Congrats to our ESRA Personnel on Service Awards
ESRA would like to congratulate our team members who were
recognized at the 2025 Service Awards Ceremony, held on Thursday, December 4,
2025 at the UMBC Retrievers Activity Center.
Cathy Manalansan, Executive Administrative Assistant I, has been with the State
of Maryland for 35 years! Judith Laferriere, Financial Business Manager and
Analyst, was recognized for 10 years with UMBC, and Valerie Casasanto, Program
Coordinator (615/UMBC/ESI), is celebrating 20 years with UMBC!
Thank you for your professionalism and dedication to UMBC's mission and work
with our NASA Goddard-affiliated centers, past and present, CSST, GEST, GESTAR II, GPHI (PHaSER), and JCET, as well as UMBC's Earth and Space Institute (ESI).

UMBC kicks off Science Career Development series at NASA GSFC
Dr. Don Engel (UMBC/CSST/CSEE) along with
ESRA and UMBC personnel arranged for a consultant from
Success in Science Career Coaching to meet with scientists in our UMBC NASA-funded cooperative agreements (
GESTAR II,
CSST,
GPHI). The NASA funding news fluctuates from day to day, and these meetings are meant as a proactive response to and preparation for potential changes, specifically as they may affect those in STEM careers. (Scientists from other home institutions in our cooperative agreements are welcome to join, but UMBC participants will have priority for the events given the limited seats, provided responses come far enough in advance.)
The first two events in this series were held on Thursday, July 10th, at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
Dr. Cassie Briggs gave a presentation titled "Future-Proofing Your Scientific Career: The Power of a Professional Brand" in the morning session, and she led a smaller, interactive workshop on "Building Your Professional Brand" in the afternoon session. Both sessions were well attended. Future events and services are being coordinated, with the next sessions being scheduled for August 21, 2025.

JCET and GPHI members at Sun-Climate Symposium
In mid-May 2022, the
Sun-Climate Symposium 2022 was held in Madison, WI. Since 2002, this symposium has been a NASA-sponsored multidisciplinary, international science meeting. This year, the science theme was "Improved Climate-Record Reconstructions from Solar Variability and Earth System Observations".
Presenters from JCET, GPHI, and GSFC included Jae Lee (UMBC/613), Sergio DeSouza-Machado (UMBC), Vanderlei Martins (UMBC), Bob Leamon (UMBC/672), and Steve Platnick (GSFC/610). Dr. Martins and Dr. Platnick both presented invited talks. Each scientist gave an oral presentation and showed strong support of climate data records and future missions on solar and terrestrial measurements.
Jae Lee: "Non-Gaussian Distribution of TOA SW Flux as Observed by MISR and CERES";
Robert Leamon: "The Solar Cycle Clock: Prediction of F10.7, EUV Irradiance, and the Last X-flare of Solar Cycle 25";
Vanderlei Martins: "Current and future measurements of aerosol and cloud properties with the HARP family of Multi-Angle Imaging Polarimeters", invited talk; and,
Steve Platnick: "Time Series Analysis of the NASA MODIS and VIIRS Cloud Products", invited talk.
