Join the First-Generation Peer Mentoring Program!
Greetings!
Welcome to UMBC! We are incredibly excited to welcome you to Retriever Nation and look forward to connecting with you in the very near future. The First-Generation Peer Mentoring Program (FGPMP) is accepting applicants for the Fall 2021 semester. As a first-gen mentee or mentor, you will be paired with a student that identifies as a first-generation student and have an opportunity to participate in a variety of events and programming designed specifically around your experience. This program is a great opportunity to make connections with other first-generation students and to become more familiar with different UMBC resources.
If you’re interested in taking part in the First-Generation Peer Mentoring Program, please fill out this form. We will pair mentees and mentors according to mutual interests, area of study, and the number of students that sign up for the program. Please be aware that our ability to match students will depend on the aforementioned factors.
Applications are due by Friday, August 27, 2021 at 5:00 PM. Mentors and mentees will be paired and notified shortly thereafter. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Antonio Silas at silas@umbc.edu.

** UPDATE ** Preliminary Fall 2021 Bus Schedules
UMBC Transit Weekdays/Weekends Bus Schedules
UPDATE PROVIDED BY UMBC TRANSIT
UMBC Transit will resume full schedule service 08/23/2021. Bus routes and times will be posted in the coming weeks. Please see the following link for some wonderful alternative transportation options. For further assistance, inquiries, or concerns please email Transit Operations at transit@umbc.edu
Routes
UMBC Transit will be providing its customary routes 7 days a week for the Fall 2021 semester. Operational hours are as follows: Monday – Friday 6:30am – 11:30pm, Saturday – Sunday 8:00am – 11:30pm.
Route Frequency
Frequency varies per route – Please see the Transit website for specific hours and route schedules. The bus locator system (Transit Tracker) is available for determining the real-time location of specific buses on route. The app is also used to send updates and messages to the ridership.
Health and Safety
UMBC’s COVID19 safety protocols are in effect aboard buses and at bus stops. At this time, facial masking will still be required aboard buses and at stops.
Your ID is Your Ticket to Ride
Your campus ID is required to be presented and swiped upon boarding. You will be swiping your card to validate enrollment and to create a ridership report per route. No visitors are permitted on Transit buses at this time.

A Series Honoring First-Generation College Graduates
Congratulations to all our First-Generation College Student Graduates!
In honor of May graduation, we'd like to introduce a few of our first-gen grads, in their own words:
Kyle Lowery - B.S. in Mechanical Engineering
Graduating as a First Generation College Student with an engineering degree means the world to me. It opens up prospects of financial security and career mobility I could only have dreamed of. My entire journey has shown me just how powerful an education can be. I would like to thank Dr. Steve Storck, an alumni of UMBC. Interactions were few and far between; through SAE Baja and on tour of JHU's Applied Physics Laboratory. However, each interaction was either inspiring or thought-provoking. Tidbits of guidance that continue to stick with me — especially now, as I set out for fulfilling work in the sciences.
Post-Grad Plans: I will continue search for employment in industry.
Grace Jones - B.A. in Biological Sciences and Gender Women's Studies, Minor in Psychology
Graduating as a first-gen means rewriting the history of my family into one of higher education and limitless career opportunities. To be graduating from UMBC as a First-Gen student is an honor and a privilege, and I am forever grateful. My loving and supportive parents. They made sure I never forgot the importance of perseverance and taught me to never give up on my dreams no matter how hard they may be to achieve.

A Series Honoring First-Generation College Graduates
Congratulations to all our First-Generation College Student Graduates!
In honor of May graduation, we'd like to introduce a few of our first-gen grads, in their own words:
Ketsia René - B.A. in Psychology
What it means to be a first-generation college graduate means being able to have the future my parents desperately worked for me to have. My parents supported me through my many major changes they just want me to have a career that I would enjoy...and survive financially lol.
Post-Grad Plans: Grad school for sure all the way to doctorate. Might even mess around and get another bachelor. But a gap year for now, Lord knows I need it!
Jasmine Bonilla - Mechanical Engineering
Being a first gen college student means that I was able to carry out the dreams of both my immigrant parents when they came to this country against all odds. I am extremely blessed. My mother supported me in completing my degree. She brought me home cooked meals to campus when I had limited time to cook for myself, and always gave me the push that I needed when I felt like I wanted to give up. I love her so much.
Post-Grad Plans: I plan to work as a Pathways Engineer at Northrop Grumman.
Vivi Tran - B.S. in Biological Sciences, Minor in Management of Aging Services
Itzel Pineda - B.A. in Psychology
Being a first-generation college graduate means that all the sacrifices that my parents made to leave everything behind was all worth it in the end. They left everything behind to ensure that I received a great education.
Post-Grad Plans: Grad school/nursing school.
Natalie Matthews - B.A. in Theatre, Minor in Psychology
The entire theatre department has supported me throughout my completion of my degree. Adam Mendelson specifically, who has been helping me and being a mentor for me since I was a senior in High School. I've taken classes with him, worked on projects with him, and spent hours of meetings with him. He's helped me refine my design process and taught me something new every single time I've seen him.
Post-Grad Plans: In the Fall of 2022 I plan to continue my studies in theatre by going to graduate school for an M.F.A in Lighting Design.
Jenifer Gomez - B.S. in Psychology and Philosophy
It's an exciting and thrilling feeling to know that I am one of my first generations to graduate. I am honored to be graduating at UMBC and I hope to give inspiration to many more to come. I want to give thanks to my sister who has always supported me throughout the many years in school and to my mother who has expressed how proud she is of me. To all my Philosophy profs who have not only taught me everything I know but have inspired me to continue my career. I also want to thank my two best friends Monica and Aileen for always supporting me through my school career too.
Post-Grad Plans: I plan to pursue Philosophy as a master's degree and practice medicine.

Jacob Eya - B.A. in Sociology
It's a great pleasure to be part of UMBC college student to complete my degree. Atouba Pauline, my mother, Chelsea Moyer SW program coordinator and Latoya, Brown have supported me in completing my degree.
Post-Grad Plans: School of Social Work or job position.
Maria Isabel Ruiz - Psychology and Social Work
I feel blessed to be able to earn my bachelor degree and have the possibility to pursue higher education because I deeply believe that wha it is learned, no one can take away from you.
Post-Grad Plans: accepted at UMD for School Counseling Master program.
Miglanche Ghomsi Nono - B.A. in Biological Sciences, Minor in EHS
It means I have finally gotten on track. I’ve always found it hard to concentrate and set my mind to accomplish my goals but I knew once I was able to do that, everything else will come on its own. Through UMBC, I was able to kick it off and I’m planning on pushing till the end. Mrs. Samuel supported me in completing my degree.
Post-Grad Plans: Planning on doing an MD/PhD. However will be at NIH for the next 2 years.
Kashif Ali - Information Systems

Nikkie Steven - Media Communications
It means a lot graduating as a first generation college student. Making my parents proud feels so good. I don't even think it hit me yet. Professor Synder has always been willing to help and open to my questions. I'm very grateful for him.
Post-Grad Plans: I'm not sure exactly what I want to do, I know for sure I want to take a year to myself to really learn and get a much needed me break.
Dekermu S. Nushann - Financial Economics
It's an honor to be graduating from a prestigious college like UMBC. It's a dream come through to start a journey a few years back and complete it before your eyes and loved ones who believed in you along the way. My mom (Catherine Y. Nushann), dad (Josiah Y. Nushann), my wife (Jangar B. Nushann), uncles, and aunties have been my biggest cheerleaders who always supported me and kept me on track. They were always there no matter what the circumstance was.
Post-Grad Plans: I plan on getting a full-time job after graduation.
