COVID-19 Health & Safety

• UMBC’s Public Health Dashboard was updated with new data on February 24. There were five new positive on-campus cases during this reporting period. The campus positivity rate is 0.2 percent and we currently have no residential students in quarantine or isolation. We are so grateful for our community’s commitment to health and safety.

Testing and Tracking during Spring Break

• Testing groups will receive specific instructions for spring break via myUMBC. In general, if you will be on campus during the break (residential students, researchers, etc.) you should continue to test. Testing requirements are waived for individuals who will not be on campus during the break. All community members who are approved to be on campus must continue to symptom track the entirety of the break.

Reminder: Travel Restrictions Remain in Effect

• The Governor’s emergency order requiring Marylanders to limit all travel to essential purposes only remains in effect. All Marylanders who travel outside of Maryland and individuals who travel to Maryland must either obtain a negative COVID-19 test result or self-quarantine for 10 days. This applies to travel to/from all states/territories except Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. 

After-Hours Student Health Assistance

• Did you know that University Health Services and the Counseling Center have an After-Hours Support Line? If you have mental and/or physical health concerns outside of regular business hours and wish to speak with someone, please call 410-455-3230. This support line is available to support students experiencing a mental health crisis, physical health issues, sexual assault, or relationship violence.

• The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can help prevent suicide. The Lifeline provides 24/7 free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals. The Lifeline can be reached at 1-800-273-8255.

UMBC Together

On February 25th, at 12:00pm-1:00pm, George Derek Musgrove, associate professor of history, will present and discuss the conception and design of Black Power in DC, an innovative and interactive approach to presenting history. He will be joined by Anne Sarah Rubin, professor of history, and Lee Boot, director of the Imaging Research Center, to discuss the project’s creation and its relationship to the digital humanities landscape. A question and answer session with the audience will follow.

Musgrove launched Black Power in DC, an online ”StoryMap” created in collaboration with the Imaging Research Center (IRC), in February 2021. His goal was to represent the evolution of this influential social movement over space and time through interactive geographic maps, historical photographs and text. The project builds from his book, Chocolate City: A History of Race and Democracy in the Nation’s Capital, co-authored with Chris Myers Asch and published in 2017.
