    <div class="html-content"><div><div><div><div><div><span>The Shriver Center is looking for a cohort of students to participate in UMBC’s Intercultural Engagement Prep course in SP25 semester. This course is designed to grow your intercultural competency and skills. It also serves as the introduction for students interested in UMBC’s </span><a href="https://peacecorpsprep.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Peace Corps Prep Program</span></a><span>.   </span></div></div></div></div></div><div><div><div><br><p><span>This program is open to:</span></p><ul><li><p><span>International students (You are already in your intercultural experience!)</span></p></li><li><p><span>Future or returned study abroad students (Prep for or reflect upon your abroad experience!)</span></p></li><li><p><span>Students interested in applying to the Peace Corps or similar international service programs after graduation (Get ready to learn and serve abroad!)</span></p></li><li><p><span>Students who have an interest in preparing for other intercultural experiences or international development careers (Is this the path for you?!)</span></p></li><li><p><span>Students who want to prepare themselves as global citizens in a multicultural world (Everyone, right?)</span></p></li></ul><br><p><span>As a participant in the Intercultural Engagement Prep pilot program, you will:</span></p><ul><li><p><span>Meet other globally-minded students at UMBC;</span></p></li><li><p><span>Develop your critical analytical skills;</span></p></li><li><p><span>Increase your cultural self-awareness and c</span><span>ritically reflect on your own unconscious bias;</span></p></li><li><p><span>Develop strategies to improve your intercultural communication and how you’ll apply it in your future career;</span></p></li><li><p><span>Recognize cultural differences, commonalities, perceptions, power and privilege dynamics, and how they can lead to conflict; and</span></p></li><li><p><span>Understand the importance of intercultural dialogue and intercultural citizenship competencies for fostering social justice.</span></p></li></ul><br><p><span>This non-credit/no-fee course, PRAC 103 (course # 6928), will meet twice in the Spring 2025 semester at a mutually agreeable time, but the majority of the course is accessed through asynchronous learning.     <div class="html-content"><div>Present your research or creative work at <span>Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (</span>URCAD) this April!<br><br></div><div><div><p>On Wednesday April 16, 2025, URCAD will feature research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work will be shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.</p><p>All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at URCAD.     <div class="html-content"><p>The Education Abroad Office is delighted to announce the continuation of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Science (CAHSS) Dean's Scholarship for Education Abroad!</p><p>Dean Kimberly Moffitt has pledged to provide a study abroad scholarship to students from every CAHSS department/program to ease the financial burden of this experiential activity, while also demonstrating our responsibility for educating our students to be active in the world they will soon lead.</p><p>Award amounts will typically be between $2,500 and $5,000. Applicants must apply to study abroad through UMBC at <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/studyabroad/posts/146322/3bc66/55d743359bd9da8f1a3b051e5dc2693a/email/link?link=http%3A%2F%2Fgoabroad.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">goabroad.umbc.edu</a> and be degree-seeking UMBC undergraduate or graduate students with at least one major in CAHSS. Applicants must also meet eligibility requirements for UMBC study abroad programs. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need as well as to students applying for UMBC faculty-led or exchange programs.</p><p>The current Deadline for students looking to study abroad in upcoming Summer, Fall, Academic Year, Winter, and Spring programs is <strong>February 10th</strong>. <Title>Fulbright UK Summer Institutes Information Session</Title>

Academically talented UMBC freshmen and sophomores of any major with little to no previous international travel experience and/or are first-generation college students are particularly encouraged to apply! Applicants can choose from one of six summer institutes across the United Kingdom with topics ranging from Climate Change to Social Justice in a British context.</div><div><br></div><div>The UK Summer Institutes last between three and four weeks, and almost all costs, including tuition, fees, housing, most meals and airfare, are included. <Title>Meet Maryland's Director of International Affairs!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Meet UMBC alumna Mary (Mendy) Nitsch who serves as Director for International Affairs in the Office of the Secretary of State for Maryland.  Ms. Nitsch will discuss how her graduate studies in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and teaching experiences in the US and abroad prepared her for state-level policy work.  In this virtual session, you'll have the opportunity to learn from Ms. Nitsch's experience and ask questions to get advice about a career in international public policy. Register for this session by completing the online form before 12:00 noon on 18 November.</span></p><p><span>Mary E. (Mendy) Nitsch</span><span> is currently the Director of International Affairs (IA) in Maryland’s Office of the Secretary of State in Annapolis. She has worked in international relations through four gubernatorial administrations, including in the Maryland Department of Commerce, Office of International Investment and Trade (OIIT). Mendy previously taught English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) both domestically and abroad. She lived and worked overseas for a total of 8 years in Asia, Latin America, and Central Asia, including as a U.S. State Department English Language Fellow in the Dominican Republic.
