The Collective Bargaining Bill is just round the corner, and we - the Graduate Student Association (GSA), want to know your stance on the bill. This survey's purpose is to understand how graduate assistants (GAs) at UMBC are currently feeling about their financial situation, including things such as housing, routine expenses, and GA benefits in relation to the current bill that will allow USM GAs the right to unionize. If you are unaware of the Collective Bargaining Bill or need a refresher, please go through this resource pack, especially curated for your reference.

Dear Graduate Students, Pursuant to the recent increase in transit demand by graduate students, the Graduate Assistants Advisory Committee (GAAC) is conducting a survey to understand the transit demands of graduate students, specifically graduate assistants, who need to be on campus multiple days a week and primarily rely on the UMBC transit service to commute to campus. Filling out the survey will help us identify gaps in transit schedules and routes, if any. The information collected through this survey will be shared with the Transit office to meet the transit needs of UMBC's graduate students.

Hello Graduate Assistants!

 

Every year, legislation is introduced in the Maryland General Assembly which would grant graduate assistants the right to collectively bargain.  We are writing to provide an update on this year’s bill (SB0521) and to sincerely thank all of you for your feedback and questions. 

 

This year’s bill has not been voted out of the Senate Finance committee which means it will not be voted on by the full Senate and therefore has no chance of passing, as today, April 12th is Sine Die, the last day of legislative session for Maryland’s General Assembly.  We, as UMBC’s Graduate Assistant Advisory Council, did not take an official stance this year. We have spent a significant amount of time collecting your thoughts and questions, speaking with graduate students throughout the University System of Maryland, working with UMBC’s Graduate School leadership, and conducting a thorough analysis of the bill with input from several state lawmakers and the Comptroller of Maryland. 

 

As part of these efforts, we hope to continue holding listening sessions this Fall to hear from you.

Gears bring you to our first of a kind event IDEATHON (how new problems or existing problems can be tackled better by using your unique idea) which is all about presenting your unique idea to the jury and fellow graduate students in UMBC.  You can participate either individually or in a group or no more than 3 people.

This event will highlight your creative skills, uniqueness of your idea (idea can be social, environmental, IT technology, medical field related, etc. These ideas can be real or hypothetical). You must create 3 min presentation showcasing your idea, how unique it is. We have marked around prizes of $1000 to be a win. All the participants are eligible for a free UMBC logo Mask**.  Also, the First 10 participants will get a chance to win UMBC merchandise T-shirts. **
