Dr. Robert Deluty Publishes his 61st Book

Dr. Robert Deluty, associate dean emeritus of the Graduate School, has published a new book,
"Plainly Aware." In his review, Dr. Ronald Pies writes, "In this, his
sixty-first book, Robert Deluty fulfills Betty Smith's admonition
(quoted at the beginning of the book) to 'Look at everything always as
though you were seeing it either for the first or last time.' For
Deluty, this means looking at the joys and sorrows of life through a
child's eyes, even as the seasoned poet sees intimations of mortality.
As with his previous work, this splendid new collection shows Deluty as
playfully serious and seriously playful, balancing his trademark puckish
humor with his deep insight into the human condition. In so doing,
Deluty reveals--in Diana Gabaldon's words--how 'existence is balanced on
a perfect point, like the moment of change between the dark and the
    light.'" And in
his appraisal of the book, Dr. George Northrup states, "All poets love
words, each in their own way. Robert Deluty is the grandmaster of
ceremonies at a never-ending language conference, graciously and
enthusiastically introducing his myriad guests, helping them discover
the many unexpected ways they belong together, and prompting them to
strike up creative, madcap conversation. They have, as you will, dear
reader, a wonderful time in each other's company."

<Tagline>Addressing Food Insecurity Among College Students In Marylan</Tagline>

Congratulations to our very own GES Intern, Sarah Jacobson, who is presenting her research project at URCAD. During her work with Retriever Essentials, Sarah researched food insecurity on college campuses in Maryland. We are so proud of you Sarah!

"In collaboration with the UMBC food pantry, Retriever Essentials, I am conducting geospatial analyses and generating online webmaps that assess the pervasive issue of food insecurity among Maryland college students, to recommend how institutional food pantries can implement operational best practices to effectively meet student need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Current research states that approximately one-third of all students at two- and four- year institutions face food and housing insecurity while earning a degree. Through geospatial analysis on food and poverty rates in Maryland, my research illustrates the connection between federally recognized poverty areas and food insecurity rates to which institutions, based on their location and institution type, are most likely to provide food resources to their students. We identified campus pantry points-of-contact, and conducted a semi-structured survey to understand campus pantry operations and services in more detail, along with assessing how analyses on how COVID-19 has impacted a pantry’s ability to provide the resources needed by their students. Retriever Essentials and I plan to utilize the data as part of a comprehensive effort to assess the availability of food and basic needs resources on Maryland college campuses, and what campuses can do to better connect students with these resources."

Caring and Allyship

Dear Community Members,

Systemic racism, police violence, hate crimes against minority groups, and mass shootings continue to plague communities across the U.S. Against this backdrop, news reports are flooding Americans with words and images from the trial of the former police officer charged in the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, and we are now preparing to learn the verdict.

The social and political divisions of the past year, coupled with the stresses resulting from the ongoing pandemic, feel overwhelming for many of us.We recognize the myriad emotions that members of our community are experiencing, including worry, trauma, sadness, loss, confusion, anger, and fear. We are deeply saddened by reports that our students are afraid they could be victims of or witnesses to police violence. These emotions are valid, and we are committed to providing support and responding with compassion.

So many across our country have worked for years to bring true justice to our society and to find ways to come together, heal, create real change, and move forward as a more united nation. The events of the past year have resulted in a groundswell of support for decisive action to dismantle the structural racism, discrimination, and other forms of systematic oppression and marginalization in the wider world, and on our own campus.

We encourage all members of our community to remain committed to hearing and understanding different perspectives as we seek to move forward together. UMBC is a community in which we inspire one another to be our authentic selves, reach our full potential, and make an impact. Our commitment to inclusive excellence and shared governance builds individual and collective capacity for listening to and learning from diverse perspectives—skills that are essential for addressing the disparities and differences that have persisted in our country for far too long.

We invite all members of our diverse UMBC family to connect with each other in the spirit of mutual respect, dignity, and understanding. Please consider these resources to support your conversations and share them with your fellow Retrievers:

But first, we ask that you, the members of our community, help build the buzz and get messages out there to celebrate and welcome students when they arrive.

Our ask of you:
We’d love for you to create a message welcoming new students to our community and then share that message on social media using #RetrieverNation in the days leading up to April 30 (since May 1 is a Saturday this year). Videos are particularly appreciated, but photos with written messages are great, too. And, where possible, we especially encourage using platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok, as these platforms are more likely to reach new students.

Want a little more context?

We hope these messages will be especially meaningful for new students in a time when we're all fatigued by Zoom life and a little disconnected from one another -- so many of our admitted students have never even had the chance to come to campus. You know what it's like to be a part of our community and you can help our newest Retrievers feel like they're already part of it, too.

The Undergraduate Marketing Team

P.S.
