Over the next few months, we will be performing maintenance work at the UMBC Aquatics facility. The project will include resurfacing all three pools (outdoor 50-meter pool, indoor 25-yard pool, and diving well), as well as maintenance to the indoor pool pump room.

Outdoor pool replastering will begin on March 9, 2022, and will take approximately six weeks, weather permitting, to complete. We plan to have the outdoor pool up and running by May 1, 2022.

The indoor pool project, including the 25-yard pool and the diving well, will begin on May 8, 2022, and will take six to seven weeks to complete. We plan to have the indoor pools up and running by June 30, 2022.

Weather and other unforeseen issues may delay these projects.

We are excited to announce that UMBC is participating in a research study to understand the experiences of informal (unpaid) student caregivers. An informal caregiver is someone who provides assistance with activities such as transportation, shopping, finances, bathing or dressing to a spouse, family member, friend or neighbor. Researchers are interested in understanding what challenges students face while being a caregiver and what resources are most helpful to reach academic goals. You will receive an email in the next few weeks containing a link to the short survey. The survey should take less than five (5) minutes to complete.

Student caregiver participation will contribute greatly to our understanding of caregivers and help us identify new resources to assist students achieve their academic goals while being a caregiver.

The ConnectionCorps is a Center for Democracy and Civic Life initiative through which UMBC students learn to foster democratic participation and authentic connection among participants in the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's workshops and programs (e.g., Change Makers Dinner, Changing Maryland, and Dinner with Friends). ConnectionCorps facilitators participate in bi-weekly and ad-hoc training sessions to build community, develop skills, and prepare to facilitate.  

The overall time commitment is approximately 30 hours in each of the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. For specific dates, see the application.

ConnectionCorps facilitators receive a $400 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 096-08) on their transcripts for spring 2022. They also receive a graduation cord to recognize the contributions they have made to the education and growth of their peers. The Shriver Center coordinates PRAC 096-08 and the distribution of graduation cords.

All undergraduate students are invited to apply. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in Center for Democracy and Civic Life workshops or programs.

  • Currently enrolled: You must be actively enrolled as a full-time student for the Spring 2022 semester.

  • COVID Compliant: Students must be in compliance with UMBC COVID-19 expectations, this includes the booster requirement. Check your COVID Compliance Card on myUMBC.

  • Good Financial Standing: If you have an outstanding balance greater than $250 you will not be eligible to complete the application until you clear your bill with Student Business Services. 

  • Complete a “Commuter Pass” with a current resident between March 1, 2022 and March 31, 2022.

If you meet the above criteria you will be issued the Housing Selection Application which you will need to submit by April 1, 2022 at 5PM.  Please review the 2022-2023 Housing Selection Guide to learn more about the Housing Selection process.

Housing Interest Application

The Housing Interest Application will be made available to all commuters on April 6, 2022. Students who complete the Housing Interest Application will be added to the housing wait list.  Unlike the Housing Selection process, students on the housing waitlist are not guaranteed housing.  

If you are on the waitlist you will be contacted via UMBC email if and when a space becomes available. A housing offer would be sent electronically to the student’s UMBC email as early as mid-May. Students who accept their offer by completing the license (contract) and reservation fee are guaranteed housing for the upcoming license term. Offers are made based on the availability of space. Students will remain on the waitlist until we are able to make them an offer.

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a six-day immersive learning experience organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life. ASB participants explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore. Each small group focuses on a specific topic, but the groups also consider overlaps among their issues. ASB groups work with community partners, elected officials, and scholars to identify pathways to long-term local engagement.

Past ASB groups have explored challenges and solutions relating to housing, access to nutritious food, education, and health care, criminal justice, and a variety of other issues in Baltimore. Applicants can choose to explore these topics or propose new ones.

Each leader works with a co-leader and as a member of a leadership team organized and trained by Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff during weekly meetings in the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. Together the leaders develop plans for a holistic, empowering ASB experience for all participants during the week of UMBC's Spring Break, March 19 - 24, 2023. 

The overall time commitment is approximately 100 hours over the course of the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. For specific dates, see the application. 

Leaders receive a $1,000 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 096-08) on their transcripts for winter and spring 2023. Leaders also receive a graduation cord to recognize the contributions they have made to the education and growth of their peers. The Shriver Center coordinates PRAC 096-08 and the distribution of graduation cords.

All undergraduate students are invited to apply. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in ASB or a similar multi-day experiential learning program.
