<Title>Call for Applications: UMBC Global Learning Lab</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>This is a <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/facultyaffairs/posts/151660" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">repost from Faculty Affairs</a>.</p><p>Dear UMBC faculty:</p><p>We are thrilled to announce the call for applications for the <strong>UMBC Global</strong></p><p><strong> Learning Lab</strong>, a joint initiative of the Office of the Provost and the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) that aims to develop a faculty learning community dedicated to increasing student access to global learning opportunities. The Global Learning Lab is a cohort-style, semester-long program that provides a framework for faculty to exchange best practices and innovative models for expanding access to global learning opportunities over a series of four workshops. This program is made possible with funding from the Office of the Provost. </p><p>All full-time faculty—tenured/tenure-track, non-tenure-track—and adjuncts (minimum of six semesters at UMBC) are invited to <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/facultyaffairs/posts/151660/9f8/cf314aba09c26f8bf03a1cb968efddcc/email/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSfxnUCAUhMPs9kr6cpXU0t-EwkIxwvRsFHcIcMHfYnfNLTSOQ%2Fviewform%3Fusp%3Ddialog" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">apply</a> for the Fall 2025 cohort. Faculty accepted into the Lab must commit to attending each of the workshops below and producing one project to present at the conclusion of the lab. Faculty will receive a <strong>$1,500 professional development stipend to support their intended project. </strong>The funds will be transferred to the fellow's home department upon successful completion of the Fall 2025 Global Learning Lab. Applicants <strong><u>must</u></strong> discuss their intended project with their department chairs prior to applying. </p><p><br></p><p>Workshop #1: Friday, September 12 from 10 AM - 1 PM</p><p><strong>Internationalization of the Curriculum Through Curricular Mapping </strong>will focus on identifying the ideal term(s), course(s), location(s)/partner(s) for students to participate in a global learning experience.</p><p>Workshop #2: Friday, October 3 from 10 AM - 1 PM</p><p><strong>Developing a Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program </strong>will focus on building a study abroad program using best practices to support student learning and the development of skills, attitudes, and experiences that promote global and cultural competency.  </p><p>Workshop #3: Friday, November 7 from 10 AM - 1 PM</p><p><strong>Global Learning for All: Virtual Exchange </strong>will focus on how to foster opportunities to develop cultural and global competencies in an existing course through virtual exchanges known as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL).</p><p>Workshop #4: Friday, December 5 from 10 AM - 1 PM</p><p><strong>Global Learning Lab Project Presentations </strong>will provide an opportunity for faculty in the lab to present their global learning project (i.e. curricular mapping for their department, faculty-led study abroad program proposal, or COIL course).</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Important</strong></p><p>The ideal faculty cohort will represent the diversity of UMBC programs and a diversity of intended projects. <Title>OISS Staffing Updates</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>We wish to inform you of recent staffing changes within the Center for Global Engagement’s  Office of International Students and Scholars.  </div><div><br></div><div><u>Staff Departures</u></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Dave Anguish</strong>, Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars, has accepted an attorney role in the Chacón Center for Immigrant Justice at Maryland Carey Law. He is taking intermittent leave until his last day at UMBC on August 01. A search for the next permanent Director is underway and anticipated to conclude before the end of August. </div><div><br></div><div>Additionally, <strong>Victoria Sung</strong>, International Student &amp; Scholar Advisor, will be leaving to pursue graduate studies at the University of Michigan this fall. Her last day at UMBC will be June 30th.</div><div><br></div><div>Please join us in wishing Dave and Victoria all the best with their future plans and thank them for their service to UMBC!</div><div><br></div><div><u>New Appointments</u></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Sarah Cockcroft</strong>, Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services, was recently appointed Acting Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars. </div><div><br></div><div>We are also welcoming two temporary International Student &amp; Scholar Advisors, <strong>Mariia Usova</strong> and <strong>Lauren Mister</strong>, to assist during this time of transition. Special shout out to one of our Study Abroad Alumna, Ada Glaser, whose college experience, including her time in South Africa, was </span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/umbc-news-magazine/posts/149588" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>spotlighted</span></a><span> by UMBC! Ada is an emerging social worker with a passion for youth development.</span><span> We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you and the rest of the Class of 2025!</span></p><p><span>If you studied abroad, are graduating next week, and you still need to pick up your graduation cords, stop by UC 207 any weekday between 8:30-4:30 before your ceremony. </span></p><h3><span>Record-Breaking Year for Study Abroad Participation:</span></h3><p><span>As we wrap up the semester, we also want to pause and celebrate all of our students who decided to make study abroad part of their college career. </span><span>We experienced record-breaking student participation in study abroad programs in Academic Year 2024–2025</span><span>, with approximately 231 students spending time studying outside of the United States between Fall 2024 and Summer 2025. This cohort of students represents the highest enrollment in study abroad in the university's history. An additional 74 students traveled abroad for non-credit global learning experiences, such as research, conferences, and service learning. These bright minds are bringing UMBC to the world, and the world to UMBC. Later this summer I am going back to where it all began, Finland, celebrating my host father’s 90th birthday in August. </span></p></li><li><p><span>Alicyn: I am traveling with Professor Julie Oakes to Japan as a program assistant on the UMBC Faculty-Led: Art and Power in Japan program! </span></p></li><li><p><span>Sam: I will be traveling to Colombia to visit family!</span></p></li><li><p><span>Devayani: I’m graduating next week, wrapping up an incredible year as a Graduate Assistant at the Education Abroad Office! As an international student, my two years at UMBC have been nothing short of an amazing adventure — filled with growth, learning, and unforgettable moments. Working with this wonderful team has been one of the highlights of my journey here. I’m leaving with a box full of beautiful memories from this office and the UMBC campus. As for my travel plans, I’m heading to California to check off two major bucket list items: my very first Coldplay concert and a trip to Yosemite! Woohoo! What better way to celebrate graduation than that?</span></p></li><li><p><span>Kayla: I will be going to Dalaman, Turkey, with my friends from my exchange in Finland!</span></p></li></ul><p><span>We hope you all have a wonderful summer!
