We wanted to quickly share these external two week fully-funded overseas site visit opportunities that were recently discovered:
Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) offers these seminars that help faculty and administrators at US
minority-serving institutions (like UMBC) and community colleges gain international experience with the aim of developing and improving international courses, curricula, and teaching materials at their home institutions.

Global Security, Intelligence, and Int'l Affairs Event!
A unique opportunity for students interested in global security, intelligence and international affairs!
What: UMBC is a member of the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), which is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service and U.S. organizations operating abroad. OSAC's focus is to promote cross-sector cooperation on global security, intelligence and international affairs. This year, OSAC will allow a limited number of students to attend the Annual Briefing.
Who: OSAC includes representatives from academia, aviation, cybersecurity, energy, faith-based organizations, government, hospitality/tourism, insurance, international development, law enforcement, media, military, private security contractors, etc. The event will feature Andrea Mitchell, NBC Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent, as well as Oksana Markarova, Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S, as keynote speakers. Other speakers include:

- Roger Carstens Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs
- John Voorhees, USAID Director of Security
- Gentry Smith, Assistant Secretary Diplomatic Security Service U.S. Department of State

- Ellen Tannor, Executive Director OSAC U.S. Department of State
- Stephen Marquette, Deputy Assistant Director, Office of Counterintelligence, U.S. Department of State
- Ryan Renuart, RSO Khartoum U.S. Department of State
- Pete Short, Ball Corporation Director Corporate Security
- Erik Antons, Whirlpool Corporation Chief Security Officer
- Nick Lovrien, Meta Chief Global Security Officer
- Lisa Oliveri, National Democratic Institute Director of Global Risk Management, Security, and Operations

Where: The Annual Briefing will take place at the U.S. Department of State's Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
When:
November 15 - Full day (8:30AM - approximately 5PM) of presentations, panel discussions, breakout sessions, and networking.
November 16 - Half day (8:30AM - approximately 12:30PM) of presentations, panel discussions, breakout sessions, and networking
Student Eligibility:
1. Must demonstrate interest in national security, intelligence, international affairs or other related fields;
2. Must be either a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident;
3. Must be enrolled as a junior, senior or graduate student; and
4. Must apply by Oct. 14., 2023.
Logistics: Attached is a more detailed formal invitation. Space is limited, so please apply by the Oct. 14 deadline. If your application is approved, you must respond to OSAC to confirm your participation within 48 hours of being notified.
Cost: There is also no registration fee. OSAC will not reimburse travel expenses, but CGE will cover the costs of transportation to attend the event for any students accepted to attend.

Engage with the program theme of the Spirit of Place by exploring Welsh landscapes, history, and culture in ways that influenced and inspired the literary works that came from that region.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
ENGL 475 will help students cultivate an enhanced awareness of, and greater facility in evoking landscape and culture in their writing, such that this will inform their future work, whether at home in their own communities or abroad.

- Multi-day excursion to Ty Newydd with tours of a Criccieth castle and Blaenau slate mine
- Visits to sites of historical and cultural significance, including an excursion to Teifi Farmhouse Cheese and National Wool Museum, Rhiannon Welsh Gold Centre, and an optional hike or bus tour

ART 216 / ART 329 will provide you with first-hand experiences with Italian visual culture in all its forms through classroom lecture, on-site visits, and international field research. You will learn about the historical and cultural background of the sites visited in conjunction with the work of relevant contemporary artists.

Social & Ethical Issues in Information Technology in the UK

COURSE DESCRIPTION
CMSC 304 will engage students in academic, experiential, and intercultural learning in and about the United Kingdom. Students will focus on comparing information technology laws, policies, and expectations between the US and the UK or the European Union.

Intercultural Communication in Morocco & Spain

Explore the cross-cultural experiences in Morocco and of the living reminiscences of the Arab presence in Al-Andalus, which is the modern-day Iberian peninsula.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
MLL 300 & MLL 305: Students will learn the cross-cultural influences shared between Morocco and Spain that still exist today. Those who already completed MLL 305, will enroll in MLL 300 worth 6 credits. Graduate level students may enroll in MLL 600: Topic - Morocco (3 credits) and MLL 600: Topic - Spain (3 credits) for a total of 6 credits.
PROGRAM DETAILS
- MLL 300 & MLL 305 or MLL 600
- Overnight stay with an Amazigh (Berbers, indigenous people of North Africa) host family in the Atlas Mountains in Fez, Morocco
- Visits to sites of historical and cultural significance, including Batha Fez and Dar Batha Museum in Morocco; El Castillo (the castle with the Moorish wall) in Marbella, Spain; and a ferry ride from Tangier to Tarifa (Spain)
- Experiential learning activities including culture, language, and flamenco dance workshops

International Education Week (IEW): OCA Mocha Art Call
Share your international experiences with UMBC during IEW!
OCA Mocha and UMBC's Center for Global Engagement are partnering to host an exhibit in conjunction with
International Education Week (IEW) that centers around UMBC community members'
experiences with living, studying, or working in an international or intercultural environment. IEW is an annual event sponsored by the U.S. Departments of Education and State that celebrates the benefits of international education and study/education abroad programs.
Artists are invited to submit work created using any medium. All artists, regardless of location or experience, are encouraged to submit their best work.

Important Dates:
1. The deadline for submitting your work for consideration is October 15, 2023 at 11:59
p.m. Eastern time.
2. Notification of selections will be emailed by October 19, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. eastern
time.
3. All artwork must be dropped off at OCA Mocha by October 27, 2023, at 6 p.m. Eastern
time.
