Verify Your COVID-19 Vaccination ASAP

This week we awarded our Vaccinate. Verify. WIN! student grand prize, a $500 scholarship, to a senior computer engineering major; and our faculty/staff grand prize, a free parking pass, to a Student Affairs staff member. Congratulations to all the winners during this incentive program and thank you to everyone who has verified their vaccination.

Reminder: The deadline for commuting students to report their vaccines is August 20. Residential students received an earlier deadline to ensure they could move in. Report your vaccination ASAP.

Employees: Look for New Electronic Timesheet Reporting Fields

Starting on August 15, 2021, employees will notice new reporting fields for work locations and schedules on electronic timesheets. More details here.

Reminder: Fall 2021 Employee Parking Permits

Faculty and Staff: Don’t forget to complete your Payroll Deduction/Parking Registration Form for the 2021-2022 academic year no later than August 13. Parking permits are required beginning on August 31. More information here.

2021 Welcome for underrepresented graduate students!!!

This event, hosted by PROMISE AGEP program volunteers from across the University System of Maryland, will be held virtually on August 18, 2021 from 1 PM - 3 PM.

If you are looking for a sense of community and you self identify as a member of an underserved community please attend! Welcome to our PROMISE family!

What is PROMISE?

PROMISE is the Maryland AGEP, initially founded in 2003 by the National Science Foundation, this program has been serving students from underrepresented backgrounds to aid them to successfully complete their degrees. During the academic year we host events, seminars and workshops to boost professional development of students to better prepare them for a successful career.

About the Welcome event

This program focuses on connecting graduate students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds currently working towards their higher education degrees (masters, doctoral degree, professional studies). We aim to provide guidance and tools to ensure your success in completing your degree and create a sense of community during your tenure in grad school.

We have Dr. Canessa Swanson and Dr. Alexis Williams who will be sharing some insights about their graduate experience! You will be paired with peers from the same areas of research from different institutions and you will have the opportunity to meet staff and administrators from your institution.

The event is funded in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR), Division of Human Resource Development (HRD). UMBC Transit will be providing its customary routes 7 days a week for the Fall 2021 semester. Operational hours are as follows: Monday – Friday 6:30am – 11:30pm, Saturday – Sunday 8:00am – 11:30pm.

Frequency varies per route – Please see the Transit website for specific hours and route schedules. The bus locator system (Transit Tracker) is available for determining the real-time location of specific buses on route. The app is also used to send updates and messages to the ridership.

Health and Safety

UMBC’s COVID19 safety protocols are in effect aboard buses and at bus stops. At this time, facial masking will still be required aboard buses and at stops.

Your ID is Your Ticket to Ride

Your campus ID is required to be presented and swiped upon boarding. You will be swiping your card to validate enrollment and to create a ridership report per route. No visitors are permitted on Transit buses at this time.

Dear UMBC Community,

As we continue our transition back to our vibrant campus community, we are excited to welcome many of our faculty and staff back to the physical campus on August 9. After a year of being mostly remote, we have remained united, strong, and continued to show grit as we overcame challenges and obstacles. Picking up your Welcome Home door tag from the PSS Welcome Back Table, Human Resources lobby, Campus Life Suite, or the Bookstore; or emailing us to grab a stack for your office.
Attending the PSS & Non-Exempt Staff Senate (NESS) Staff Cookout, an in-person BBQ and hybrid raffle, on Friday, August 13 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

We’ll also be giving away the grand prize in our Vaccinate. Verify. WIN! campaign: a free parking pass! All employees with a verified vaccination or approved exemption have been automatically entered. Stay tuned on social media for our drawing.

A Note on Safety
We know that the public health situation is evolving and we continue to make health and safety arrangements for our campus. We remind you that, at this time, masking continues to be required indoors at UMBC. Please also maintain physical distancing of at least three feet whenever possible. Large rooms will have reduced capacities posted and overall we have made an effort to reduce density in indoor spaces. Please be mindful of distancing when considering in-person meetings and continue to rely on virtual meetings as much as possible.

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Saturday, August 7th and Friday, August 13th. While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the downtime of key services. The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.

Saturday, 8/7/2021 between 8am and 10am(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):

myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality
The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable
Wiki will be unavailable

Friday, 8/13/2021 between 5pm and 10pm (most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):

Access to Cyrus (legacy) email (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)

All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched

All HFS (afs) servers - gl.umbc.edu home directories will be offline
Between 9:15pm and 10pm only: Certain software licenses will be unavailable (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica).
Between 9:15pm and 10pm only: The web hosting environments (virthost) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)
Between 5:00pm and 6:30pm only: LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance. During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable. Account authentication and logins will not be affected.
