Every graduate student needs to know the guidelines for responsible conduct of research. Depending on the discipline, students need to haveadditional training regarding rules and regulations for conducting research using animals or humans (including surveys) and details related to ownership of work. All doctoral students and all master's students should be prepared to learn about "Responsible Conduct of Research" training.

Our seminar will cover:

1) IRB Training

2) Responsible Conduct of Research Training

This seminar includes a "Work" session where graduate students and postdocs can work on their training modules so that they will be certified for responsible conduct of research in all disciplines.

Lunch will be served.

Our Annual International Thanksgiving Dinner is an event where international students from colleges and universities in the Maryland area come to enjoy a Thanksgiving Meal in a very fun, festive, family environment. This program was started in November of 1995 to provide a great representation of Thanksgiving to international students who don’t have a family or home where they can enjoy this American tradition. It is an American Thanksgiving with International food.

This year is our 20TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL THANKSGIVING DINNER and, for the first time ever, we’ll be raffling off a free MacBook Air to the students who attend the dinner. You want to be a part of the excitement. There will be free food, games and prizes at this dinner. We also provide transportation to any student who needs transportation on campus.

If you’ll be bringing in a guest, please let me know and, also if you know of international clubs and events coming up soon, inform me of the event because we’ll love to come and speak about this dinner. This week is the beginning of UMBC's Homecoming Celebration!

What is Homecoming?

Homecoming is an old tradition in the United States. It is a celebration that happens every year in late September or early October. This celebration is called Homecoming because the school invites alumni, or students who have graduated, to "come home" and celebrate the history and traditions of their old school.

These traditions include sports games, dances, rallies, parades and live music.

UMBC has a wonderful Homecoming schedule that begins this week, Monday, October 5 to Saturday, October 10.

Join the campus for this much-anticipated Homecoming tradition featuring the legendary UMBC Bonfire! Come early for great food & giveaways!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8

Talent Show

9 p.m., University Center Ballroom

Witness UMBC’s finest performers as they take the stage at this annual competition. Singers, dancers, comedians, athletes and many more compete to be crowned UMBC’s most talented.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9

Big Prize Poetry SLAM!
6-8 p.m., Performing Arts and Humanities Building Atrium

Slam BIG and Win BIG at the third annual Poetry Slam hosted by the English Department! You won’t want to miss this event! A 1st prize of $200 will go to the winner of this dazzling high-energy slam. 2nd and 3rd prizes, too, for students and alumni sharing their original work, judged by students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Retriever Rally
9 – 10:30 p.m., Retriever Activities Center (RAC)

Pack the RAC and show your Retriever Pride! Tons of freebies, food, t-shirts, games, and the introduction of this year’s basketball teams. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10

Comedy Show Social
5 - 7:30 p.m., Flat Tuesday's, The Commons

Before the laughs begin, come in and meet up with friends in our campus pub. We will have discounted pricing on beverages for comedy show attendees that are 21 and older who come in with their tickets.

Crab Feast
5 – 8 p.m., Commons Terrace

It’s not a party without delicious crabs, great friends, and entertainment. Back by popular demand, this Crab Feast includes an all-you-can-eat buffet including Maryland blue crabs; homemade Maryland crab and cream of crab soups; beef, turkey, and ham carving stations; BBQ chicken, Italian sausage, pulled pork, baked ziti, corn on the cob, potato salad and much more. A cash bar will also be available. Entertainment will be provided byLast to Fire, a Rock/Soul/Funk band comprised of UMBC alums and current students Jason Palumbo ’13, Evan Ponter ’12, Jon Constantinides ’15 and Alex Appelbaum ’15,

Get your tickets by Friday, September 25 for a discounted rate of $40 per person and $20 per child (ages 4-11). After September 25, registration will increase to $45 for adults. Seton Hill French Fair (Free)

Come to Seton Hill’s 6th free, fun, funky French-themed fair that celebrates Seton Hill as Baltimore’s historic French Quarter. Dance, listen to music, see art on the fence, a Flea and Craft market, a puppet show, good French-style food and drink, our signature French maid race, games and activities such as Petanque, Hula hooping, sack races, face painting, kids build the Eiffel tower, and a Toddlers tour de France and Grand Prix.

We counted the votes from last week's poll and Jungle Safari was the winning theme! On Thursday, we will begin making decorations for the front desk.

Are you creative? Do you want to help us decorate the front desk? We will have two times on Thursday when students can help us create decorations: during lunch hour, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm; 2) during the Conversation Cafe, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
