Anyone on the job market knows about the importance of the résumé. This is typically an employer’s first look at who you are and what you bring to the table. That’s why it’s crucial that you can make your résumé stand out from the rest.
- Lead with the most relevant information. This refers to both categories and individual bullet points. You want to lead with the most important information on the top and left-hand side of the page, as well as within sections.
- Your personalized LinkedIn URL. At the top of your résumé with the rest of your contact information, you can add your LinkedIn URL. Need a personalized URL that’s not full of random numbers and letters? Go to your profile, and on the right side you’ll see an option to edit "Public profile & URL.” If you need assistance with this, schedule a LinkedIn appointment with a career advisor.
- Course projects. If your résumé is lacking in terms of work experiences, you can include projects from your classes. Just list the name of the project and/or course and include a few bullet points highlighting what you did. Remember: coursework experiences do count as work experiences!
- Relevant coursework. By listing relevant courses, you can demonstrate that you have foundational knowledge in key areas related to the job you’re applying for. You can also show that you’ve learned specialized skills in a specific area of study.
- Skills as categories. These can be comprised of hard skills (e.g., programming languages, statistical analyses, data analysis), soft skills (e.g., communication, leadership, problem-solving), and transferable skills (e.g., customer service, research skills, presentation skills).
- Extracurricular activities. Adding these to your résumé can demonstrate leadership potential. They also can help highlight transferable skills that you otherwise may not be able to show on your résumé.

UMBC is proud to host the 2024 America East Men's & Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th. This marks our return as hosts since 2018, and our student-athletes from Track & Field and Cross Country are thrilled to compete on home turf.
Invite family, friends, coaches, and student-athletes from all sports to come out and support our talented athletes!
Volunteers are needed to assist with setup on Friday, May 3rd, and to help run all championship events throughout the weekend. Your help and support are greatly appreciated in making this event a success!

NOMINATIONS RE-OPEN FOR THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL POSITIONS
NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON APRIL 25TH
The Graduate Student Association invites nominations for the following leadership roles:
Treasurer: As the Treasurer, you will be entrusted with managing the financial resources of the Graduate Student Association. Your responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing the budget and financial transactions of various committees within the GSA.
- Ensuring transparent and accurate record-keeping of all financial activities.
- Collaborating with committee heads to develop budgets and financial plans aligned with the goals of the GSA.
- Providing regular financial reports to the GSA executive board and members.
- Implementing sound financial practices and policies to safeguard the association's assets.
GAAC Chair (Graduate Assistant Advisory Committee): To be eligible for this position, the nominee must be a graduate assistant. The GAAC Chair serves as a representative and advocate for graduate assistants within the GSA. Key responsibilities include:
- Advocating for the interests and concerns of graduate assistants to the relevant administrative committees and decision-makers.
- Facilitating communication between graduate assistants and the administration to address issues related to employment, benefits, and working conditions.
- Organizing and leading meetings and initiatives to gather feedback from graduate assistants and address their needs.
- Facilitate Meet and Confer sessions.
LCC Chair (Legislative Concerns Committee): The LCC Chair is responsible for leading the Legislative Concerns Committee, which focuses on monitoring and addressing legislative issues affecting graduate students. Responsibilities include:
- Center for Democracy and Civic Life (CDCL), Office of Government Relations and Community Affairs (OGRCA), Neighborhood Relations Group (OGRCA), external coalitions
- Provide communications updates on current legislation of interest to the graduate student population
- Promote election registration and voting among eligible UMBC students
- Promote UMBC graduate student political participation at the local, state, and federal level.

- Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
We hope you will consider one of these positions yourself and share these opportunities with your student government officers and the student community at your institution. Officers’ duties and election processes begin on page 4 (Section III) of the USMSC Bylaws.
Those interested in elected or appointed positions should complete the USMSC Officer Nomination Form by Monday, April 29th. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor, but expressing interest in advance via the nomination form gives the representatives more time and information about you.
