Mental Health First Aid ® is an 8-hour national certification course that is designed to teach the layperson the skills to recognize the signs of a mental health or substance use disorder crisis, identify community resources, and link individuals in need of treatment and support to the proper resources. An in-person skills based course, Mental Health First Aid ® teaches participants a 5-step action plan that can be used to help those in need.

I hope you are having a relaxing and rejuvenating summer.

Please consider attending a virtual meeting with campus leaders on Thursday, August 5, at 1 p.m. You can register for the event here.

Co-hosted by the Faculty Senate and the Office of the Provost, this meeting provides an opportunity for faculty to hear updates on the current state of the pandemic and the safety measures that UMBC has in place for Fall 2021. Speakers will include President Hrabowski, Provost Rous, Lucy Wilson, Senior Advisor to the University for Public Health and Pandemic Response, and representatives from the COVID-19 Planning Coordinating Committee (CPCC). 

Additional speakers and topics for discussion will be added to the agenda based on your suggestions. If you have a question or topic you would like discussed, please submit them to the Communications team ahead of time using this form. If you would prefer to share your questions anonymously then you also have the option to send them to your department senator who will forward them to me or to send them to me directly (osmith@umbc.edu). Please submit your questions by Tuesday, August 3 at noon.

Note on the format: if the number of attendees permits, we hope to hold this as a Webex meeting and not as an “event” in order to facilitate an in-person robust dialogue between faculty and campus leadership.

Caregiving Reports + Recommendations Now Available

Read the PSS and Faculty Advisory Reports on Caregiver Needs

Over the course of the spring semester, two working groups at UMBC surveyed UMBC faculty and staff caregivers to better understand the needs and experiences of caregivers at UMBC. While the pandemic created a greater visibility of caregivers challenges, many of these challenges had already existed. As we return to campus, this is an opportunity to re-think and re-evaluate the ways in which our campus community can create a more holistic and supportive workplace, particularly for those employees who have dual roles as caregivers.

Staff Caregiving Report + Recommendations 
The UMBC Professional Staff Senate designated a Caregiving Committee, who in turn developed a survey and collected responses from a broad cross-section of UMBC staff. The survey gathered quantitative and qualitative data regarding productivity, mental and physical health during the pandemic, work-life balance, and staff attitudes regarding an array of potential benefits that would support caregivers returning to campus. 

This is an opportunity to leverage what our community has learned during the pandemic to address challenges around accessibility, child care/elder care responsibilities, mental health, and chronic illness/disability, with the goal of creating a workplace that is more accessible, flexible and responsive to the needs of staff, and consistent with UMBC values. Faculty Caregiving Report + Recommendations 
In March 2021 UMBC’s Faculty Caregiving Advisory Committee which was appointed by the Provost reached out to faculty members to ask them about their experiences and to suggest possible solutions in order to better understand and address the needs of faculty caregivers as our community transitions out of the conditions of the pandemic into the uncertainties of university life after Covid-19. After reviewing the caregiving crisis during Covid-19 and its implications specifically for women faculty, this report shares findings drawn from listening sessions and anonymous surveys conducted in Spring 2021 with 80 faculty caregivers (8.6% of the faculty) across the colleges at UMBC. It offers recommendations based on these findings—for the university, divisions, departments and programs—to ensure that faculty caregivers are provided with the support they need now and in the future. 

The report was released along with the commitment that the Provost and Council of Deans will draw upon the recommendations of the Committee in their efforts to provide post-COVID-19 support for faculty caregivers whose research, teaching, and service has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. UMBC is pleased to announce the launch of  UMBC Cares Faculty and Staff Emergency Fund. The fund was established to assist eligible employees experiencing an emergency financial need. Emergencies could include food, housing, caregiving expenses, reduction or loss of household income due to furloughs or layoffs, and/or unexpected emergencies compounded by the impact of the current public health emergency. The fund is available for emergencies and financial hardship resulting from any circumstances and will continue to be a resource once the current crisis has passed.

Dear Colleagues,

Next week the Caregiving Advisory Committee is holding its last listening sessions and our online survey will close on Friday, April 2. Here is the link for the feedback survey. 

Here are the dates for our remaining listening sessions:

Monday, March 29th from 11am-12pm

Facilitators: Jennifer Mata-McMahon (Education), Jess Myers (Women’s Center), and Phyllis Robinson (Biology)

RSVP is required to access the listening session link. Please sign-up for your preferred listening time via this google form. 

Dr. Phyllis Robinson (probinso@umbc.edu) will also be holding a WISE Members Only Listening Session on Wednesday, March 31st, from 3pm – 4pm. WISE members should have already received an invitation; if you are a WISE faculty member you can also register through the link above.
