Update on the Campus Entrance Project - January 2015

Work on the campus entrance project has transitioned to Administration Drive and the surrounding areas, creating several changes to vehicle, parking, and pedestrian patterns that will remain in effect throughout the remainder of the winter session, extending into spring 2015.

Administration Drive no longer acts as a thoroughfare. The drive only offers access to Admin Garage and the RAC drop-off circle.

Several bays on both levels of the Admin Garage, as well as the original upper level entrance have been closed during demolition.

ADA accessible Admin Garage parking has been relocated to the lower level, and an accessible route to campus has been provided. Additional ADA accessible parking can be found in Lots 8 and 9 and the Commons Garage. Please see our accessibility map for more information on accessible routes to locations across campus.

All parking spaces in the lower level of Admin Garage, including the parking lot expansion, are restricted to admin zone E gated card holders and handicap parking only.

In the event no spaces are available in the lower garage, overflow parking on the upper level is permitted to all admin zone E gated card holders, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Metered spaces on the upper level of Admin Garage are for visitor parking only.

The west end of Administration Drive is open to service vehicles and deliveries only.

Please view our construction map for more details about these changes.

Work on UMBC Blvd. and Hilltop Circle will continue throughout the spring. Construction on UMBC Blvd. has transitioned to the east (inbound) side, and a new traffic pattern has been developed to handle incoming and outgoing traffic. Use caution when entering or exiting campus from UMBC Blvd. and be mindful of construction personnel and pedestrians in the area.

Please expect delays and give yourself plenty of extra travel time to arrive on campus. We encourage the campus community to use alternate routes, such as Hilltop Rd., Walker Ave., or Shelbourne Rd. You can view these routes on our campus map.

As always, we encourage you to visit the Campus Entrance website and join our myUMBC group to receive news and updates and stay apprised of how construction on this project may impact you.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we continue work on this important project. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

Open Forum on Upcoming Construction Projects (12/5)

Facilities Management will be providing an open forum to provide details about all upcoming campus construction projects. The open forum will be held in ITE Room 104 (Lecture Hall 7) from 12-12:50 p.m., Friday, December 5, 2014.

The projects to be discussed affect the entire campus population and will be of interest to the majority of staff, faculty and students on campus.

The New Campus Entranceway

This project will alter the intersections at UMBC Blvd., Research Park Drive, and Hilltop Circle to incorporate traffic circles for improved safety and better traffic flow. Pedestrian plazas adjacent to the RAC and Admin Bldg will be improved, as well.

Stormwater Facility (Pond) Renovation

This project will perform upgrades to enhance the function and appearance of the pond. The perimeter walls will be replaced, the pond deepened, and the landscape upgraded to provide a more functional stormwater runoff, as well as a more pleasing gathering space.

The Fine Arts Building Renovation

This project will renovate space vacated by departments relocating into the new Performing Arts and Humanities Building. The upper floors of the north and south wings will be renovated to accommodate other departments and building systems will be updated for more efficient operation.

Apartment Renovations

This project will renovate West Hills Apartments, the last phase of renovation of the apartment complexes. Hillside and Terrace Apartments were completed in previous phases.

The Event Center

The Event Center and Arena is proposed to be approximately 164,000 gross sq. ft. The center will operate as a multipurpose event facility to host a variety of revenue and non-revenue generating activities that serve both the University and local community needs. It will also serve as the home for the Athletic Dept. and the varsity basketball and volleyball programs. The project site is located along the east side of Hilltop Circle, opposite Commons Drive.

Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building

This project will seamlessly connect teaching and research activities to enhance and stimulate collaborative approaches to advance the State's biotechnology industry and increase the number of STEM graduates. The building, located on the site of the Academic Services Building, will provide approximately 131,000 gross sq. ft. of flexible and adaptable research and education spaces to support current and future interdisciplinary life science programs.

Administration Building Green Roof

The France-Merrick Foundation approved a $1 million grant to support building a vegetated roofing system/green roof on the top floor of the Administration Building. This project will illustrate the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Thank you for your participation in this information sharing opportunity.

We encourage you to join our myUMBC group to receive news and updates and stay apprised of how construction projects across campus may impact you.

New Entrance Project Updates

The Project Team is grateful to the Campus Community for your patience and understanding as we continue construction of the New Campus Entrance, an important construction project to upgrade the roadways, pedestrian pathways and parking surrounding the main campus entrance.

There has been significant progress on the project, but we still have a long way to go. This is to provide some important updates.

Campus Plaza

The main entrance to campus through the Plaza will officially be open as of Monday, September 29, 2014. More of the Plaza will become available to pedestrians making access between buildings even more convenient. These pathways will be completely accessible. A small area in the center of the Plaza will remain inaccessible as the Project completes plantings, furnishings and fixtures.

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014, the roadway and pedestrian path behind Admin Building will close. The project will be improving this area to provide better access to service and delivery vehicles to this part of campus. Pedestrians can access the Sherman Hall courtyard from the front side of Admin Building.

Admin Drive Garage

The work area of on the east side of the Admin Drive garage has progressed and will expand closer to the RAC Building. Vehicles and pedestrians will be re-routed through this area, but there will be no interruption to service and signs will direct the public to their destinations. This transition is anticipated some time in October. The Project Team will provide notice and information will be posted on the website.

Work on the new ramp to access the top of the garage on the east side continues through November, 2014. The new parking area on the west side will be completed after the ramp is completed. Access to this parking area will occur when the project transitions to the west side of the garage.

Campus Entry Road

The campus entry road work remains on hold until the project receives MDE approval for this area. The Project anticipates this approval in October, 2014. When this occurs, traffic patterns on UMBC Blvd. will change, but there will be no interruption to service—and signs will direct the public to their destinations. The Project Team will provide notice and information will be posted on the website.

There are no changes to parking at this time. The Project Team will provide notice if and when changes are anticipated.

As we continue to move forward with this important project, we encourage you to visit the Campus Entrance website and join our myUMBC group to receive news and updates and stay apprised of how construction on this project may impact you.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
