Apologies for technical issues with Webex invite yesterday
Dear all,I'm sorry that the Webex invite for yesterday's Faculty Senate meeting didn't work. We discovered the issue right before the meeting started and managed to send a new invite to the senators/guests. But I forgot to circle back to this group--so that's on me. Hopefully, that was a one-time only glitch but I'll shoot out a quick correction if it happens again.

Hello! The First Generation Network here at UMBC is gearing up for an impactful, informative and empowering Fall 2020 semester and we need your help!
We will be hosting a First – Gen Day celebration for the First Generation population here at UMBC. First Generation Day was designed to celebrate the success of first-generation college students, faculty and staff on colleges and universities campuses across the nation. The goal of First Generation Day is to foster an environment that builds relationships with students/colleagues, involves leadership and to galvanize a force across our campuses.
First Generation Day will be held on Sunday, November 8th from 11:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Our goal for this program is to better understand the systemic barriers plaguing higher education and the supports necessary for this important and resilient population to continue thriving.
We would like faculty and staff, specifically those who identify as first generation college students themselves, to participate in this event with us.
We plan to host various roundtable discussions during the day. We would like for individuals to sign up for a time in the orange section to participate in our event. Any advice that you can share will be beneficial for First Generation students in navigating the university system.
If you would love to support us with this program, we ask that you confirm your attendance by Friday, September 18th at 5:00 PM. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact Carlos Williams (carlosw@umbc.edu) or Antoinette Newsome (acnews@umbc.edu).

The Convocation ceremony will include live remarks from President Freeman Hrabowski and other campus leaders, followed by a special virtual version of the traditional pinning ceremony. During this ceremony, new students put on their UMBC paw print pins and become official members of our Retriever community. As always, we will conclude with the singing of our Alma Mater. New students received additional information about the ceremony in their welcome box. A link to a recording of the event will be available later this week if you are unable to attend the live event. We can’t wait to officially welcome our new students to the UMBC community. We hope you will join us for this special event!

Upcoming Policy Changes
Dear Colleagues,
As we are about to start the second part of Spring 2020, I would like to
thank each one of you for your leadership and for all your efforts to
adapt to different and new ways of working. This a challenging time
period for us and for our students and we will get through it by
working together and supporting each other.
In the upcoming days, you and your department colleagues will receive
detailed information from the University Administration about
changes in grading and P&T policies. It is important to note that these
changes are temporary in nature and they are made to respond to the
pressing and urgent challenges caused by COVID-19 in a timely
and effective manner.
Despite the need for rapid action, our administration made
every effort to seek council from our Faculty Senate Executive
Committee, Undergraduate Council (for grading policy),
and Faculty Affairs Committee (for P&T policy). The Executive
Committee Members and the chairs of the above committees talked online
and exchanged emails last week and over the weekend to inform the
forthcoming changes. I would like to thank every individual who
participated in discussions and offered thoughts.
The Executive Committee also drafted a letter showing our support for
our students and our commitment to their success. This letter should
go out to our students tomorrow.
Let's remember that these are times for displaying flexibility and
understanding to our students and colleagues. As always, please do not
hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or thoughts.

Off-campus Social Distancing
Worth to consider
Dear Senators,
It has been observed that somewhat large gatherings still take place in our area. Perhaps, in our conversations with the students and colleagues, it is worth to start bringing up the need for social distancing outside of the campus as well.
Probably, we all can remember or acknowledge how hard it can be to stay home on any given weekend night as a young person. However, in these times of emergency and crisis, we should continue to emphasize how it is also important to care about the health and well-being of the vulnerable ones in our society.

Academic Continuity
Widening technology adoption to serve students
Dear Faculty Senate Members,
I wanted to
send a quick note to ask you to encourage further adoption of online
instruction and learning tools in your respective departments and
units.
In this time of public health emergency,
it is important for us to get prepared to ensure that there will be
academic continuity. We are fortunate to have excellent networking and
computing capabilities compared to the past decades. On our campus, Jack
Suess and John Fritz as well as their colleagues in DoIT have worked
tirelessly for many years to put these tools in place. Thanks to those
efforts, now we are able to be prepared to ensure academic continuity.

continue to encourage your colleagues and students to use the IT tools
