1. Tell us a little
about yourself, Michael.
My name is Michael Raup, and I am a undergraduate senior
majoring in Political Science and minoring in Writing. In my current role with
the Learning Resources Center, I serve as a Level 3 Master Certified Writing Tutor through the College Reading and
Learning Association and work with students face to face in the Writing
Center and through online tutoring. I am from Prince George's County but reside
now in Anne Arundel County.
2. Tell us about how
you are involved on campus.
I mainly assist the Writing Center in working with students
face to face. In past semesters, I have served as a Conversational Language
Partner for the English Language Institute and a Transfer Student Network
Leader for Off Campus Student Services. Under Dr. Anissa Sorokin, the past
Writing Center Director, I attended the Mid Atlantic Writing Centers
Association (MAWCA) conference and presented research in March 2016. I also
participated in the Naylor Workshop for Undergraduate Research in Writing
Studies in September 2016 under the mentorship of Dr. Sorokin. My goal is to
have my research published in the near future.
3. How long have you
been a Writing Center tutor?
I have served as a Writing Center tutor since Spring 2015
when I completed my Level 1 CRLA training. Including summer terms, I have
tutored for a total of 6 semesters.
4. How and why did
you get involved in being a Writing Center tutor?
I decided to change my major (from Information Systems) to a
more writing focused program. In return, I decided to give back to the UMBC
community by passing on my writing skills to students who needed the most help.
I felt inspired to help students who may
not have had the proper instruction in writing in past institutions.
5. What is your
favorite thing about being a Writing Center tutor?
I enjoy working with students face to face and helping them
learn from their mistakes. I am particularly pleased when I see "the
lightbulb" go off on a student when answering a difficult question and the
learning that occurs.
6. Why should
students utilize the Writing Center?
Students should utilize the Writing Center to get feedback
or a second opinion on important papers. As writers, we sometimes fail to get
distance and objectivity from our work until we hear a second opinion from
someone else.
7. What advice would
you give students about how to prepare for a Writing Center tutoring session?
Students should come to sessions with two hardcopies of
their document. No mobile phones or laptops unless the student does not have
access to a printer. Students should have specific questions in mind for
targeted areas of intervention, especially with longer papers where the tutor
cannot read everything in one session. Students should not expect tutors to
just edit and proofread papers for grammatical errors, but instead learn from mistakes to become a more independent learner.
8. When and where can
someone work with you through the Writing Center?
I am available on Mondays
from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm for face to face appointments in the Writing Center
on the first floor of the Library. On
Fridays, I have online tutoring from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm.
As you all know, UMBC requires you to complete a foreign language for graduation and many UMBC students choose Spanish. While foreign languages may come easily to others, some students may need a little extra help. That's where the Spanish Lab comes in!
Spanish Lab? What is that? How does it work?
The Spanish Lab is a walk in Spanish help program that the Learning Resources Center is piloting this semester. This is a space where you can work on your Spanish homework or group projects and ask tutors for help if you need it. It's like having a study hall with tutors available if you have questions. If you're taking a Spanish class up to SPAN 201 and you don't understand something--this is the chance of a lifetime...or well of a semester anyway.
When and where does this happen?
Spanish Lab will start Friday March 3, 2017 and will run every Friday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. until May 12, 2017. The lab will be located on the first floor of the library, in the space that the Writing Center and Math Lab normally occupy.
What should I bring?
Bring questions! Bring projects! Bring anything that you are working on for your Spanish class! But most importantly, bring a good attitude and an open mind.

Meet Spanish Tutor Karen Nguyen
"Tutoring is a FREE and great way to get help in a class!"
1. Tell us a little
about yourself (how you are involved with the Learning Resources Center, where
are you from, what are you studying).
I'm Karen Nguyen, a junior Biology major and Spanish minor,
tutoring all levels of Spanish for the LRC. I'm from Harford County, Maryland
(but no one knows where that is).
2. Tell us about how
you are involved on campus.
I like to keep myself busy and make new friends, thus I'm
involved on campus as president of alpha Kappa Delta Phi, an officer of the
Viet Nam Medical Assistance Program, and a member of the Honors College!
3. How long have you
been a tutor?
This is my 5th semester as a Spanish tutor!
4. How and why did you
get involved in being a tutor?
I had a lot of friends come to me with questions about
Spanish, and I realized that I really enjoy being able to help others learn a
new language and pass their classes.
5. What is your
favorite thing about being a tutor?
Being a tutor can be frustrating at times, but it is also
extremely rewarding to know that you have been of help to fellow students. Last
year, one of my tutees came up to me and said that he appreciated how much I
tried to help him, and was thus able to pass Spanish to graduate -- I'm
grateful to have this teaching opportunity.
6. Why should
students utilize the tutoring?
Tutoring is a FREE and great way to get help in a class
you're struggling with, especially as you are being tutored by peers, who
understand how hard a subject can be to learn, as fellow students.
7. What advice would
you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring session?
Come to tutoring sessions prepared to ask questions, and
bring all class materials.
8. When and where can
someone work with you through the Learning Resources Center?
It's very easy to make a tutoring appointment! Just go to
the LRC website and fill out the online application to be matched with a tutor.

Meet SI/PASS Leader Carly Sciandra

1. Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Carly Sciandra and I am a junior Biology major
with a Chemistry and History minor. I hope to obtain my MD/Ph.D in the future
and spend the rest of my life helping others.
2. Tell us about how you are involved on campus.
I am:
- an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Michael Summers HIV
Structural Biology Lab
-the secretary/Risk Management Officer for Phi Delta Epsilon
International Medical Fraternity
-an athlete tutor and Organic Chemistry LA
3. How long have you been tutoring/working as an
SI/PASS Leader.
-this is my third semester
4. How and why did you get involved in SI/PASS?
I LOVED going to PASS_SI sessions when I took Biology 141.
The confidence the leader instilled in me in my knowledge made me determined to
become a leader to do the same for incoming students.
5. What is your favorite thing about being an
SI/PASS Leader?
I love watching students interact in groups to learn
material that once confused them. The expression and pride they get when they
finally grasp material is extremely rewarding.
6. Why should students attend SI/PASS sessions?
Even if you are completely confident in the class or
struggling to understand something, coming to these sessions will give a
student the ability to work with peers to see their perspective on the
material. They can gain more confidence through teaching others or work on
understanding material through group work and activities.
7. What advice would you give students about how
to prepare for an SI/PASS session?
Read the textbook and take notes on the chapter.
8. When and where can someone participate in
your SI/PASS sessions?
SI/PASS Sessions Schedules are available online on our website.
My CHEM 352 sessions are on Wednesdays 11:00 – 11:50 a.m. and Fridays 11:00 – 11:50 a.m. in SOND 208
