As a Global Studies major, Hannah has focused on International Affairs At UMBC Hannah has been able to study a wide variety of courses and interact with different individuals across campus and in the community to further her understanding of an increasingly global world. Upon graduation, she hopes to continue this journey by pursuing law.

 

 

 

Outstanding Researcher:  The student with the best performance in a research project: Gabriela Salas

Gabi is a current senior Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar double majoring in Global Studies and Gender and Women's Studies as well as minoring in International Politics. She is a semi-finalist for a Fulbright research grant and plans on attending graduate school starting in Fall of 2020 in order to earn a PhD in Sociology.

Graduating with a major in Global Studies and a Spanish Certificate, Gurleen has been involved in recruiting students for an organization called Students Helping Honduras, which helps eliminate poverty and violence through accessible education. Additionally, she uses her passion for music to spread the word of social justice outside of school through her small business, gurl.

URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research, scholarship, or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as you are enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work. Eligible students are degree-seeking undergraduates who plan to conduct mentored research or creative work between June 2019 – May 2020.

The URA may be used to support work being done as part of a capstone project, honors thesis, ongoing lab, scholars program, art exhibit or performance, or independent project. Funds can be used for supplies, research-related travel, participant incentives, or as a living stipend.

The Shriver Center still has some opportunities available for UMBC students interested in Service-Learning & Community Engagement for the spring 2019 semester:

ARBUTUS ACHIEVERS (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 2:15pm - 4:00pm)*

Tutor middle school students to prepare for high school and college readiness. Create and lead activities that encourage leadership development.

CREATIVE CODERS (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 2:15pm - 4:00pm)*

Calling all Coders! Creative Coders teaches students the basics of computer science through game programming in Scratch.  Work with middle school students to instill in them a love of programming for years to come.

COLLEGE GARDENS (Tuesdays or Thursdays, 2:45pm - 5:15pm)

Tutor children from grades K-6 in academics.  Develop stimulating activities for either indoor or outdoor recreation--including artistic, physical, and mental tasks.

MS SWIM PROGRAM (Fridays or Sundays, 1 - 4pm)

Students will assist Multiple Sclerosis clients with their water-based physical therapy (aquatic exercises), as well as a chance to develop relationship-building skills.  A great opportunity for anyone interested in a healthcare career! 

READING PARTNERS (Various Days)

Tutor an elementary school student one-on-one to strengthen their reading abilities using a structured and easy-to-follow curriculum.

RICA (Wednesdays, 11:30am - 3:00pm)

Assist students, ages 12 -18 with emotional disturbance disorders on schoolwork and behavior in a therapeutic environment.

SHERMAN CENTER EARLY LITERACY PROGRAM (Days/Times Vary)

Build young children's literacy and language skills as a classroom tutor, grades K-3 (ages 5 - 8).  Tasks include reading with students and assisting them with writing/vocabulary activities and assignments.

SWES (Southwest Emergency Services) (limited spaces available)

Assist in sorting clothes, food, medical supplies, etc. to keep this thrift store organized and manageable.  In walking distance of UMBC.


Transportation is provided for all sites except Reading Partners.
*Must be able to attend both days; sites are within walking distance

The Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship for Summer 2019, Fall 2019 and Academic Year 2019-2020 study abroad programs has been extended until January 21st, 2019. Scholarships range from $1,250 – $10,000! 

Eligibility: 

·       U.S. citizen or permanent resident

·       Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S. (graduate students are not eligible)

·       Study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the student’s home institution

·       Study abroad program must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in country/countries

And remember, deadlines for Summer/Fall 2019 and Academic Year 2019/20 are swiftly approaching!

Global Studies majors can meet their Study Abroad requirement by attending a
UMBC Faculty-Led Summer Study Abroad program. 

Want to learn more about this option? Come to the Grit Going Global: Summer Abroad event to learn about your faculty-led options, talk with Financial Aid and sample some international food! 
This event will take place on Wednesday, 14 November on the 7th floor of the Library from 11-2pm.

Faculty-led options for summer 2019 are:

·         Biology and Spanish Language in Barcelona Spain 

·         Spanish Language Immersion in Colombia 

·         Cross-Cultural Psychology in Cuba 

·         Child Developmental Psychology in Granada, Spain 

·         American Literary Perspective in Paris, France 

·         Picturing Italian Art & Culture in Context in Rome, Italy    

·         Dylan Thomas Creative Writing Summer School in Lampeter, Wales 

 

Study Abroad will also be giving out free t-shirts to students who speak to at least three faculty-led tables or attend any of the following mini info sessions:

·         12:00-12:20pm: Financial Aid 

·         12:20-12:40pm: Gilman Scholarship Spotlight

·         12:40-1:00pm: Career Center
