    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>We are looking for a small cohort of students to participate in UMBC’s Intercultural Engagement Prep program in Spring 2025. This program is designed to grow your intercultural competency and skills. </span></p><p><strong><br></strong></p><p><span>This program is open to:</span></p><ul><li><p><span>International students</span></p></li><li><p><span>Future or returned study abroad students</span></p></li><li><p><span>Students interested in applying to the Peace Corps after graduation</span></p></li><li><p><span>Students who have an interest in preparing for other international or intercultural experiences</span></p></li><li><p><span>Students who want to prepare themselves as global citizens in a multicultural world </span></p></li></ul><p><strong><br></strong></p><p><span>As a participant in the Intercultural Engagement Prep pilot program, you will:</span></p><ul><li><p><span>Meet other globally-minded students at UMBC;</span></p></li><li><p><span>Develop your critical analytical skills;</span></p></li><li><p><span>Increase your cultural self-awareness and c</span><span>ritically reflect on your own unconscious bias;</span></p></li><li><p><span>Develop strategies to improve your intercultural communication and how you’ll apply it in your future career;</span></p></li><li><p><span>Recognize cultural differences, commonalities, perceptions, power and privilege dynamics, and how they can lead to conflict; and</span></p></li><li><p><span>Understand the importance of intercultural dialogue and intercultural citizenship competencies for fostering social justice.</span></p></li></ul><p><strong><br></strong></p><p><span>This non-credit/no-fee course, PRAC 103 (course # 6928), will meet twice in the Spring 2025 semester at a mutually agreeable time, but the majority of the course is accessed through asynchronous learning. Students will be required to attend two globally themed events or activities and will also have independent assignments to complete in Blackboard. </span><span>Upon successful completion of the program, participants will earn two digital badges</span><span>titled </span><a href="https://badges.umbc.edu/portfolio/increasing-cultural-self-awareness/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Increasing Cultural Self-Awareness</span></a><span> and </span><a href="https://badges.umbc.edu/portfolio/reinforcing-intercultural-dialogue/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Reinforcing Intercultural Dialogue</span></a><span>. </span></p><p><br></p><p><span>You can register for the course under PRAC 103 and course number 6928.</span></p></span></div>

<Title>UMBC Global Learning Lab</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Dear UMBC faculty:</div><div><br>We are thrilled to announce the <strong>UMBC Global Learning Lab</strong>, a joint initiative of the Office of the Provost and the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) that aims to develop a faculty learning community dedicated to increasing student access to global learning opportunities. The Global Learning Lab is a cohort-style, semester-long, program that provides a framework for faculty to exchange best practices and innovative models for expanding access to global learning opportunities over a series of four workshops. This program is made possible with funding from the Office of the Provost. <br><br><span>All full time faculty—tenured/tenure-track, non tenure-track— and adjuncts (minimum of six semesters at UMBC) are invited to </span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/facultyaffairs/posts/145914/9f8/8c7d559915fb5a79647ec62366ce9b3d/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSdHdYt5gJwPzDpgbmohp-aGhR60jAqLQUdzQeTDNypSjC3WGA%2Fviewform" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">apply</a> for the Spring 2025 cohort. Faculty accepted into the Lab must commit to attending each of the workshops below and producing one project to present at the conclusion of the lab. Faculty will receive a <strong>$1,500 professional development stipend to support their intended project. </strong>The funds will be transferred to the fellow's home department upon successful completion of the Spring 2025 Global Learning Lab.  Applicants <strong><u>must</u></strong> discuss their intended project with their department chairs prior to applying. </div><div><br>Workshop #1 - Friday, February 14 from 10 AM - 1 PM<br><strong>Internationalization of the Curriculum Through Curricular Mapping </strong>will focus on identifying the ideal term(s), course(s), location(s)/partner(s) for students to participate in a global learning experience.<br><br>Workshop #2 - Friday, March 7 from 10 AM - 1 PM <br><strong><span>Developing a Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program</span></strong> will focus on building a study abroad program using best practices to support student learning and the development of skills, attitudes, and experiences that promote global and cultural competency.<br><br>Workshop #3  Friday, March 28 from 10 AM - 1 PM<br><strong>Global Learning for All: Virtual Exchange </strong>will focus on how to foster opportunities to develop cultural and global competencies in an existing course through virtual exchanges known as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL).<br><br>Workshop #4- Friday, May 2 from 10 AM - 1 PM<br><strong>Global Learning Lab Project Presentations</strong> will provide an opportunity for faculty in the lab to present their global learning project (i.e. curricular mapping for their department, faculty-led study abroad program proposal, or COIL course). <br><br><strong>Important</strong><br>The ideal faculty cohort will represent the diversity of UMBC programs and a diversity of intended projects. <Title>Fulbright UK Summer Institutes Information Session</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div>The US-UK Fulbright Commission is pleased to announce its annual competition for its <a href="https://fulbright.org.uk/our-programmes/undergraduate-and-pre-university-programmes/uk-summer-institutes/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UK Fulbright Summer Institutes</a>. Academically talented UMBC freshmen and sophomores of any major with little to no previous international travel experience and/or are first-generation college students are particularly encouraged to apply! Applicants can choose from one of six summer institutes across the United Kingdom with topics ranging from Climate Change to Social Justice in a British context.</div><div><br></div><div>The UK Summer Institutes last between three and four weeks, and almost all costs, including tuition, fees, housing, most meals and airfare, are included. <Title>UMBC Strengthens Transatlantic Ties with the University of Porto</Title>

Her visit from October 14-18 was packed with meetings and tours aimed at fostering collaboration and innovation across research and academic initiatives.</span><span><br></span><span><br></span><span>Highlights included:</span><span><br><ul><li><span>Meetings with leadership in International Education &amp; Global Engagement, Research and Creative Achievement, and Strategic Research Initiatives.</span></li><li>A comprehensive tour of UMBC’s research facilities, including the<span>bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park</span><span>, the Molecular Characterization and Analysis Complex, and the</span><span>UMBC Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building</span><span>.</span></li><li>Engaging sessions with departments in Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Natural Sciences, underscoring the synergies in research between UMBC and the University of Porto.</li></ul></span><span><br></span><span>A huge thank you to everyone who met with Dr. Barros to make her visit impactful and inspiring:</span><div><span><br></span><span>David Di Maria, Ed.D.</span><span>;</span><span>Adam Holden</span><span>;</span><span>Jerome M. <Title>UMBC Teach Abroad: Kanagawa Internship Application Due Nov. 9th</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>The Kanagawa Internship is established based on the Maryland-Kanagawa Sister State program. It is an exclusive/unique opportunity for UMBC students who are studying either Japanese or Teaching English as a Foreign Language. The Japanese Area at MLLI and the Association of Kanagawa Private High Schools collaborate to provide the students with this opportunity.<br><br><strong>Job description: varies depending on the school placement</strong><br><ul><li>Participate in classes and special activities as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT)</li><li>Participate in cultural exchange activities at school </li><li>Conduct tutoring sessions for junior/senior high school students </li></ul><strong>Benefits </strong><br>1) Monthly stipend: ¥100,000 before tax (probably around ¥50,000-80,000 after tax) -&gt; If you finish the internship before the end of a month, the stipend will be calculated per day for that month <br><br>2) Paid accommodation <br><br>Interns’ responsibility to pay the following (amounts are approximate); <br><br>- Apartment: food, utilities, internet<br><br>- Host family: monthly gratitude<br><br>- Dorm: varies at school.
