The Obama Foundation is seeking applications for the Voyager Scholarship, also known as the Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service. The Voyager Scholarship is a two-year program for students in their junior year at U.S. colleges and universities who are interested in pursuing careers involving public service and community engagement. Voyager Scholarship recipients gain experience and support from a strong network of fellow scholars and experienced leaders, including through invitation to an annual public service summit.

Voyager Scholarship recipients will receive up to $25,000 per year in financial aid during their junior and senior years in college. The program includes a $10,000 stipend and free Airbnb housing to support a work-travel experience between recipients’ junior and senior years of college, as well as a $2,000 travel credit every year for ten years ($20,000 total). Upon graduation, recipients become members of the Obama Foundation’s global community, which connects them with resources and programming for further engagement.

To be eligible to apply, students must plan to enroll full-time during the fall 2022 semester in their junior year of study at an accredited four-year college or university in the U.S. (such as UMBC).
Update on Alternative Work Arrangements

<Tagline>and Telework Approval Process</Tagline>

Dear Faculty and Staff,

The Alternative Work Arrangements section of the Human Resources website has been updated to include revised telework and remote work agreements, a sample scheduler, a hybrid workplace presentation, and frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Existing telework and remote work arrangements end June 30, 2022. and must be renewed. The telework approval process through DocuSign now allows areas to include up to four approval levels (if necessary) and to designate either a defined or undefined end date. The supervisor/department head, vice president, or dean will provide instructions regarding the required approvals in your area. The approval process for remote work will remain the same -- review and approval by the Provost, vice president or dean, and the Chief Human Resources Officer.

We encourage staff, supervisors, and department heads to visit the alternative work arrangements site to learn more.

Our existing telework/remote work policies will continue to apply. Thank you for your patience as we continue to develop processes and policies for out-of-state employees.

Questions regarding alternative work arrangements may be submitted to Sherrell McNamara (mcnamara@umbc.edu) or Kelly Coleman (kellycol@umbc.edu).

Nikki, along with previous interns and student assistants, did a great job with this large collection of manuscripts, convention materials, correspondence, and more!

Do you believe that anyone can write a book? The highly acclaimed science fiction and fantasy writer, Lawrence Watt-Evans believes that all you need is a good idea, a keyboard, and some writing skills. According to him “there is no idea so stupid or hackneyed that a sufficiently-talented writer can’t get a good story out of it.” Whether you believe this or not, Lawrence Watt-Evans has recently donated a large amount of his manuscripts, proofs, science-fiction convention memorabilia, and other miscellaneous materials to UMBC’s Special Collections.

His first attempt at writing science-fiction occurred at the young age of eight and after surviving twelve years of school, he followed in the footsteps of father and grandfather and attended Princeton University. Watt-Evans never finished his degree and in 1980, he published his first novel The Lure of the Basilisk with Del Rey Books. He went on to write three sequels and the highly popular Ethshar fantasy series, which was initially created for role-playing games.

However, Watt-Evans’s imagination and talents extend beyond the genres of fantasy, science-fiction, and horror. His personal favorite is his story Nightside City about a 24th century detective. Alongside more than a dozen novels and over one hundred short stories written under the name Lawrence Watt-Evans and his pseudonym Nathan Archer, Watt-Evans's work also ventures into the realm of DC and Marvel graphic novels and comics.

His novels have been translated into seven languages and have been enjoyed worldwide. In 1987, he was nominated for a Nebula award and one year later, in 1988, he received the Hugo award for best short story from the World Science Fiction Society for “Why I Left Harry’s All-Night Hamburgers” which was first published in Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine. The story is about a young man, who works at a greasy spoon diner near Sutton, West Virginia that acts as a popular hang-out for travelers from alternate Earths. After hearing about these far-off wonders, the young man decides to travel through the multiverse himself.

The magazine won the International Horror Critics Guild Award in 1995 for best horror magazine, which was awarded at the 1996 World Horror Convention. And, according to Lawrence Watt-Evans, Deathrealm #27 was banned in Canada for “disturbing” cover art.

Summer Session 2022 COVID-19 Updates

As we complete our spring semester, we want to share an important safety update for faculty members and students participating in the first Summer Session of 2022.

We will begin the first summer session with masks required in all in-person classes, instructional labs, and performance spaces being used for academic programs, including spaces where in-person examinations are held.

The decision to implement this mandate is based on current state and local conditions as reflected in the CDC’s recent elevation of the Community Risk Level for Maryland, and for Baltimore County, from low (green) to medium (yellow).

We will continue to review state and local conditions weekly. If current prediction models remain accurate, it is expected that Maryland, and Baltimore County, will move back to CDC’s low risk level sometime this summer. At that time we will consider relaxing this masking requirement.

Free KN95 masks will continue to be available at locations across campus.
