Casting Your Whole Vote in Election 2022 Midterm Election Day Tomorrow 11/8 Dear UMBC Community,

UMBC has a strong tradition of active participation in elections, and has been named one of America’s Best Colleges for Student Voting. As Maryland and the nation prepare for Election Day, I am thrilled to see how members of our community are continuing and strengthening this tradition. 

If you are a Maryland resident and plan to vote using a mail-in ballot, you must request one by Tuesday, November 1, and place it in a dropoff box by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8. This year, Maryland residents can vote on campus by depositing completed mail-in ballots in the official Board of Elections dropoff box located in The Commons beside the Campus Information Center desk.

If you are not already registered to vote in Maryland, you can still register in person at early voting locations and on Election Day. You also can check your registration status. Once you register or confirm your registration, you can make a pledge to vote and help UMBC rise on ALL IN’s national leaderboard. Please also consider staffing a polling station as an election judge, a paid position that involves providing a much-needed service to our state. 

I also encourage you to attend upcoming election-related programs. Election Night Extravaganza is a UMBC tradition that brings our community together to watch, discuss, and celebrate election returns in real time. Together Beyond November is a guided conversation program in which participants will reflect on the election outcomes and envision the road ahead.

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life always encourages members of our campus community to “cast your whole vote” by committing fully to building strong, inclusive, just communities in which everyone can thrive. The Innovation in Buildings (IBUILD) Graduate Research Fellowship is now accepting applications through December 2, 2022 (5:00 PM EST).

What will I be doing? You will get to advance your graduate research by receiving research and educational support to conduct innovative research at your home institution in an area with demonstrated relevance to building energy efficiency. To ensure an impactful fellowship, you will also gain professional development, mentoring, networking, and support for internship opportunities.

Why should I apply? In addition to advancing your graduate research, you will 1) enhance your education and training in building technologies fields; 2) increase your marketability in these disciplines; 3) gain access to top scientists in the building energy efficiency field; and 4) gain insight into research and career opportunities through your research experiences.

Where will I be located? The IBUILD Fellowship is designed to support research at your home college or university. IBUILD Fellows may be required to take occasional trips to the BTO office or a national laboratory, when applicable, to meet program representatives.

The details:

You will receive a competitive stipend of $35,000, an allowance to offset the costs of health insurance up to $16,000, research travel and materials up to $12,000, and limited tuition allowance up to $25,000.

Fellowship will be awarded in 12-month increments based on an annual review of research progress and sustained alignment with designated BTO research areas.

You must be a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident and be enrolled or intend to enroll as a full-time doctoral or master's graduate student at a qualified program requiring a research thesis/dissertation at an accredited U.S. college or university by September 1, 2023 with a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale.
