Remembering Dr. William Rothstein

<Tagline>Founding UMBC faculty member</Tagline>

We were deeply saddened this weekend to hear of the passing of William Rothstein, a beloved founding faculty member of UMBC. He was 83. We will remember him as one of the most exemplary professors we have known—a caring colleague, teacher, social scientist, and friend.

Bill was an emeritus professor of sociology at UMBC who devoted his career to our students. After earning his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1965, he joined the UMBC faculty in 1966, when classes first began at the university. He was promoted to associate professor in 1969 and to professor in 1988. He continued to teach as an adjunct faculty member following his retirement, and he was a strong advocate for adjunct faculty during his career.

He touched the lives of countless students through the courses he taught, as the director of the master’s program in applied sociology, and in other ways. He was known as a thoughtful and compassionate mentor, and he remained connected with many of his students for years after graduation as they progressed in their careers.

UMBC alumni have shared wonderful memories with us. Bill was a season ticket holder for men’s and women’s basketball and was often cheering in the stands or eating pizza with graduate students while watching a game. One former student shared gratitude that Bill was able to attend her wedding, and another remarked that what he learned from Bill continues to shape his own teaching today.

Service also played a large role in Bill’s work and life. In addition to serving as graduate program director and acting chair, he served on nearly every standing committee in his department. His tenure at UMBC saw astounding growth for UMBC’s Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health.

As a researcher, Bill published widely on the history of medicine in the United States from a sociological perspective, including four books. He explored topics related to medical policy and public health, and mentored student researchers in developing new scholarship on these topics. He also published several articles in the Baltimore Sun and other outlets to increase public awareness of important health-related topics.

He continued to write during his retirement, publishing a new book in 2018 on coronary heart disease in the 20th-century United States, and more recently researching the COVID-19 pandemic. He was fascinated by the role of UMBC alumni in developing a COVID vaccine and encouraged us to stay positive about the future, even in challenging times.

A virtual funeral service will be held this Thursday, December 10, at 12 p.m., available through this link, with a number of UMBC colleagues and students speaking about his life. A virtual shiva gathering at 7 p.m., through this link, is another opportunity for friends and students to remember Bill.

Honoring his commitment to students, Bill’s family asks that contributions in his memory be made to the Graduate Student Emergency Fund that he established at UMBC. Donations can be submitted online or by check (payable to the UMBC Foundation, with Graduate Student Emergency Fund in the memo line, mailed to the UMBC Foundation, 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore, MD 21250) to continue Bill’s legacy.

COVID-19 Planning: Academic and Testing Updates

<Tagline>Spring week one will be conducted remotely (Jan 26 - Feb 1)</Tagline>

Key Points

A mostly remote spring semester will begin January 26.

All courses will be fully remote for the first week.

Residential student move-in will continue on schedule.

COVID-19 testing will be required for students, faculty, and staff approved to be on campus.

Dear UMBC Community,

As we near the end of the semester, the COVID-19 Planning Coordinating Committee (C-19 PCC) wants to provide important updates on our upcoming semesters. Due to the continued rise in COVID-19 positivity rates in Maryland and across the nation, as well as predictions from public health experts that this surge will continue through the winter, we continue to work to de-densify campus through remote work and education.

Spring Semester Schedule

The first day of classes is January 26. The first week of instruction will be conducted remotely.Face-to-face and hybrid classes that were scheduled to meet in person will now meet online on Tuesday, January 26 through Monday, February 1.

This will allow time for students who are traveling to campus from out-of-state or internationally to quarantine and for professors to communicate with students about when and how face-to-face classes will meet. During the spring semester, approximately 10 percent of courses will be hybrid or face-to-face. Residential student move-in will continue on schedule, January 22 - 26.

Campus Access

Research and Creative Achievement will continue in its current mode. Other faculty and staff who are not currently working on campus will need to apply or reapply to return to campus. We plan to streamline this application process and will share additional details before the start of the semester.

On-Campus Safety Measures

All faculty, staff, and students who are approved to be on campus after the holiday break will need to submit a negative COVID-19 test result prior to arriving on campus. We are currently exploring options for conducting free testing on campus. You will also be able to submit a negative test result from an off-campus provider. We hope to provide more details on testing by the end of December.

On-campus safety measures will continue, including daily online symptom tracking. The C-19 PCC is working on processes for closely monitoring compliance. Individuals who are not in compliance are placing the health of others at risk and may lose their access to campus. You can check your compliance status in your myUMBC profile.

Winter and Summer Session Updates

The winter 2021 session is entirely online. Summer 2021 sessions will be conducted primarily online, with the same approval process as for the fall and spring semesters for instructors who are requesting courses with face-to-face components.

We understand that the present situation is dynamic, and we will continue to monitor health conditions on campus and across the state so that we can be prepared to make changes to our spring semester plan as needed.

We appreciate your continued commitment to the health and safety of our community and thank you for your efforts that allowed this semester to be a successful one. We wish our students success in their finals and end-of-semester projects. We also want to encourage any community member in need of help to reach out. Academic and personal support resources are available on the Retriever Ready website.

As we enter the winter season, we want to review and update UMBC’s policies and procedures regarding weather-related closures and delays. Please keep in mind that even if it becomes necessary to close the physical campus for inclement weather, online classes will still be held and employees should continue to work remotely. When campus is closed, face-to-face classes will not meet in person. Students may receive additional guidance from their instructors on alternative arrangements.

Be sure to use official sources of information, such as E2Campus text alerts, campus email, and the UMBC homepage, for the most complete, accurate, and up-to-date information about any delays or closures. We also strongly recommend you review our inclement weather and emergency closing policy to understand how a delay or closure impacts campus schedules, activities, and events. You can also see UMBC's snow removal plan to learn our process and prioritization for clearing roads, parking areas, and walkways.

We ask that you use personal judgment when traveling to and from campus. Weather and related road conditions are not the same in every area where students, faculty, and staff live. Consequently, the decision as to whether it is safe to travel must ultimately rest with each individual.

Faculty should arrange a system for communicating with their students should it be necessary to cancel class when the university is open. Employees that are scheduled to work on campus but cannot report due to local road conditions should communicate directly with their supervisor.

We hope that you and your families stay safe, healthy, and warm this winter.

Subject Guide for Researching African American Photographers

<Tagline>By Jacqueline Ellis, Special Collections graduate assistant</Tagline>

UMBC Special Collections has recently revamped the guide to Researching African American Photographers and invites you to check it out. We have added information on two Baltimore photographers within the collection, Cary Beth Cryor and Irving Henry Webster Phillips Sr. Other changes included the addition of more articles, books on specific photographers, and books on compilations of photographers. There are plenty of examples of research sources and a lot more to find in the included databases, outside resources, and the article searches.
