In the first part, Dr. McKittrick offers a confession and a reflection about geography, geographic knowledge, and race, considering how alternative spatial practices and black geographies are obscured by prevailing knowledge systems. The second part of the presentation focuses on Dr. McKittrick’s ongoing preoccupation with methodology and how radical methodologies are connected to practices of liberation, highlighting what black studies teaches us about sharing and creating ideas. This presentation draws on Dear Science and Other Stories.</div><div><br></div><div> </div><div><br></div><div><strong><u>Lecturer Bio:</u></strong> Dr. Katherine McKittrick is Professor of Gender Studies and Canada Research Chair in Black Studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada. She authored Demonic Grounds: Black Women and the Cartographies of Struggle (UMP, 2006) and edited and contributed to Sylvia Wynter: On Being Human as Praxis (DUP, 2015).     <div class="html-content">Congratulations to M.S. student Alicia Sabatino on co-authoring a piece (linked below) in <em>The Conversation</em>!<div><br></div><div><a href="https://theconversation.com/satellite-data-the-other-type-of-smartphone-data-you-might-not-know-about-190611" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Satellite data: The other type of smartphone data you might not know about</a><br><br>Alicia Sabatino is a graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in Geography at UMBC. Her Master’s research focuses on the racial-sexual geographies of incarceration in the United States. She also contributes to various research projects around cities, housing and technology using critical GIS methods. Alicia is currently working at Chesapeake Conservancy as a Web GIS Specialist. She also did her undergraduate studies with UMBC's GES department, while completing a minor in Computer Science at the same time.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>

    <div class="html-content">Congratulations to Dr. Charles Ichoku on being appointed the new director of the UMBC-led Goddard Earth Science Technology and Research (GESTAR) Center II! Dr. Ichoku will be applying his experience with remote sensing and earth science research not only as the new director of GESTAR II but also as a professor in our department. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Ichoku! <div><br></div><div>Dr. Ichoku joins us from Howard University, where he has been teaching Earth and Environmental Sciences, and simultaneously serving as the Distinguished Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Science Center in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology (NCAS-M). Previously, Dr. Ichoku worked as a Research Physical Scientist with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for 20 years. He earned his Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from the Pierre &amp; Marie Curie University, Paris, France, after earning both his M.S. in Remote Sensing and his B.S. in Surveying from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.</div><div><div><br></div><div>You can read more about the extensive experience Dr. Ichoku brings to our department and to the NASA-supported work of GESTAR II in the UMBC news article by Sarah Hansen linked below.<div><br></div><div><a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/new-director-to-take-earth-science-research-into-next-era/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">New center director to take NASA-supported Earth science research into next era at UMBC</a></div></div></div></div>
