC students in mentoring and tutoring Baltimore City youth. Applicants should be in their second year at UMBC or beyond. Mentor-tutors will each provide targeted math tutoring for five students through an eight-week program (September 28 – November 20) with a week of training starting on September 21. Submit your application as soon as possible through this Google form and schedule a 15-minute interview between now and September 18.
