Special Opportunities in the STEM Fields
Chile offers five Science Initiative Grants in any STEM field for students at the Master's or Ph. D. level. As much scientific research is conducted in English, language requirements are often less than for other Chilean grants.
Finland offers three grants to Lappeenranta University of Technology for MS degrees in Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Science and Physics, Pervasive Computing and Communications for Sustainable Development, and Energy Technology. There are also grants for MS programs at the University of Helsinki and University of Turku.
**MS degrees in Finland are all taught in English.**
Iceland hosts an Arctic Research Initiatives for currently enrolled Master's and doctoral students. This initiative is co-sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation. Projects must relate to the Arctic and the individuals who live there, and can be in any field in the social and natural sciences. Fields relevant to UMBC students include, political science, anthropology, linguistics, gender studies, health, economics, ecology, geology, and sustainable sciences.
Indonesia offers 10 Fulbright Research Science and Technology Grants for the following fields: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Energy, Engineering (all fields), Environmental Science, Geology/Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Information Science, Materials Science, Mathematics, Oceanography, Physics, and Public Health (research or theoretical focus only.)
**There is no language requirement for Indonesia.**
The Netherlands offers up to 10 Fulbright awards, in cooperation with the Netherlands America Foundation (NAF) for students in the STEM fields. Of particular interest are research projects in water management, computer science and engineering, as well as physics and mathematics.
**MS degrees and research in the Netherlands is conducted in English.**
