Handling Biochem with Hannah Ramcharan!

<Tagline>Day 1 of our 2019 Get to Know a Tutor Series</Tagline>

Good Morning Retrievers!

It is the first day of National Tutor Appreciation Week and what better way to celebrate than to get to know one of our tutors! Today's tutor is Hannah Ramcharan! Hailing all the way from Frederick, MD, Hannah has tutored Biology, Chemistry, and Computer Science for the Academic Success Center for two semesters. Let's find out some more interesting facts about Hannah!

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! My name is Hannah Ramcharan and I am originally from Frederick MD. I am currently a junior majoring in bioinformatics. For the past two semesters, I have worked at the Academic Success Center and enjoy tutoring students in bio, chem, math, and comp sci classes.

Outside of being a tutor, how else are you involved on campus?

To keep myself involved around campus, I am currently the treasurer of the Apartments Community Council where I have the opportunity to plan community building events for residents. Additionally, I am on the Student Health and Counseling Advisory Council where I meet with the members of the council to talk about how we can promote mental health and wellness around campus. I am also currently working in Dr. Lobos lab doing RNA sequencing research with bacteria and planetarium to further develop mathematical models.

Why did you decide to be a tutor?

Being able to see students grow in their academics and develop good study habits was one of the primary reasons why wanted to become involved in tutoring.

What do you love about being a tutor?

I really enjoy witnessing students get a sense of satisfaction when something finally clicks, and times when my student comes back with the news that they passed the exam with flying colors because it shows that their hard work has paid off.

How should a student prepare for a tutoring session with you?

A student who comes in well prepared usually has questions or topic in mind that they would like to go over. It is important that they know what they don't know because that where I would come in to help! Last but not least, having an open mind is key so that they are able to think about new ways to solve a problem.

How can someone meet with you through the Academic Success Center?

A student can stop by drop in tutoring, or they can make an appointment in Sherman Hall to have weekly tutoring sessions. My tutees usually ask me when I have hours for drop in tutoring in the Academic Success Center, and we try to coordinate our time accordingly.

Hannah is one of our amazing tutors and SI/PASS leaders that we are highlighting during National Tutor Appreciation Week, and we appreciate her sharing her love of tutoring with us.

Follow us on myUMBC to see who we highlight tomorrow.

Writing Center Tutor Invited to Naylor Research Workshop

<Tagline>Ajay Kharkar to Develop ESL Tutoring Research</Tagline>

Congratulations to Ajay Kharkar, Academic Success Center's Writing Center Tutor!

Ajay will attend the Naylor Workshop for Undergraduate Research in Writing Studies this weekend at York College of Pennsylvania.

During the conference, Ajay will work one-on-one with writing researchers to develop his research project.

Ajay writes:

I was brought to the study of writing when I entered a communications arts program in the 9th grade, after being in a STEM program for the three years prior. Once I began studying the humanities I realized just how important writing and communication are to all studies, especially in the STEM fields. While I have continued to study a STEM track (biochemistry), I have tried to put as much of an emphasis on writing as I could. I have taken the writing center internship course at our school and tutor in our writing center. In addition, I tutor literacy for first graders in Baltimore City, because I believe that early literacy is paramount to success in school and any subsequent career.

This kind of research specifically matters to me because, as I mentioned before, I have grown up with ESL learners and have worked with many ESL learners in the writing center. They face challenges that their peers do not have to deal with studying in another language, and they should receive help specific to these challenges. Unfortunately, tutoring ESL students is an area only briefly covered in the overall teaching of writing tutoring, and I feel that there is a great need for additional strategies specific for ESL tutoring. By investigating into a different sort of strategies, those of interpersonal relations and creating a comfortable environment as opposed to the writing-specific strategies almost ubiquitously described in ESL tutoring studies, I feel this goal can be most effectively met.

You can schedule an appointment with Ajay and other Writing Center tutors online:

Writing Center appointment and drop-in tutoring for any writing assignments for any course (1st floor, AOK Library)

You can view tutoring schedules online and book appointments using the ASC scheduling system, TutorTrac.

Click on the ASC Tutor Schedule to check for available tutors and reserve your sessions.

If you want to know more about how to use TutorTrac, download the Student procedures.
