Commons Entrance Closures & Pedestrian Path Changes

The contractor working on the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building will begin installing new sidewalk pavers near the south entrance of the Commons Building beginning approximately Wednesday 9/19/2018. The installation will require the temporary relocation of the exterior walkway in this area and partial closures to the Commons Building entry doors. The door closures will continue through approximately Friday 10/5/2018 with minor shifts to the exterior walkway continuing through mid-October. An accessible route will be maintained into the Commons Building and through the area during most of this time. During times that an accessible route is not available, signage will direct pedestrians to an alternate accessible route.

This work requires the removal of an existing concrete slab. At times, this will require the use of noise producing equipment such as jackhammers. The contractor will strive to minimize the use of this equipment and in-turn, disruption to University operations.

Please see the attached diagram depicting the extents of the work and relocated walkways.

Accessibility is part of the design process, and we work in partnership Accessibility and Disability Services which supports faculty, staff, students and visitors with disabilities. If you have a concern about accessibility, or want to inquire about a disability-based accommodation, please do so through their website.

Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain and enhance the UMBC campus.

Facilities Management

These areas, which include new sidewalks and landscaping, will be permanently opened to pedestrians in early June.
