Dear UMBC Community,
As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Human Resources wishes to remind you of thealternative work arrangements available to staff. While these arrangements were originally published as a pilot for the fall semester, they are now officially extended to apply to the Spring 2022 semester. As supervisors/department heads think through the best way to provide services to our community, we ask that you consider what alternative work arrangements will work to support your team, and the community members you serve.
Alternative work schedules can allow for flexibility for a variety of roles and schedules. When evaluating the feasibility of any schedule, consideration must be given to meeting customer needs, maintaining camaraderie and connections across campus and within teams, and ensuring that any work performed off site is compliant with UMBC’s and the Division of Information Technology’s security protocols.
Final approval for employees requesting telework will continue to be granted at the college or division level. Requests for fully remote work must receive final approval from Human Resources and should continue to be very limited. You may continue to submit requests for Fall 2021until December 15, 2021. The available form now allows you to submit a request for Spring 2022, you will select the appropriate term at the end of the form. Spring telework agreements start January 1, 2022 and end June 30, 2022. All employees requesting telework or remote work will need to complete the spring form.

We are pleased to extend these arrangements into the spring semester in order to recognize the incredibly hard work of all in our community and to support our employees as they navigate continued challenges with self care, family care, and other work/life balance considerations.

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Friday, November 12th, Saturday, November 13th and Friday, November 19th. While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the downtime of key services. The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.

World renowned scholar Professor Angel Lin will speak about what it means to teach English as a second or foreign language in a globalized world still dominated by the historical processes of imperialism and colonialism and the cultural and psychological aftermath of such processes. She will describe what is needed to interrupt the working of the effects of these processes at the micro and macro levels of critical analysis and intervention in TESOL.

Finding and Creating Community Away from Home is a facilitated conversation among international students and students who have studied abroad or intend to do so. The conversation will focus on how participants have been or hope to be able to form meaningful connections and make contributions in their temporary communities (geographic, campus, etc.).

Current TESOL MA students and recent alumni are welcome to an information session for U.S. State Department opportunities to teach English overseas – the Fulbright U.S. Student English Teaching Assistant Program and the English Language Fellows Program. Alumni of these program will be in attendance to speak to their experiences!

This panel will provide with a brief overview of the recent history of Afghanistan as it relates to the current situation, starting from the 1979 invasion of the Soviet Union, the 1989 withdrawal and consequent civil war, the 1995 takeover of the Taliban, their defeat in 2001 by the U.S. and coalition force, followed by the 20 years of ongoing war in Afghanistan from which the U.S. just withdrew in late August. Afterwards, the panel will begin an open discussion about current issues facing Afghanistan today.
