A "Snapshot" on Exhibit Development

<Tagline>By Jessica Riley, Special Collections graduate assistant</Tagline>

In the fall of 2019, I started my graduate program at UMBC and my new job as a graduate assistant for UMBC Special Collections. I was elated that as a first-year student I was tasked with curating an exhibit for our Special Collections Reading Room. I saw the opportunity as a way to become more familiar with our collections and also to have more experience with curation. In October of 2019, I began the exhibition development process which started with formulating it, through to plans for installation, and finally this moment to reflect on the process as a whole.

How it Started

Exhibits of course start in a number of ways. For this exhibit, our curatorial team knew we wanted to highlight the UMBC Photography Equipment Collections, however we did not know what narrative we wanted to tell or what objects would go into the exhibit. We did know we had many interesting cameras that did not make it into the large display of cameras that users of the Special Collections Reading Room are accustomed to seeing.

Existing photography equipment case in UMBC AOK Special Collections Reading Room.

Picking Objects

I initially spent many days in the large Special Collections storage room in the Library’s lower level. Most days I wore a mask (pre-COVID mask wearing) because I noticed many of the older cameras have chemicals that are beginning to break down inside of them. I slowly found the equipment I wanted to feature, mostly based on their appearance and always with the reading room audience in mind. One of the two display cases is about personal cameras, featuring a whole line of cameras that were designed for consumer audiences and fans of pop culture, from Mickey Mouse to spy gear (hi, 90s kids). I think people will enjoy seeing the unique cameras I selected.

Kodak Petite (c. 1930s). This camera came in the Kodak Coquette set which featured this blue art deco camera, a makeup compact mirror, and a lipstick.

The second of the two display cases in the reading room will have projectors, all of which I originally chose based on their aesthetics. My favorite here is the magic lantern which is from circa 1600s and used candlelight to project images from glass slides.

A typical day in Special Collections. I took this picture one week before the pandemic shutdown in March 2020.

Time for Installation

By late February, I was ready to begin pulling the objects from the lower level of the library and bringing them to the reading room. I thought it was time to install the exhibit. Up to this point, I had only seen everything coming together in a Google Drive folder with images of each piece. I drafted removal forms for all of the objects and those forms will be placed in the former storage locations. The equipment which I had pulled stayed on a cart and was moved to safe keeping until installation can be done. Unfortunately, I was not able to install the exhibit before the campus closure in early March. I am now working remotely and hope to install the exhibit this coming Spring before I graduate.

Staging cameras and visualizing groupings on top of an archival storage box before installing shelving into the case.

Reflection

What this specific exhibit experience has shown me is that sometimes the job of professionals in cultural institutions is to provide knowledge of what that institution has in their care and the possibilities for further research by their patrons. I would argue that the overarching narratives of the two cases are not profoundly deep. Rather, I hope this selection of cameras and projectors will show our patrons the equipment we have, how three-dimensional objects can be used to tell narratives, big or small, and perhaps spark memories in those that remember using them.

Look out for the exhibit in the reading room display cases when Special Collections safely reopens to the public!

Jessica Riley is a second-year master’s student in UMBC's Department of History with a track in public history. Jessica's favorite part about working in Special Collections is that there is always a new topic to learn about from fanzines to daguerreotypes.

UMBC Responds to Rise in COVID-19 Cases

As COVID-19 positivity rates continue to rise across the nation and in Maryland, we are writing to update you on campus health and safety plans. Thanks to your collective efforts, the UMBC campus remains a comparatively safe environment. While our positivity rate remains low, we are managing a recent increase in positive cases and suspected exposures. We also know that we are not immune to the wider infection trends. We appreciate the dedicated work of the staff supporting the affected students and colleagues. We wish a speedy recovery for those who are COVID-19-positive, and good health for those who are being monitored in quarantine.

We want to assure you that the COVID-19 Planning Coordinating Committee is closely monitoring the dynamic public health conditions both on and off campus, as well as guidance provided by the Governor, the Baltimore County Health Department, and the University System of Maryland. At this time, we ask for your cooperation and increased vigilance as we implement several immediate measures necessary to protect campus health and academic continuity, and also carefully consider any further actions we may take if the situation worsens.

For students currently on campus

We strongly urge resident students to take a COVID-19 test prior to the Thanksgiving break. Resident students have received information about free on-campus COVID-19 testing scheduled for November 16﹘18. Please register now for available slots. For commuting students, free testing resources are available here. Students who will return to campus after the holiday, including those in Walker Avenue apartments, are required to be tested and have received information on how to do so.

If your classes are currently fully remote and you do not have symptoms, we want to make it possible for you to return home ahead of the Thanksgiving break. Residential Life will be sharing updated information on early check-out processes.

In order to reduce risk, the dine-in option at True Grits will end effective tomorrow, November 12. We are also reconsidering planned in-person events, with a goal to either move to a virtual platform or defer to a later and safer time. Athletics will discontinue practices for out-of-season sports effective November 13.

For faculty and staff approved to be on campus

Both the Governor and public health officials have recommended telework as a way to reduce community spread. We are already in line with this mandate, with most faculty and staff working remotely. For our employees who have been approved to be on campus, we remind you to continue with health and safety measures, including mask wearing, social distancing, and symptom tracking. If you have concerns about your work arrangement, please reach out to your supervisor.

For faculty who are teaching in-person classes, please consider that some students who have been attending in-person classes may be interested in participating remotely for the last few classes before the Thanksgiving break. Any flexibility you can provide to support our students during this time is greatly appreciated.

Holiday safety reminders

We know that many of you face difficult decisions about whether to gather with family during the upcoming holiday. Please review the Governor’s new actions related to gatherings and travel. We strongly advise against out-of-state travel and large gatherings where physical distancing is not possible.

Please remember that it may take up to two weeks to develop symptoms and that you are capable of transmitting the virus to others even if you are asymptomatic. This period before and during the Thanksgiving break is a critical time to be vigilant in your mask use and your efforts to restrict your contact with others.

Finally, we want to make you aware of Maryland’s new COVID alert system. You may have received a notification today on how to join this important new resource available for contact tracing. You can learn more here.

Thank you for all that you have done so far to keep our campus and community safe and healthy. We deeply appreciate your continued vigilance and the care and concern you have shown each other. We know that this is a stressful time, and we will do our best to communicate regularly as the situation evolves. You can reach us with questions or concerns at covid19@umbc.edu.

Four Opportunities to Stay Engaged After Election 2020

Casting Your Whole Vote means working to build community and address challenges collectively every day, not just on Election Day. Here are four timely opportunities for members of the UMBC community to stay engaged and work together:

STRiVE is a five-day immersive experiential learning program for undergraduate students held off-campus during Winter Break. STRiVE’s intensive and engaging curriculum supports participants in developing critical thinking, leadership, community engagement, and cultural organizing skills. Well over 99% of the hundreds of UMBC students who have participated in STRiVE said they would recommend the experience to a friend. STRiVE 2021 will take place virtually from January 11-15, 2021. The application is due THIS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH at 11:59pm.

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a five-day immersive learning experience held during Spring Break. Participants think critically about social issues in Baltimore and develop skills in problem solving, community building, and storytelling. They meet with and learn from community partners, government officials, and scholars to develop a sophisticated understanding of local resources and challenges and lay the groundwork for long-term collective civic action. Alternative Spring Break 2021 will take place virtually from March 15-19, 2021.

After the Election: A Conversation with UMBC Legislators is an opportunity to engage with the District 12 legislators who represent UMBC and the surrounding communities in the Maryland General Assembly. This program provides an opportunity to talk in small groups about important issues, and learn about pathways for anyone, independent of their major or role on campus, to contribute to the civic health of our community. After the Election will take place virtually on November 18, 2020 from 5:00 - 7:00pm.

The Civic Courage Journaling Project creates space for individual reflection on personal experiences with important civic implications. UMBC student, faculty, staff, and alumni journal bearers respond to prompts from the Center by creating entries in their journals and discussing them at monthly journal bearer gatherings. The next Civic Courage Journaling Project gathering will take place virtually on Friday, November 20th from 3:15 - 4:45pm. Sign up any time by sending an email indicating your interest to civiclife@umbc.edu.

Honoring Veterans Day

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

In observance of Veterans Day today, we honor those who have served as members of the United States Armed Forces during times of war and times of peace. On behalf of the UMBC community, we acknowledge all of the ways that veterans contribute to our campus community and the broader society. They are our students, faculty, staff, alumni, family members, and friends.

We are particularly proud of our veterans who are finishing their degrees during or after their service while balancing family commitments and a career. Their perseverance and commitment to academic growth inspire all of us. We are fortunate to host a Naval ROTC program, which offers courses in leadership, national security policy, U.S. military affairs, and more. We also work alongside our neighbor, the United States Naval Academy, and other military services through research partnerships focused on cybersecurity and related topics. And, many veterans and active duty military personnel have advanced their careers and education through certificate programs offered at UMBC Training Centers.

UMBC #9 in U.S. in Voting Pledge Competition

UMBC finished in the top 10 nationwide in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge voting pledge competition for 2020. ALL IN encourages college students to pledge to vote to promote accountability, based on evidence that when people make public pledges, they are more likely to follow through. More than 600 colleges and universities participate in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. To view the leaderboard with the top 25 institutions in the U.S. by number of pledges, click here and scroll down.

The UMBC community will learn how many students actually voted in the 2020 national election when we receive our report from the National Survey of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) sometime next year. In the previous presidential election in 2016, 85 percent of UMBC students were registered to vote, and 75 percent of those actually voted. UMBC’s overall turnout rate in 2016 was 25 percent higher than the national average for colleges and universities (source: NSLVE).

UMBC’s Cast Your Whole Vote campaign, organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life in collaboration with many departments, student organizations, and campus leaders, encouraged members of the UMBC community to learn about issues, engage in civil conversations, and contribute their time and talent to building a better world on Election Day and every day. Cast Your Whole Vote programs (all virtual) included Dinner with Friends (facilitated dialogues), Change Maker Dinners (facilitated small group conversations with local leaders and activists), Debate Watch events, Post-Debate Lunch & Learn programs, and Election Night Extravaganza (a community gathering to watch and make sense of election returns).

Students, faculty, and staff members trained as facilitators have organized more than 20 post-election Together Beyond November programs to help participants renew their connections and support each other in this challenging time. The Center for Democracy and Civic Life is continuing to work with campus partners to support opportunities for civic learning and sustained engagement, including the STRiVE leadership for social impact retreat (apply by 11/15), Alternative Spring Break (apply by 11/23), and a conversation with Maryland legislators who represent UMBC (11/18; RSVP required).

Resolved but Not Rejoicing: A Reflection after Election 2020

by Charis Lawson, '21, English

Civic Literacy Intern, Center for Democracy and Civic Life

My relief is tainted. When I first realized that Joe Biden was probably going to be President of the United States, I had an overwhelming sense of accomplishment that was almost immediately mellowed. In the back of my mind, I kept hearing Biden’s voice from the video clip that swirled around the internet where he stated, “If you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black.” This message to the black community is disheartening because plenty of candidates claiming to represent us have failed to deliver on their promises. Their rhetoric has implied that we shouldn’t ask questions, just be satisfied with the lesser of two evils. The black community is often left with the bare minimum, and then asked why we aren’t happy. Yet as the weekend progressed, everyone’s joy seeped into my own soul, giving me a sense of warmth that I hadn’t felt in years. I wanted to hold on to the feeling of togetherness and accomplishment of the people around me.

While I am happy with the outcome of the election I am not ecstatic. This election did not diminish my resolve to work for positive change. I want people to know that the fight for justice isn’t over, and want to be sure they are not lulled into a false sense of safety just because we have someone who knows how to speak coherently leading us. While of course, it goes deeper than that, I am afraid that by comparing Biden to someone I have would describe as incompetent we place him on a pedestal he doesn’t deserve.

I am motivated to continue to have deep conversations with peers and those with more knowledge than me about the problems that have plagued this country since its founding. I am determined to find unity amidst the chaos because I do not believe that all people who disagree with me are filled with hate. For me, that means starting locally because that is all that I feel equipped to handle. At this point, I have met all of the representatives from my Maryland General Assembly district and talked to them about the policies they see as important and am in the process of educating myself on those issues so I feel more equipped to form my own opinions.

I hate the idea that one party is inherently moral and the other is inherently evil. Both parties have work to do. Figuring out exactly what I want to accomplish is evolving with the knowledge that I gain from my representatives and my own research and discussion with my peers. I am determined to work toward the world as I imagine it: the world as it could be.
