Welcome to EWB Fall 2020! How to join EWB and get involved this semester virtually

Hi everyone and welcome to a new school year!


Whether you are a new student or a returning member, we are excited to work with you! Online classes and clubs can be difficult but we are doing our best to make sure our organization is ready to go. Any student can join regardless of major or experience- our project is interdisciplinary and you’ll learn by doing (with help & guidance of course).


To start, we have some important information and updates:


  • We are moving our communication platform to Discord. Previously we have used Google Hangouts for our weekly meetings and Groupme for our updates- now both will be on Discord for ease of use. From our poll last semester, Discord was a preferred platform and it has many useful functions that will be an improvement. The Discord also has channels for casual conversation so that students can meet and talk to each other easily, since we are not able to in person.The link to join is here: https://discord.gg/cg4sKGC
  • Please fill out this When2meet with your weekly availability if you plan to come to our General Body Meetings (GBMs) or work sessions! We want to pick a time that works for as many people as possible. Link: https://www.when2meet.com/?9593796-IxZdL
  • Involvement fest is coming up and will be on Webex Teams. Our Involvement fest virtual booth will be on September 10th between the hours of 12pm to 2 pm. Come say hello or ask any questions you may have! The link to join is here: https://eurl.io/#iDvBXsrJ9G
  • For our water supply system project, we will be focusing on the design phase this semester. We are finalizing which chlorinator & metering system to implement and will be working on the technical design report. We also are establishing an partnership with a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Costa Rica, so if you are interested in international communication and/or speak Spanish we will be doing work in this area as well.

We plan to start our detailed design phase (implementation report) tomorrow at our regularly scheduled work session (every Thursday at 6pm at this link: https://hangouts.google.com/group/9Ma84HXi9esmguey5). Also, our next project meeting is scheduled to be Tuesday July 7th at 6pm and we will be discussing our progress with the chapter and our professional mentors (link here: https://hangouts.google.com/group/TW1XmmBXyc7UjhJw5. Everyone is invited, feel free to just listen in if you prefer!

The more people the better, so if you have extra time on your hands and are looking for something productive to work on this summer, you can jump in/join at any time! Internships and such are hard to come by right now, but our EWB project is still ongoing and is a great opportunity to develop your technical and professional skills. Hello everyone!

Our work sessions for the summer will be on Thursdays 6-7:30pm, starting this week. They will be over Google Hangouts, and you can join at this link: https://hangouts.google.com/group/9Ma84HXi9esmguey5
We have a lot of important work to do with design and analysis for our upcoming reports. We will post notes after the work sessions as well for anyone who cannot make it but who would like to work at a different time, and so that everyone can be kept up to date.

We will also be having project meetings once a month. The first meeting will be next Tuesday, June 9th at 6pm. It is a great way to be a part of project decision and discussion, and to meet our professional mentors! Hi all! 

Hope you are staying safe and enjoyed the break from classes so far! Our project still has due dates coming up and so we will be continuing to work over the summer. 

We plan to hold work sessions once a week over Google Hangouts. We will be mainly working on our alternatives analysis (comparing options and selecting one) and implementation reports (thorough design plans) for a chlorination and water metering system, which are detail and technical heavy so if you can help out please do! You can be as involved as you want and if you are a new student (of any major) who wants to get a head start before the fall semester, you are welcome to join now! We also plan to have larger project meetings with our mentor team once a month so keep an eye out for those dates!

Reminder that we are hosting a Netflix Party movie night tonight at 7:30pm to watch The Matrix together! To join, you have to have access to a Netflix account and download the Netflix Party Browser Extension.

A link to join the party will be sent out through myUMBC and GroupMe at about 7:20pm so that everyone has time to log on. When you click the link, you will need to also click the "NP" icon at the top of your browser to join the party. When you join you should see the group chat box pop up.

In response to some feedback, we have decided on a more organized method for accomplishing tasks for the remainder of this semester. We will be holding 2 work sessions each week via Google Hangouts. Members can come to one, or both, or work independently and check in through email or GroupMe. 

We now have a task sheet breaking up some of our bigger tasks into bite size chunks. Find the task sheet at this link. If you see a task that interests you or that you want to work on, you can jump right in. If you are working on a task, please record any work in this work session folder and try to title the document so that we know what task you are working on. If you are working on a task directly in a document (Alternatives Analysis or Implementation Plan) try to keep in touch with us and/or put your name next to the task in the task sheet to designate that you worked on it. 

The goal of the online work sessions is to provide a designated time for everyone to work on EWB related tasks and be able to answer questions and get updates from everyone. You can absolutely work independently outside of these times! The current times we have scheduled are:

Friday April 17th 7-9pm (Only this Friday will be held in the evening)
Mondays 11am-1pm
Fridays 11am-1pm
