Pass Fail Policy FAQ
Department Pass Fail policies and other policy questions
Hi Retrievers,
The end of classes is nigh and finals are coming up! We want to take this time to remind you of all the policy options available to you for the Spring 2020 semester.
Students will have until June 10, 2020 (two weeks after grades are out) to make decisions about changing to a Pass Fail grading method or withdrawing (W) for a class. We know you have questions, so we summarized everything you need to know in this handy FAQ.
A few quick notes:
- Changing your grading option to a P/F or withdrawing from a class will be done through the Registrar's office. You will NOT need to submit a petition through the Academic Success Center.
- Changing your grading option to a P/F or withdrawing from a class (W) is considered final. Once you make the choice, you cannot change your mind. Before doing anything, we encourage you to talk to your advisor and a financial aid counselor to see how a change might impact you.
- A P cannot be used for ENGL 100.
This FAQ contains all of the pass/fail policies for each department at UMBC, including all departments under CAHSS, COEIT, and CNMS as well as the policies for the Erickson School of Aging Studies, the School of Social Work, Individualized Study, and Honors College.
If you are starting to think about either of these policies, please be sure to read the FAQ and consult with your advisor before making any decisions. There is still plenty of time to consider all of your options before June 10th.

Tutoring will end for the semester on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. If you need to book a session or make a Writing Center appointment--now is the time to do it!

We're almost through the week and what better way to celebrate than with a Get to Know a Tutor post! This week, we're highlighting another one of our Math and Science tutors, Gabby Khan!

Tell us about yourself!
I’m a sophomore, computer science major with a game
development pathway. I work in the MASTC and I tutor CMSC 201-203, MATH
151-152, and PHYS 121
Tell us what else you do on campus.
I work for the honors college council and I’m the public
relations chair. I advertise events for the honors college.
Why did you get involved with the Academic Success Center?
I would go there a lot for tutoring when I first started
here and I realized it’s really helpful. Since I hung out there all the time,
someone assumed I was a tutor. I helped them out and then I realized “hey! I
can do this!”
Why do you love your job?
I love when students come back to me and tell me that they
now understand something and they’ve succeeded in their class. I had a student
message me and thank me for helping them in Physics! I like the feeling that
I’m actually helping people achieve what they want.
Ideal pizza and why?
I have two. I love Magherita because it has those rich
flavors and textures! I also like everything veggie pizza! I don’t hate meat,
but I feel like it’s got that crunch factor and that taste on everything.
