The Institutional Review Board (IRB) — the university committee that reviews, approves, and monitors research involving human participants — is currently accepting volunteer applications from faculty, staff, and students to join the committee.
The IRB regularly rotates its membership to ensure representation across departments and areas of expertise. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the integrity of UMBC’s research enterprise while gaining valuable experience in research ethics and compliance.
What IRB Members Do:
- Review research proposals and consent documents
- Evaluate ethical, scientific, and regulatory aspects of studies
- Assess risk levels and ensure compliance with federal regulations
- Recommend improvements to protocols and IRB procedures
- Attend and participate in IRB meetings and deliberations
Time Commitment:
- Faculty/Staff: 3-year renewable term
- Students: 1-year renewable term
- The IRB meets five times per academic year (October, December, February, April, and June)
- Meetings are held on Mondays from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
