The First Generation Network here at UMBC is gearing up for an impactful, informative and empowering Fall 2020</span></span><span><span> semester and we need your help!</span></span><span><span>  </span></span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span><span>We will b</span></span><span><span>e hosting</span></span><span><span> a First – Gen Day </span></span><span><span>celebration </span></span><span><span>for the First Generation population here at UMBC.  </span></span><span><span>First Generation Day was designed to celebrate the success of first-generation college students, faculty and staff on colleges and universities campuses across the nation.  The goal of First Generation Day is to foster an environment that builds relationships with students/colleagues, involves leadership and to galvanize a force across our campuses. </span></span></p></div><div><p><span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>First Generation Day will be held on </span></span><span><span>Sunday, November 8</span></span><span><span>th</span></span><span><span> from 11:00 AM – 3:30 PM</span></span><span><span>.  Our goal for this program is to better understand the systemic barriers plaguing higher education and the supports necessary for this important and resilient population to continue thriving.  </span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>WHERE YOU COME IN!</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>We would like faculty and staff, specifically those who<span> </span><u>identify as first generation college students themselves</u>, to participate in this event with us.</span></span></p></div><div><p><span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>WHAT IS NEEDED!</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>We </span></span><span><span>plan to host various roundtable discussions during the day. <Title>Upcoming Policy Changes</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Dear Colleagues, <br><br>As we are about to start the second part of Spring 2020, I would like to<br>thank each one of you for your leadership and for all your efforts to<br>adapt to different and new ways of working. This a challenging time<br><div>period for us and for our students and we will get through it by <br></div><div>working together and supporting each other.<br></div><br>In the upcoming days, you and your department colleagues will receive<br>detailed information from the University Administration about<br>changes in grading and P&amp;T policies. It is important to note that these<br>changes are temporary in nature and they are made to respond to the<br><div>pressing and urgent challenges caused by COVID-19 in a timely <br></div><div>and effective manner.</div><br><div>Despite the need for rapid action, our administration made <br></div><div>every effort to seek council from our Faculty Senate Executive <br></div><div>Committee, Undergraduate Council (for grading policy),</div><div> and Faculty Affairs Committee (for P&amp;T policy). The Executive</div><div>Committee Members and the chairs of the above committees talked online</div>and exchanged emails last week and over the weekend to inform the<br>forthcoming changes. I would like to thank every individual who<br>participated in discussions and offered thoughts.<br><br>The Executive Committee also drafted a letter showing our support for<br>our students and our commitment to their success. This letter should<br>go out to our students tomorrow. <br><br>Let's remember that these are times for displaying flexibility and<br>understanding to our students and colleagues.
