Every student and professor wants you to succeed and is willing to take the time and effort to help you achieve your goals.

What challenges have you overcome as a first-generation student?

I overcame the challenge of the unknown. I had no idea what to expect and was incredibly overwhelmed by the college experience. After some time and with the support of my professors, peers, and advisers, I was able to overcome that fear of the unknown.

What's your Why? Why are you pursuing a college degree?

I am pursuing a college degree to be able to attain my dream of being a professor. I am incredibly passionate about both teaching and research and would love to have a career that encompasses both of those things, but I need a college degree to do so.

What advice do you have for other First-Generation Students at UMBC?

My advice to other First-Generation Students at UMBC is to take advantage of all the opportunities that UMBC has to offer because you can get a lot out of this school that will allow you to be the next one to inspire other students just like you.

Who has been especially helpful to you at UMBC?

Dr. Justin Webster has been incredibly helpful to me in guiding me down the right path to be able to achieve all of my short and long term goals. Because we both took similar paths in college, he has been an invaluable part of my college journey thus far.

If you're a first-generation student who is doing great things at UMBC or in the world, you could be the next First Gen Student of the Month. Complete the nomination here.

What is an Academic Alert?

<Tagline>If you get one, seek support!</Tagline>

Hi Retrievers!

The First Year Intervention Program, or alerts program, is one of the many services that we offer to UMBC students. Professors send alerts to let students know that they are in danger of receiving a D or F in their courses. From now through March 25th, you might receive an alert in myUMBC. If you receive an alert, here's what to do next.

1. Contact your professor. The first thing you should do is to contact your professor to figure out what your exact grade is and what you can do about it.

2. Visit the online Action Resource Center. The Action Resource Center is an online hub of resources. Please take some time to review the many services at UMBC that are here to help you be successful.

3. Make an action plan for success. Now that you understand where you stand in your course and what resources are available to you, make a plan for being successful in the semester. The plan could include many different things, like making a study schedule, attending tutoring, or going to office hours. Each student is different, so you have to find out what will work for you.

So remember, if you get an alert, take action! Talk to your professor, seek out resources, and make a plan for success.

Get to Know a Tutor: Ryan Mbagna-Nanko

<Tagline>One of our Appointment Tutors at the Academic Success Center</Tagline>

Hello Retrievers!

Tutoring is up and running for Spring 2020! You know about our services, but let's learn a bit about the people who make it happen with our Get to Know series!

Today's tutor is Ryan Mbagna-Nanko! Ryan is a Mechanical Engineering major at UMBC. In addition to working at the Math and Science Tutoring Center, Ryan also is available to tutor by appointment for PHYS 122.

Hey Ryan! Tell us what else you do on campus!

I’m a teaching fellow for Dynamics as well as a member of the NSBE. In my free time, I enjoy playing soccer so I’m also a member of the intramural soccer team.

Why did you get involved with the Academic Success Center?

I was recommended by the professor to be a resource. I felt that I was social and relatable since I struggled a little bit in the beginning of the course. Because I sought out that help from my professor, I was able to do better.

Why do you love your job?

I enjoy that high of working with people and collaboration, improving their confidence in their subject. I enjoy that interaction and seeing people progress and understand the material. Seeing that before and after is motivating!

Ideal pizza and why?

It’s gotta be spicy, for sure! It can be breakfast pizza, with eggs and cheese. It has to have hot sauce on it and it has to have extra jalapenos. You can even swap out the marinara sauce with hot sauce, and I will eat it!

Thanks, Ryan for letting us get to know you!

Find Ryan in the Math and Science Tutoring Center or book an appointment with him today!
