This CDCs guidance on Halloween activities is helpful to people of all ages! Also, Autumn is a good time to safely get outdoors and engage in healthy activities such as hiking, kite flying, walking, bike riding, and apple picking, just to name a few.

If you are showing signs of “Pandemic Fatigue” you are not alone. Here is an article that shares some helpful insights on how to deal with pandemic fatigue and burnout. Keep sticking to the precautions, Retrievers! We can do this!

Protect Yourself with a Seasonal Flu Shot

University Health Services (UHS) has a limited supply of seasonal flu vaccine remaining after last week’s campus flu clinic. Flu shots are available by appointment only at UHS on the ground floor of Erickson Hall for students, faculty, and staff approved to be on campus. We strongly encourage this vaccine during the COVID pandemic. Please see this CDC webpage for more information, and call UHS at 410-455-2542 to schedule your appointment. In addition, you can visit the UHS flu shot page for off-campus locations in the Catonsville-Arbutus area offering flu shots. Remember to call ahead to ensure the location you plan to visit has vaccines available.

Students: Participate in the Wake Forest Wellbeing Assessment

Although classes and activities at UMBC are mostly held in virtual spaces during these unique times, the wellbeing of our students is more important than ever. UMBC is participating in the Wake Forest Wellbeing Assessment. Students, by completing the assessment you will help us to better understand your needs and how we can be supportive. Check your UMBC email for the survey link. Forty students who complete the assessment will be randomly selected to receive a $25 virtual UMBC Bookstore gift card.

UMBC Together

Visit the UMBC Together website for recent social media posts and the UMBC Together myUMBC group for information on upcoming events.

The Hill-Lopes Scholars Program and Jess and Mildred Fisher College of Science and Mathematics at Towson University present Rita Colwell, Ph.D. as she shares stories from her new memoir, "A Lab of One’s Own: One Woman’s Personal Journey Through Sexism in Science."

“A Lab of One’s Own” documents Colwell’s journey through six decades in science, from sexual harassment in the lab to obscure systems blocking women from leading professional organizations or publishing their work. “A Lab of One’s Own” shares the sheer joy a scientist feels when moving toward a breakthrough, and the thrill of uncovering a whole new generation of female pioneers. Colwell’s writing offers an astute diagnosis of how to fix the problem of sexism in science, and celebrates the women who push back.

Colwell is a groundbreaking microbiologist and the first woman to lead the National Science Foundation, where she served as the director from 1998 to 2004. She is a distinguished professor at the University of Maryland at College Park and at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health.

This event is hosted by the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program at Towson University. Funded by the generosity of Barbara Hill and Ancelmo Lopes, the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program supports women in STEM at Towson University and aims to retain women in the STEM workforce.

Remembering Sharon Doherty-Ritter

It is with deep sadness that we recognize the passing of Sharon Doherty-Ritter, the Director of Management Advisory Services (MAS), on October 12, 2020. Sharon came to UMBC in 2001 as a management analyst in the newly formed Management Advisory Services office, and was named Director in 2014. She received her B.S. degree in accounting from the University of Maryland, College Park and she was a Certified Public Accountant. She obtained her MBA degree from the University of Maryland Global Campus in 2013.

Sharon came to UMBC with a wealth of experience in the fields of accounting and auditing, having worked for a number of years in the private sector and with the State Office of Legislative Audit. Through Sharon’s efforts and expertise, management of internal and external audits, improved internal controls and fraud training, and compliance improvement efforts were significantly strengthened. She also played a major role in the public-private partnerships (P3) for Walker Avenue Apartments and Erickson and Harbor Halls. Erickson and Harbor Halls eventually became the first P3 project in the University System of Maryland to be completely paid off and Sharon was a key player in this achievement.

As a colleague, she demonstrated her expertise and professionalism but was also pragmatic and supportive. She was a well-respected and trusted representative for UMBC with auditors from the State, USM and external granting agencies and foundations. She forged strong working relationships with units across campus and was often sought out for advice.

Sharon will be remembered with respect and affection by the many colleagues who benefitted from her kindly wisdom and generous support. She was always available to help formulate possible solutions or identify next steps. Her commitment and dedication to UMBC was demonstrated on a daily basis and she will be greatly missed.
