HS-POWER is open to students majoring in a broad spectrum of homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as well as </span><span><a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.dhs.gov/strategic-planning&amp;source=gmail-imap&amp;ust=1667433612000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3Bqriva0YS7J0APCTPpcmz" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>DHS mission-relevant research areas</span></a></span><span>.</span></p><p><span>As a participant in the HS-POWER Program, you will participate in quality research experiences with federal research facilities and other Homeland Security STEM focused entities nationwide either onsite or in a virtual environment. This experience will provide you with a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent and skills in a variety of settings within the DHS enterprise. Additionally, you will establish connections with DHS professionals that facilitate long-term relationships between yourself, researchers, DHS personnel and research facilities.</span></p><p><strong><span>Benefits</span></strong><span></span></p><p></p><ul><li><span><span>     <span> </span></span></span><span>Stipend:</span></li><ul><li><span>Undergraduate students receive a stipend of $750 per week;</span></li><li><span>Graduate students receive a stipend of $950 per week.</span></li></ul></ul><p><span>·<span>      <span> </span></span></span><span>For students participating onsite:</span></p><ul><ul><li><span>Travel: Travel reimbursement for inbound and outbound expenses up to $1,000 total for participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site.</span></li><li><span>Housing Allowance: A housing allowance of $400/week is provided to participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way, from their assigned hosting facility and who are paying for housing while onsite. </span></li></ul></ul><p><span><span>     <span> </span></span></span><span>Due to COVID 19, some students may be required to participate virtually. <Title>Graduate Assistant Opportunity - Qualitative Research</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Full-Time Graduate Assistant (20 hrs/week) in Program Evaluation</span></p><p><span> in the Office of Graduate Student Development &amp; Postdoctoral Affairs </span></p><p><span>Position Responsibilities</span><span>: We seek a full-time graduate assistant (GA) to join our team and assist with multiple initiatives to enhance the recruitment, retention, and advancement of underrepresented undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs at UMBC and across an Alliance of University Systems. Specifically, we are seeking a GA who can assist with program evaluation for a cluster of related programs, such as PROMISE (supporting underrepresented graduate students in STEM), the AGEP PROMISE Academy Alliance (diversifying biomedical faculty through recruiting and training underrepresented postdocs) , and RISE-UPP (Reimagining STEM Equity Utilizing Postdoc Pathways, which expands the PROMISE Academy Alliance to more institutions and disciplines). The GA will provide administrative and/or technological support to the Internal Evaluator who is working on these grant-funded educational activities. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods will be used to collect and analyze data for program evaluation, implementation, and post-program reporting.</span></p><br><p><span>Qualifications:</span><span>  You must be self-motivated, independent, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks at once.  Experience and ability to work with numerical data, statistical software (such as SPSS, Qualtrics, SAS, NVivo) and Microsoft Office products is required. This position also necessitates strong written communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to meet tight deadlines. Many graduate programs encourage their students to publish to obtain an advanced degree, but it is usually at the discretion of the research advisors to guide students through this conundrum.</div><div><br></div><div>How do you start the process of writing a publication? What are impact factors and how do you decide if your data is impactful enough to be submitted to a particular publication or journal? How do you get your publication fee covered?</div><div><br></div><div>To help students through the publishing conundrum, we invited a STEM faculty panel at UMBC from our COEIT and CNMS colleges to discuss publication-related topics. <Title>SEA CIRTL Fellows Program</Title>
<Tagline>Teaching Opportunity and Summer $</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><span>We are piloting a new opportunity for graduate students in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) that are interested in being a </span><a href="https://cirtl.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">CIRTL</a><span> Fellow for the </span><a href="https://ixl.umbc.edu/summer-enrichment-academy/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) at UMBC</a><span>. SEA provides one-week camps for middle and high school students on the UMBC Campus. These camps help kids to stay engaged, have fun learning STEM, and get excited about UMBC.</span><div><span><br></span></div><div><span> These SEA CIRTL Fellows will develop and implement a 1-week course for the SEA in an engineering topic of their choice with guided mentorship in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023, and implement the course with SEA in summer of 2023. Fellows will be required to attend a variety of sessions that help them solidify course ideas, learn about teaching approaches that are accessible and engaging for high school and middle school students, and plan their course. This will all count toward a CIRTL certificate, which is a nationally recognized teaching certificate! Upon teaching the course in Summer 2023, Fellows will be paid a minimum of $700/week for 1 or 2 weeks, with an opportunity for more depending on enrollment for the course. </span><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Note: Courses are run as half day camps for a week (5 days), and Fellows will be able to choose two weeks of these four options : June 26-30, July 10-14, July 17-21, July 24-28.   </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Please complete this form by October 18, 2022.</span></div></div><div><span><a href="https://forms.gle/BeTT4rZsfdLQu3TVA">https://forms.gle/BeTT4rZsfdLQu3TVA</a></span></div></div>
