In the coming weeks all UMBC faculty, staff and students will have Webex Assistant enabled by default for all Webex Meetings. Webex Assistant is a suite of features that improves meeting management as well as providing auto-captioning and meeting transcription highlights, which provides an important step towards meeting the needs of everyone in the UMBC community. We will send a follow up message once this suite of features is enabled. In the meantime, for more information on Webex Assistant and its capabilities, please visit this site.

In the inaugural episode of the Educause Exchange Podcast, Associate Provost and Deputy CIO Bob Carpenter contributes his views on how UMBC should use analytics and predictive models to support students. In this episode, entitled The Ethical Issues Around Learning Analytics(10 minutes long), he argues that we must not use learning analytics to foreclose opportunities to students. We must act as an agent for the student, supporting them in the pursuit of their educational goals. A student’s “grit” matters for their success; our models won’t always capture it.

COVID-19 Health & Safety

UMBC’s Public Health Dashboard was updated with new data on October 21. The dashboard provides timely data about the prevalence of COVID-19 within our main campus. There were no new positive cases during this reporting period.

How to Report a COVID-19 Case

The COVID-19 Contact Response Team has provided additional guidance regarding COVID-19 case reporting. In the interest of community health and safety, anyone with knowledge that an individual on campus is COVID-19 positive is strongly encouraged to report this information through the COVID-19 Case Report Form. These reports will benefit both the health of the individual involved and the safety of our community. Reports will be handled in a manner consistent with federal privacy regulations.

Update on Spring 2021 Planning

Based on feedback from our community and our desire to reduce screen time, we will not be hosting town halls related to spring planning. We encourage you to submit your questions, concerns, or feedback through our covid19@umbc.edu inbox.

Protect Yourself with a Seasonal Flu Vaccine

University Health Services (UHS) has a limited supply of seasonal flu vaccine remaining after last week’s campus flu clinic. Flu shots are available by appointment only at UHS on the ground floor of Erickson Hall for students, faculty, and staff approved to be on campus. We strongly encourage this vaccine during the COVID pandemic. Please see this CDC webpage for more information, and call UHS at 410-455-2542 to schedule your appointment. In addition, you can visit the UHS flu shot page for off-campus locations in the Catonsville-Arbutus area offering flu shots. Remember to call ahead to ensure the location you plan to visit has vaccines available.

Undergraduate Students: Participate in the Wake Forest Wellbeing Assessment

Although classes and activities at UMBC are mostly held in virtual spaces during these unique times, the wellbeing of our students is more important than ever. UMBC is participating in the Wake Forest Wellbeing Assessment, which has been sent to undergraduate students between ages 18 and 25. By completing the assessment you will help us to better understand undergraduates’ needs and how we can be supportive. Check your UMBC email for the survey link. Forty students who complete the assessment will be randomly selected to receive a $25 virtual UMBC Bookstore gift card.

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

We are concerned about recent events in Nigeria, which have made an already challenging time even more difficult for the many UMBC students, faculty, and staff who have ties there. Over the past several weeks, people in Nigeria calling for the support of their human rights during peaceful protests and demonstrations have been met with escalating, state-sanctioned violence. Most recently, the Nigerian Army opened fire on protesters, killing at least a dozen people.

Violence is never the answer, and UMBC is committed to freedom of expression and social justice for all. We have a strong Nigerian community at UMBC, and we know the campus shares our support for them and for their family and friends. We want our Nigerian community members to know that we are committed to helping them through this difficult and emotional time. We also ask that faculty continue to offer support and flexibility to all students as they balance their academic life with the challenges of this time.

We want to take this opportunity to note the care and support resources available to community members. Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (I3B) staff are available to community members and student organizations in need of support. Please email i3b@umbc.edu. Students can also contact International Education Services at ies@umbc.edu or +1(410)-455-2624. Students in Maryland can call the Counseling Center to obtain remote counseling services at +1(410) 455-2472 on weekdays, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. The after-hours support line is +1(410) 455-3230. Students outside of Maryland can contact the Counseling Center for brief crisis consultation and referrals.

Cold weather is coming, and the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery's popular curbside pickup service for books and equipment is moving indoors!

Beginning November 1, Library staff will be happy to serve you at the main entrance to the Library building. During advertised curbside hours, the left-side front exterior door will be unlocked. Just look for the "curbside" signs, call us at 410-455-2354 when you arrive, and you will find your requested materials on a table inside the vestibule. Grab your stuff and away you go!

The Library & Gallery, including the Atrium and Retriever Learning Center, remain closed to users for the fall semester for the safety of our staff and users.

Instructions for placing requests can be found on our Curbside Pick-up Service page: https://library.umbc.edu/curbside-pickup.php. You will receive an email when your item is available (excludes A/V equipment from the Digital Media Lab), at which time you may use our online calendar to schedule your pick-up appointment.
