UMBC is fortunate to have so many talented and dedicated Exempt and Non-Exempt staff working to support our mission. This year in particular, our staff have displayed exceptional creativity, resourcefulness, and resilience as our University community has come together to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff worked tirelessly to support our transition to the new realities of online teaching and learning, implement telework, and transform our physical campus to promote health and safety.

Each year, we encourage administrators, faculty, and staff to nominate staff members for one of these prestigious awards:

UMBC Presidential Distinguished Staff Awards
University System of Maryland Board of Regents Staff Awards
Jakubik Family Endowment Staff Award
Karen L. Wensch Endowment Award for Outstanding Non-Exempt Staff

Given the outstanding contributions of our staff during this unprecedented time, we ask that you reflect on the work within your units and across the campus and nominate a colleague. This process gives both UMBC and the University System of Maryland the opportunity to recognize exemplary work at our University. We are eager to honor our colleagues and need your help to do so.

Descriptions of the individual awards and the eligibility requirements for each, as well as the nomination form, can be found at 2020-21 Staff Awards.
October is Relationship Violence Awareness Month

<Tagline>We see you. We believe you. You matter.</Tagline>

Relationship Violence Awareness Month (RVAM) brings people together to create and generate discussion and skill-building on how to prevent relationship violence in our schools, workplaces, and communities. While providing support and care to survivors of relationship violence is an everyday action, this awareness month also carves out intentional moments to honor and believe survivors’ stories and experiences. As we continue this work throughout the pandemic, it is also critical for us to consider how the intersections of covid-19 and social isolation have exacerbated relationship violence over the past several months.

Since most of campus remains learning and working remotely, we won’t be able to physically come together this October to do this critical work in person. The Women’s Center and all of our campus partners including the Office of Equity and Inclusion, University Health Services, the Counseling Center, Green Dot, We Believe You, and Retriever Courage, and more will nonetheless continue to promote awareness and prevention this month.

Learn - Throughout the month of October, the Women’s Center will be focusing on various topics and issues related to relationship violence awareness and prevention. Key themes we will be exploring include: The Covid-Crossings of Relationship Violence, Relationship Violence’s Matrix of Oppression, and Un/Healthy Relationships for Young Adults.

We’ll be sharing weekly postings to help guide your self-learning that will include relevant webinars or events, podcasts or blogs, and on and off-campus resources. Program regulations were amended again in December 2010 by Executive Order[5] establishing the PMF Program as one of the three student Pathways to federal employment.
What Do You Want to Change About Government?

What Will You Give?

You will give the best you have to give to a cause greater than yourself. You will bring fresh, new ideas and a willingness to take on challenges never dreamed possible. Your zeal for the position will serve to spark new energy and excitement in your co-workers. As part of the PMF “fraternal order,” you will portray your elite status through the quality of your work and service to your country. You will need to demonstrate leadership, foster teamwork, set goals and, in the end, deliver something of value to the American people. See Notable PMF Graduates at the end of this article from Wikipedia.

Bouncing Back During Challenges: A Short Guide to Resilience

During these unique times, navigating physical distance, managing classes online, and adjusting to new living situations may mean that it is time to sharpen your resiliency reserves.

Resilience is one’s ability to recover from difficulties. It is thought that resilience can be learned and includes being aware of, and changing how we think about events from initially negative to more positive appraisals. For example,

“The pandemic is going to make it impossible for me to find a job, why even try!”

While it is true that it might be more challenging to find a job after graduating, another way to look at this challenge is,

“While I may not be able to find the exact job I was hoping for, I have skills in being able to work online, and can add a lot to a company. I am going to apply to a wide range of positions!”

The first statement might leave you feeling defeated and not wanting to do anything while the second statement validates the difficulties and invites creative action!

Resilience is based in positive psychology and incorporates other factors such as optimism and positive emotions. Resiliency is not a trait that only some people have but is instead a set of behaviors, thoughts, and actions that one can take during times of distress. The best part is that resiliency can be built. A few ways to build resilience are:

Build your connections.

Have strong relationships and connections with understanding people who can support you during difficult times.

Invest in your health and well-being.

Make sure to take care of your mind, body, and spirit with healthful techniques.

Explore your purpose.

Transform large goals into smaller ones, take advantage of classes or opportunities that help you to discover yourself, or find time to help others.

Embrace healthy and positive thoughts.

Keep perspective about the present moment, accept the changes happening around you, learn from past experiences, and look toward the future with hope.

Seek help early and often.

Reach out to family, friends, or professionals when you need help either physically or emotionally during a challenging time.

Jack Malone retires

<Tagline>Congratulations!</Tagline>

Jack Malone is retiring from DoIT AV Services. When he arrived on campus on September 10, 2001, this was going to be "just a job," but it turned out to be much more. Jack became an informal mentor to countless student employees, many becoming lifelong friends, visiting over a decade after graduation. He supported instructors, and installed AV systems and digital signage all over campus. It is virtually impossible to have not benefited from his handiwork, which also saved the campus tens of thousands of dollars. His proudest achievement was the work he performed with Student Disability Services, creating custom AV solutions to give challenged students the best in-classroom experience possible. He has made an important and lasting impression on his coworkers, clients, and the campus community, and will be missed greatly. We wish him the best!
